CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
In this chapter, the writer discussed about the introduction of study which consisted of

background of the study, problem of the study, objective of the study, significance of the study,

limitation of the study, variables of the study, definition of concept, frame of discussion,

assumption of the study and hypotheses of the study.

1.1 The Background of the Study

Most of the people in the world used the oral communication to communicate. The

common four elements of language skills were listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Writing is the process to tell something that is not real or it could be our imagination and

showcased in writing, writing also express their ideas, opinion and organized them in simple

sentence or in short paragraph. Harmer (Writing skill is often needed to measure knowledge in

most exams, wheter they are testing in foreign language abilities or other skill.

1.2 The Problem of the Study

Based on the bacground of the study , the writer formulated the problem of the study as

follow:

1. Is there any correlation between writing ability and memory span of the first grade students

at SMP SANTO THOMAS 3 MEDAN?

1.3 The Objective of the study

In relation to the problem of the study, the objective of the study is:

1. To measure the correlation between writing ability and memory span of the first grade

students at SMP SANTO THOMAS 3 MEDAN? .

1.4 The Significance of the Study

There are two kinds of significance in a scientific study. They are the theoretical and

practical significance. The two significance are elaborated as follow:


1.4.1 The Theorical Significance

The findings of this study are theoritically expected to be sifnificant to give contribution

to support the writing ability and memory span of the first grade students at SMP SANTO

THOMAS 3 MEDAN.

1.4.2 The Practical Significance

The findings of this study is practically significant to help the students to solve their

problem in speaking and to give empirical data about the correlation between vocabulary

mastery and speaking ability of the eleventh grade students at MAN Model Palangka Raya.

1.5 Limitation of the Study

The study belonged to the correlation research. The study focused on students’ writing

ability and memory span. The population of the study was the first grade students of language

class of SMP SANTO TOMAS 3 MEDAN. The number of the population was 27 students. To

take the sample, the writer applied the total population sampling technique. The number of the

sample was 27 students
