PART 1 - GENERAL
1.01 DESCRIPTION:
A. Provide complete and operational systems for both normal and standby electric power
systems, normal and emergency lighting systems, grounding systems and other specified
systems, including the installation and wiring of miscellaneous equipment and devices.
Perform all work and testing as indicated and specified.
2. Provide temporary circuits, overcurrent devices, conduit and wiring, and other
equipment required during construction and change-over from existing to
proposed electric system. Perform work at the convenience of the Owner.
(NTS: Add the following when an electrical system study is required to be submitted.)
3. Provide electrical system studies including a short circuit and protective device
coordination study and an arc-flash study for the electrical distribution system
constructed under this contract.
4. Install all raceways and equipment to meet the seismic design criteria of Section
01900. Raceways supports and equipment anchoring shall be provided as
specified in the Division 16 sections which form a part of the Contract Documents.
5. Electrically powered equipment and devices provided under other divisions and
sections of the specifications are connected to the project specified electrical
systems as part of the Electrical Work. Refer to Paragraph 1.02 - Related Work.
B. All material and electrical work shall be in conformance with latest rules and requirements
of the National Fire Protection Association Standard No. 70 (National Electrical Code -
NEC), the National Electrical Manufacturer’s Association (NEMA), Underwriters
Laboratories Inc. (UL) (or the equivalent International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC), British Standards (BS) and/or in accordance with requirements of the applicable
Local Codes and standards).
C. Equivalent British/European codes and standards may be used; however, the equivalency
shall be demonstrated and submitted by the Contractor and approved by the CM/CS.
F. Conduit, wire and field connections for all motors, motor controllers, control devices,
control panels and electrical equipment furnished under Divisions 11, 13 and 15.
G. Conduit, wiring and terminations for all field-mounted instruments furnished and mounted
under other Divisions, including process instrumentation primary elements, transmitters,
local indicators and control panels. Lightning and surge protection equipment wiring at
process instrumentation transmitters. Install vendor furnished cables specified under other
Divisions.
I. Certain pieces of laboratory equipment (e.g., still, water-baths, fume hoods, etc.) will be
furnished unassembled. Do all work necessary to make this equipment operational.
J. Mount and wire power factor correction capacitors furnished under other Divisions of
these Specifications. Where capacitors are furnished with quick-release latch covers,
furnish and install a bolt and nut on each latch. Capacitors shall be installed on channel
K. Furnish and install all conduit and wiring between motor operated doors and windows and
there control stations.
M. Provide electrical relocation work associated with the relocation of equipment for the
existing and new facilities, including disconnecting all existing wiring and conduits and
providing new wiring and conduit to the relocated equipment. Make equipment scheduled
for relocation free of electrical shock hazard.
N. Review the electrical underground system and the civil yard piping. Install the electrical
underground system in a manner that avoids conflicts with manholes, catch basins, etc.
provided under other Divisions of the specifications.
2. Arrange for chases, slots and openings in the building structures during the
progress of construction to allow for the electrical installation.
1. Concealed and buried conduit layouts, shown on floor plans drawn at not less than
1 to 50 mm (¼-in = 1-ft-0-in) scale. The layout shall include locations of process
equipment, motor control centers, transformers, panelboards, control panels and
equipment, motor, switches, motor starters, large junction or pull boxes,
instruments and any other electrical devices connected to concealed or buried
2. Plans shall be drawn on high quality reproducible, double sided mylar, size 36-in.
by 24-in. and shall be presented in a neat, professional manner.
3. Concrete floors and/or walls containing concealed conduits shall not be poured
until conduit layouts are approved.
1.03 SUBMITTALS:
1. Shop Drawings and Data: Include manufacturer's drawings, bills of material, panel
and equipment layouts, catalog data, schematics diagrams, interconnection
diagrams, wiring diagrams and other documentary or descriptive information as
required for each assembly submitted in one package insofar as possible.
d. Shop drawings and data are required for the following list:
(NTS: At this point list all electrical equipment for which shop drawings are considered
necessary, i.e., switchgear, substations, transformers, motor control centers, panelboards,
control panels, heaters, intercommunication system, lighting fixtures, etc.)
(1) Starting Equipment Data List -Submit blank list initially to verify
acceptable format. Submit final list at completion of the project.
(NTS: Specify harmonic analysis here only if the design is for a large electrical system and
section 16359 is included. Otherwise, the harmonic analysis is provided by the General
Contractor per Section 01172 or 01173.)

e. Mark shop drawings and data submitted showing only items applicable to
specific contract.

(NTS: At this point list all items of equipment for which instructions are considered
necessary, i.e., switchgear, transformers, motor control centers, control panels, etc.)

A. Verify in field, all data and final locations of work installed under other sections of
specifications, required for placing of electrical work.
B. In case of interference with other work or erroneous locations with respect to equipment
or structures, furnish all labor and materials to complete the work.
(NTS: Identify where project seismic criteria is identified - either on structural drawings or
in applicable codes.)
1.05 SEISMIC DESIGN REQUIREMENTS:
(NTS: Carefully edit the following to suit project requirements. If there are structural
drawings included in the project, then the seismic requirements must be indicated on the
structural drawings. If there are no structural drawings, then Section 01900 must be
further edited by the structural engineer for the project to indicate the seismic
requirements for this project.)
B. Conform to the seismic design requirements for this project and for the work of Division
16.
A. Insure that devices and materials are listed and/or labeled by Underwriters' Laboratories,
Inc., (or equivalent IEC– European Committee of Electrotechnical Standards or BS –
British Standards) wherever standards have been established by that agency. Where
Underwriters' Laboratories (or any of the named equivalent agencies) listing is not
available for equipment, submit certified test reports of Internationally Recognized Testing
Laboratory, approved by the local inspecting authority, indicating that equipment is in
conformance with local code requirements or any other applicable requirements. Tests
and inspections for approval of equipment shall be performed at no additional cost to
Owner.
B. Clearly mark equipment, devices and material with name or trademark of manufacturer
and rating in volts and amperes and other pertinent information on a nameplate.
(NTS: Change or fill in voltage and number of wire systems as applicable in the following 2
paragraphs.) Note: On most 3 phase services, utilities require the neutral to be brought to
the metering location. Provide a neutral conductor to the main metering location, and if
the neutral is not used in the distribution system, specify the neutral to be terminated to an
insulated lug).
A. Electrical power system for the facility operates at 380/220-volt, 3-phase, 4-wire, 50-
Hertz.
A. Contact the following organization for coordinating the incoming power requirements for
the project:
(NTS: Complete the two following paragraphs by adding items as required, such as:
(NTS: Fill in or delete as may be appropriate, the service entrance equipment under each
responsibility as required for this project. Describe interface between power company and
Contractor. Check power company requirements.)
B. Coordinate the work with the organization identified above to furnish and install:

11. Provide all conduit and wire to service pole, extend conduit up pole for distance of
3000 mm (10 feet), and leave sufficient length of conductors to reach the electrical
distribution system overhead conductors. Connections at pole shall be made by
the power company. Perform work at service pole in accordance with the power
company's requirements.
12. Pay charges and fees by power company for providing the electrical service and for
power used at no additional cost to the Owner.
(NTS: If Project requirement is such that a dollar amount of allowance is to be used, then
delete the above paragraph and substitute the following paragraph inserting the dollar
amount of allowance. Contact the power company to verify amount.)
13. Perform all work in accordance with requirements GECOL (General Electric
Company of Libya) and in manner approved by power company.
14. Notify power company, in writing, within two weeks after the contract award date
concerning incoming service requirements.
C. The final, complete installation shall comply with all local statutory requirements having
jurisdiction. The Contractor shall arrange for all necessary permits, pay all fees and
arrange for all required inspections by local authorities.
A. Provide all conduit and wire to service pole, extend conduit up pole as required by
telephone company. Connections at pole will be made by the telephone company.
Perform work at service pole in accordance with telephone company's requirements.
1. Pay charges and fees by telephone company for providing the telephone service
and for telephone used during construction at no additional cost to the Owner.
(NTS: If the telephone service requires considerable site work to bring the line to the
facility, and/or if Project requirement is such that a dollar amount of allowance is to be
used, then delete the above paragraph and substitute the following paragraph inserting the
dollar amount of allowance.)
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
PART 3 - EXECUTION
(NTS: Choose one of the two following paragraphs and describe the necessary information
which is applicable for the project.)
A. Install metering equipment as follows:
(NTS: If meters are to be located on electrical distribution equipment, include the following
two paragraphs.)
1. Obtain from power company drilling templates, dimensions, and mounting
arrangements for metering transformers. Transmit this information to electrical
equipment manufacturer for cutting and drilling.
A. Carefully dismantle and salvage electrical equipment, switches, fixtures, conduits, cables,
wiring, boxes, as necessary to carry out proposed changes. Rehabilitate and relocate items
of equipment as required and as indicated or specified.
A. Each bidder or his authorized representative shall, before preparing his proposal, visit all
areas of the existing structures in which work under this bid is to be performed and inspect
carefully the present installation. The submission of the proposal by this bidder shall be
considered evidence that he or his representative has visited the buildings and structures
and noted the locations and conditions under which the work will be performed and that
he takes full responsibility for a complete knowledge of all factors governing his work.
B. In general, any or all existing electrical equipment and services are to remain in operation
and shall not be disturbed unless otherwise noted in these Specifications and/or on the
drawings or as required for the proper execution of the work.
C. In each area of the work, disconnect and carefully remove the existing electrical
equipment and devices so noted. With the exception of items indicated as having to be re-
used, all such existing equipment and device shall be turned over to the Owner. If not
required by the Owner, remove them from the premises and site. All existing electrical
equipment and devices indicated as not removed or abandoned are to be maintained in
operation and any circuits disturbed by the construction shall be restored.
D. Maintain existing electrical services and systems to and in the buildings throughout the
project and all “down-time” shall be scheduled at least two weeks in advance with the
permission of the Engineer and such scheduling shall be rigidly adhered to.
3.04 DEMOLITION:
A. Survey the existing electrical systems and equipment identified for removal and
representative from the other trades prior to performing any demolition work. Identify all
conduit and equipment to be removed with tags or paint.
C. Equipment, building or structures scheduled for complete demolition shall be made safe
from electrical shock hazard prior to demolition. Disconnect all electrical power,
communications, alarm and signal system.
F. Unless otherwise specifically noted, remove unused exposed conduit and support systems
back to point of concealment including abandoned circuit above accessible ceiling finishes.
Removed unused wiring back to source (or nearest point of usage).
I. Disconnect and remove abandoned luminaries. Remove brackets, stems, hangers and
other accessories.
J. Repair adjacent construction and finishes damaged during demolition and extension work.
K. Where electrical systems pass through the demolition areas to serve other portions of the
premises, they shall remain or be suitably relocated and the system restored to normal
operation.
L. Coordinate electrical power outages to the electrical systems and equipment with the
Owner. Where duration of proposed outage cannot be allowed by the Owner, phase the
retrofit work to allow the system or equipment to be re-connected to the electrical power
system within the time frame allowed by the Owner or provide temporary power
connections as required to maintain service to the systems or equipment. The temporary
power can be from a generator or another part of the facility not affected by the outage
provided there is sufficient spare capacity.
M. Continuous service is required on all circuits and outlets affected by these changes, except
where the Owner will permit an outage for a specific time. Obtain Owner’s consent
before removing any circuit from continuous service.
N. The electrical and process equipment to be removed or relocated under this contract has
been identified on the Drawings. The removal and or relocated of existing conduit, wire
and equipment have not been detailed on the Drawings. Survey the affected equipment
and building areas before submitting bid proposal.
O. Trace out existing wiring that is to be relocated, or removed and perform the relocation or
removed work as required for a complete operating and safe system.
P. Remove exposed conduits, wireways, outlet boxes, pull boxes and hangers made obsolete
by the alterations, unless specifically designated to remain. Patch surfaces and provide

panelboards, transformers, wiring, raceways, etc. furnished and installed to the temporarily
keep circuits energized shall be removed when the permanent installation is fully
operational.
A. Protect electrical equipment from the weather at all times during shipment, storage, and
construction.
A. Defective or damaged equipment or material (as determined by the CM/CS and/or the
Owner) shall be replaced by the Contractor at no additional cost.
A. Obtain data from the equipment supplier shop drawing submittals or equipment
nameplates, and prepare a complete tabulation of all motors over 1/3 hp, electric , and
starting equipment for both, to be furnished on the project.

4. Furnish six copies of the tabulation to the CM/CS when a submission is made.
A. At the completion of the project, provide two sets of drawings that are marked to show
the as-installed equipment, devices, ductline locations and wiring. These sets are to be
provided to the Owner. The markings on the drawings are to be neat, clean and legible.
