Per Remolador (2011), reducing and re-using are the first two steps to decreasing a hotel’s overall
waste. Material reduction and reuse efforts focus on actions that staff can take to reduce their
department or individual waste generation while at work.
Jones (2008), as cited in Cruz (2010), wrote that hotels are tremendous generators of solid waste and
that landfill space is depleted in many areas, and that, thus, other options must be resorted to.
Baker (2015) reports that, in most hotels, waste is created at upwards of 1 kg per guest per night
- a large amount when multiplied by the number of hotels and guests around the world.

Per the Asian Productivity Organization (as cited in Maluleke, P., 2014), solid-waste management may be
defined as “the discipline associated with controlling the generation, storage, collection, transfer and
transport, processing, and disposal of solid waste in a manner that is in accordance with the best
principles of health, economics, engineering, conservation, aesthetics, and other environmental
considerations, and that is also responsive to public attitudes.
Arafat, H. & Pirani, S. (2014). Solid waste management in the hospitality industry: A review Journal of
Environmental Management .
Against the immediately preceding backdrop, Arafat and Pirani (2014) aver that solid waste
management is a key aspect of the environmental management of establishments belonging to the
hospitality sector. In this study, literature in this area examined the current status of waste management
for the hospitality sector, in general, with a focus on food waste management in particular.
Singh, N, Cranage, D., & Lee, S. (2014) Green strategies for hotels: Estimation of
recycling benefits. International Journal of Hospitality Management, Vol. 43, October 2014.
Singh, Cranage, and Lee (2014) opine that today is the Green Economy era and green strategies, like
recycling can provide a great benefit to hotel industry. However, there is a lack of research to support
these financial benefits
Mensah, I. (2013). How green are hotels in Accra? Environmental management practices and initiatives
in tourist accommodation. http://www.researchgate.net
Mensah (2013) maintains that there have been growing concerns about the impacts of hotels on the
environment globally and in Accra where there is uncontrolled development of hotel facilities.
Indeed, pursuing profit and addressing environmental policies challenge the hotel industry. Thus, the
WBI SWM Learning Program in India (2010) suggests that, as part of Human Resources Development,
refresher courses for Supervisory Staff should be had. Such courses should be conducted for officers
and supervisory staff at least every five years. It also submitted that promotional opportunities be given
wherein adequate promotional opportunities should be available in the decentralized SWM hierarchy to
maintain the interest of the supervisory staff to remain in the department. Truly, this policy would
ensure competency of personnel toward sustaining Solid Waste Management.
Corollarily, Mellisen and Roevens (2010) wrote in their paper that lessons that can be learned from
other industries; in doing so, analysis was had on the current state of affairs in the hotel industry. By
combining these elements, the authors concluded that businesses in the hotel industry can contribute to
a sustainable future by applying environmentally conscious practices, while ensuring corporate
profitability
Shamshiry et al. (2012) noted that population growth, changing consumption patterns, and rapid
urbanization contribute significantly to the growing volumes of solid waste that are generated in urban
settings.
