Backpack Books

Backpack Books are being sent home this week. The purpose of this program is
to help reinforce the love of reading and to begin developing independent
reading skills. It is not meant to replace your evening reading time.
We’ve talked about how to care for our books:

 Not leaving them on the floor or where a sibling or a pet can get to them
 How to turn the pages carefully
 There’s no writing or coloring in them
 Return them to home/school folders in backpack when done
We’ve talked about the reading process:
1. Look at the cover and pictures to predict/guess what
the book is about.
2. Parents may need to read the book to their child first or
read along with him/her.
3. If your child comes to a word she/he does not know,
suggest looking at the picture, looking at the beginning
and ending sound, and/or rereading the first part or the
rest of the sentence.
4. Ask: Does it sound right? Does it make sense?
It is also fine to just tell your child a word if she/he is stuck.
Your child’s backpack book bag contains either a teacher selected book and the record
sheet. Book and reading abilities vary. Because of this, your child may need to just enjoy
listening to you read the book and watch you track the words with your finger. Other
books and reading abilities will allow your child to “read the book” to you after hearing it
several times. Memorizing the words and using the pictures as clues are parts of the
beginning reading process.
This program will help provide consistent reading and is meant to be a positive reading
time. The backpack books do not need to be returned each day but at least once a week.
A sticker will be added to your child’s sticker chart each time your child finishes a book.
Together in learning,
Miss Edelman

Please continue reading library books and books from your home library
