Written Response Submission 2017-2018 Template

Submission Requirements
2. Written Responses
Submit one PDF file in which you respond directly to each of the prompts below.
Clearly label your responses 2a–2e in order. Your responses must provide evidence
of the extensive knowledge you have developed about your chosen computing
innovation and its impact(s). Write your responses so they would be understandable
to someone who is not familiar with the computing innovation. Include citations, as
applicable, within your written responses. Your response to prompts 2a–2d combined
must not exceed 700 words. The references required in 2e are not included in the
final word count.
Computational Artifact
2a. Provide information on your computing innovation and computational artifact.
● Name the computing innovation that is represented by your computational artifact.
● Describe the computing innovation’s intended purpose and function.
● Describe how your computational artifact illustrates, represents, or explains the computing
innovation’s intended purpose, its function, or its effect.
(Must not exceed 100 words)
Insert response for 2a in the text box below.

My computational artifact represents CT scans. The purpose of a CT scan is to image a

wide range of internal organs and body structures. It was created with the intention of
creating a system to detect injuries or problems in the body with more accuracy than
standard x-rays. [1] The computational artifact I created shows how CT scans can detect
problems, such as lung cancer and diseased kidneys. It also displays what the CT scanner
looks like and how a person interacts with it.

2b. Describe your development process, explicitly identifying the computing tools and
techniques you used to create your artifact. Your description must be detailed enough so that a
person unfamiliar with those tools and techniques will understand your process.

(Must not exceed 100 words)

Insert response for 2b in the text box below.

To create my computational artifact, I used Microsoft Powerpoint 2016. First, I created a

blue text box with a black border and typed in the title "CT-Scans". Next, I found
multiple images that represented CT scans and its function. I then placed them on the
slide in a way that is aesthetically pleasing. In addition, I also added borders to the
pictures to provide emphasis to them, all while sticking to the color scheme of blue and
black. Finally, I created another text box, same as the one with the title, and typed in
information about CT scans.

Computing Innovation
2c. Explain at least one beneficial effect and at least one harmful effect the computing
innovation has had, or has the potential to have, on society, economy, or culture.

(Must not exceed 250 words)

Insert response for 2c in the text box below.

CT scans were created with the intention of having many positive effects. One beneficial
effect is that they provide many medical advantages that other scans do not provide.
They administer a rapid acquisition of images, a wealth of clear and specific information,
and a view of a large portion of the body. CT scans scan extremely quickly, so the results
can be seen immediately, which can allow for emergency surgeries and ultimately save
lives. [2] Although CT scans were created with the intention of just having positive
effects, there are also negative effects. The biggest con that comes with CT scans is the
radiation. They deliver radiation with much higher doses than regular x-rays, so it can
make people extremely sick. It also increases the possibility of developing cancer with
each CT scan you get. [3] This negative effect greatly affects society. With an
increasingly amount of people getting CT scans each year, the percent of cancer in the
population is also increasing. Society continues to get CT scans, and therefore increase
their chance of getting cancer. With cancer being the second leading cause of death in
the United States, the fact that it is increasing even more will affect society
detrimentally. People will continue to get diagnosed and this will tear apart families and
therefore start a chain of reactions that will negatively impact the society that we live in.

2d. Using specific details, describe:
● the data your innovation uses;
● how the innovation consumes (as input), produces (as output), and/or transforms data; and
● at least one data storage concern, data privacy concern, or data security concern directly
related to the computing innovation.

(Must not exceed 250 words)

Insert response for 2d in the text box below.

CT scans uses data signals from x-rays to provide the scans. A set of digital x-ray
detectors use these signals as they leave the patient and transmit them to a computer.
Each time the x-ray completes one cycle, the CT computer produces a 2D slice of the
patient, using the data signals and mathematical techniques. When a slice is completed,
the image is stored in the computer and can be displayed either individually, or stacked
together to create a 3D image. The 3D image can then be rotated or be viewed as slides
in succession, allowing the problem to be located easier. [4] The data that is used for CT
scans also raise data security and privacy concerns. Medical information, such as the
data collected from CT scans, can be incredibly valuable to criminals. The information
gathered can be easily accessed by people other than the doctors. Due to this, your data
records can be altered or sold to third party companies. These companies can then
display your information to the public or use it as advertising, all without your
knowledge or consent. [5]

References
2e. Provide a list of at least three online or print sources used to create your computational
artifact and/or support your responses through in-text citation to the prompts provided in
this performance task.
● At least two of the sources must have been created after the end of the previous academic
year.
● For each online source, include the complete and permanent URL. Identify the author, title,
source, the date you retrieved the source, and, if possible, the date the reference was
written or posted.
● For each print source, include the author, title of excerpt/article and magazine or book, page
number(s), publisher, and date of publication.
● If you include an interview source, include the name of the person you interviewed, the date
on which the interview occurred, and the person’s position in the field.
● Include in-text citations for the sources you used.
● Each source must be relevant, credible, and easily accessed.
