This clinical rotation has taught me what kind of nurse I strive to be, and what kind of nurse I don’t want to be. I
observed great nursing, and I observed not-so-great nursing. It is a learning experience to see care you
believe could be done better. It helped me understand what it takes to be a great nurse and what steps I need
to take to be the best nurse to all of my patients. I worked with many patients of all different adult ages, all
sorts of different diagnoses, and all different backgrounds. I learned many skills from great nurses and learned
a great amount from every patient I had the honor to work with.
Which objective did you accomplish during this rotation? How did you do it?
I practiced skills including tracheostomy care, J/G tube care, how to handle emotional situations, peritoneal
dialysis administration and care, practiced culturally sensitive care, and was able to recognize abnormal
assessments in my patients and take appropriate actions. I developed new skills, expanded my critical thinking
skills, and grew stronger assessment skills. I cared for patients with many different diagnoses and was able to
grow my knowledge in each clinical day.
What are your goals for future work in the clinical setting?
I plan to continue to use my critical thinking skills and thorough assessment skills to take care of each of my
patients to the best of my ability. I strive to continue to develop new skills at every clinical, push myself to think
outside of the box, and care for all my patients holistically. I will take everything I have learned in lecture and in
my clinical experience and bring it into my nursing practice daily. I will continue show compassion and
dedication while caring for my patients. I will continue to respect my patients’ dignity and abide by HIPPA
protocols. My goal is to never stop learning and never forget why I began this career.

I truly believe that you don’t really know what kind of nurse you want to be, until you know what kind of nurse
you don’t want to be. You are spot on saying that you experienced nursing care that was below your
expectations and this will be something you think about forever. What excellent experience you were able to
get this clinical rotation. You were able to really demonstrate your critical thinking skills, fine-tune your patient
assessment and ask questions that showed me that you were thinking on a deeper level. I see how well you
communicate with your patients and their families and you just make them feel cared for in every way. It is
such a valuable trait to make people comfortable just by talking to them. I am confident that you are going to
be an excellent nurse and you will always understand the value in a lifelong learner.
