Optimised light-spot geometry for gap detection

- The size of the light spot corresponds to the size of the
detectable gaps. The smallest-possible gap can be
detected in the focal point of a focussed light beam.
Detection of foil thicknesses < 20µm
- Paper-thin transparent foils polarise the light beam and
can considerably distort the measurement result for
sensors with a polarising filter. Sensors without a polar-
ising filter of type RKR are ideally suited for detecting
these foils.
Temperature-compensated sensor electronics
- For the reliable detection of highly transparent
containers or foils, a sensor setting with low
performance reserve is necessary. Without corre- Certified acc. to

with polarisation filter
Highly reflective objects, such as mirror-
like metal parts could cause switching
errors if using standard sensors. If
retro-reflective sensors work with polar-
ised light, those problems are avoided.
The polarised light of the transmitter
meets the reflector, which "rotates" the
plane of polarisation by 90°. The
receiver recognises only this light from
the reflector. The receiver is not tricked
by "false" light reflected directly by the
object because its plane of polarisation
was not changed. NPN transistor outputs

required, such that no manual operation is
possible (e.g., protection from erroneous
operation or manipulation).
If the teach input is not connected or if there
is a static low signal, the button is unlocked
and can be operated freely.

General information

z The sensor is factory-adjusted for the detection of coloured glass.

Recommendation: teach only if the desired objects are not reliably detected.
z The light spot may not exceed the reflector.
z Preferably use MTKS 50x50 reflectors.
z For reflecting objects, the sensor has to be mounted approx. 5° angular towards the object.

Clear the light path to the reflector!
The device setting is stored in a fail-safe way.
A reconfiguration following voltage interruption

Locking the teach button via the teach input

A static high signal (≥ 4ms) at the teach

input locks the teach button on the device if
required, such that no manual operation is
possible (e.g., protection from erroneous
operation or manipulation).
If the teach input is not connected or if there
is a static low signal, the button is unlocked
and can be operated freely.

1. Operating principle of contamination compensation (tracking function)

This transparency sensor (clear-glass sensor) is a device which automatically compensates system contamination at the reflector
and sensor by means of continuous measurement of the receiving level. The control rate depends on the number of gaps in the
process. This tracking function increases the interval between cleaning sessions considerably.
The sensor does not need to be recalibrated after the system has been cleaned. In typical applications, cleaning can be performed
during system operation. This means higher system efficiency.
The system is calibrated ("teach-in") once only at initial setup. The appropriate object is then selected (PE, clear glass or coloured
glass). The "teach-in" process does not have to be performed again if a different object is selected.

RKR 18 Ex n Retro-reflective photoelectric sensors with polarisation filter

Operating instructions for sensors of type RKR 18/4 DL 8.45 Ex n for application in
potentially explosive areas of zone 2 and 22.
The sensors produced by Leuze electronic GmbH + Co. KG for use in potentially explosive areas are sensors which function on
the optical electronic principle. Without making physical contact, these sensors detect objects which are located in or which pass
through the light beam.

Attention!
Electrical equipment may endanger humans and (where applicable) animal health, and may threaten the safety of goods
if used incorrectly and under unfavourable conditions in potentially explosive areas.
A safe operation in potentially explosive areas is only possible if the equipment is used properly and for its intended
purpose.
This requires that the installation and operating instructions are adhered to and that appropriate measures are taken to
ensure that this is effectively and permanently ensured.

Notes!
- In order to achieve a safe operation of sensors of Group II, Category 3 in potentially explosive areas, installation and
protective devices appropriate to the application must ensure that operational events do not damage or overload the
equipment.

Installation, Commissioning
In order to comply with the requirements acc. to EN 50 021 and EN 50 281-1-1, the following prerequisites must be met:
- The equipment must be protected against mechanical damage (resistance to shock) by means of an additional protec-
tion device.
- The connectors at the equipment must be equipped with an additional safeguard or mechanical lock to avoid unintend-
ed separation of the connectors.
- The warning sign "Do not disconnect under voltage" that is supplied with the sensors must be attached to the sensor
or its mounting bracket so that it is clearly visible.
- The connection cable and the connectors must be protected from excessive or unintended pulling or pushing strain.

Attention!
- Due to the physical circumstances, the photoelectric sensors of type RKR 18/4 DL 8.45 Ex n must not be used for the
protection of persons or for purposes of emergency shutdown.
- The RKR 18/4 DL 8.45 Ex n sensors must only be installed and maintained by trained electricians.
- The applicable regulations for the installation of electrical equipment in potentially explosive areas must be observed.

Maintenance
No changes may be made to the devices of type RKR 18/4 DL 8.45 Ex n for potentially explosive areas.
Repairs to the sensors may only be performed by persons trained for such work or by the manufacturer. Defective devices must
be replaced immediately.
Cyclical maintenance of the sensors is not necessary.
Depending on the environmental conditions, it may occasionally be necessary to clean the light-emission surfaces of the RKR 18/
4 sensors. This cleaning must only be performed by persons trained for performing this task.

Chemical Resistance
The sensors of type RKR 18/4 DL 8.45 Ex n demonstrate good resistance against many diluted acids and bases.
Exposure to organic solvents is possible only under certain circumstances and only for short periods of time.
Resistance to chemicals should be examined on a case by case basis.

The control limit is indicated by a warning output. The sensor does not need to be recalibrated after the system has been cleaned.
In typical applications, cleaning can be performed during system operation. This means higher system efficiency.
The system is calibrated ("teach-in") once only at initial setup. The appropriate object is then selected (PE, clear glass or coloured
glass). The "teach-in" process does not have to be performed again if a different object is selected.

3. Sensor operation
The sensor can be operated both via the AS-interface as well as via the step switch. The step switch can, to a certain extent, be
switched off via the AS-interface. In all cases, the teach-in function of the step switch is retained.
Release of the step switch is indicated by the LED 3 = off behind the AS-i symbol (DO0=0 and DO1=0). In this mode, the AS-
interface only affects parameters P0 and P1 as these functions directly affect the switching output DI0. The functions DO2 and P2
are inactive (blocked) in this case. When switching from AS-interface to the step switch, the current step-switch setting is activated,
i.e. the device switches to the corresponding mode (1,2,3 or teach-in). The tracking function remains in the last setting set by the
AS-interface. The switching of the performance reserve is effective only after a started teach process (via AS-interface and/or step
switch) has been concluded. If the device is switched during a teach process from the step-switch mode to the AS-i mode, this
teach process restarts after 2 seconds.
