1 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

1.1 IMPORTANT

1. This Fax Model has been specified as a Class II Unit (ungrounded). Some digital circuitry is connected to
the potential of the Telecom line. That means: If you want to measure in the unit with connected Telecom
line you have to use ungrounded measuring instruments. Otherwise it is possible that you shorten the
Telecom potential to ground.
2. Service technicians must be made AWARE OF ESD and be GROUNDED! To avoid ESD risk you can order
some ESD equipment in the parts list.
3. After each disassembly of the apparatus a high voltage test has to be performed. ( 1,5kV AC )

1- between mains and Telecom line

2- Mains and ground plate
3- Telecom line and ground plate

Attention: Discard used of Spare Parts not according to manufacturer instructions.

WARNING!
Before opening the machine disconnect the Power Cable!
Don’t open the power supply
- HIGH VOLTAGE! -

1.2 ESD

1.2.1 General

ESD is a spark jumping from one conductive surface, charged with static electricity to another conductive
surface. This incredibly fast movement of static discharge (the charge can jump to that conductor in a
nanosecond) can have disastrous consequences, especially for electronic circuitry. We only feel ESD at a
discharge of about 3.000 Volts. However many semiconductors can be damaged by a discharge of just 60 Volts or
less. On non-conducting materials, such as plastics and textiles, charges remain stationary and can not discharge
and are therefore called static charges. Static charges are brought in by people and are generated during their
normal movements.

1.2.2 Precautions to Prevent ESD Damage

Static electricity can not be eliminated but it can be kept under control. Charging can be prevented by an
appropriate grounding system for people and objects that may come into contact with the components or product.

TO PREVENT ESD KEEP THE FOLLOWING RULES:

1. All products being brought in for repair must be
- Processed in an ESD protected working area with a Grounded dissipative mat.
- Kept in ESD protective packing material when not used.
2. Technicians should wear a wrist strap ground connected.

FOR MORE INFORMATION ON USER FUNCTIONS, USER MANUALS CAN BE ORDERED IN

DIFFERENT LANGUAGGES. SEE SPARE PARTS LIST.

voltage) safety level. The phone line input conforms to the TRT safety level.
Before performing any intervention on the CPU board, disconnect the:
• Phone line.
• external interconnect leads (USB),
• mains plug from voltage.

10.4 FCU (FAX CONTROL UNIT)

The CPU board is based on the Digicolor2 circuit which performs in particular the function of microprocessor.

10.4.1 FCU features :

• CPU (ARM9) Digicolor2 (video processing function)
• Memory code + data : Flash 2Mo (8Mx8)
• SDRAM : 16Mo (8Mx16)
• 33600 BPS fax modem Agere DP2V34X
• Line interface
• Scanner interface (Video ADC 16bits)
• Serial interface to OPU
• Stepper motor driver (scanner)
• Loudspeaker amplifier
• USB Slave interface
• External phone interface
• Clock generation
• Serial interface to feature connector board

The board is initialised by a boot program. The executable code is stored in the flash memory.
This flash memory is divided in two zones:
• A zone reserved for the storage of the code
• A zone reserved for the storage of the documents.
If this flash memory does not contain any executable code, the board automatically switches to waiting for a software
download on the USB port. After power-on the code is loaded from the flash memory into SDRAM, and the
microprocessor executes its instructions from the SDRAM. Before printing, the documents are stored as bitmaps in the
SDRAM.

59
The ADC is a WM8192 from Wolfson.

The WM8192 samples up to three inputs (RINP, GINP and BINP) simultaneously. The device then
processes the sampled video signal with respect to the video reset level or an internally / externally
generated reference level using either one or three processing channels.

Each processing channel consist of an Input Sampling block with optional Reset Level Clamping
(RLC) and Correlated Double Sampling (CDS), an 8-bit programmable offset DAC and an 8-bit
Programmable Gain Amplifier (PGA).

The ADC then converts each resulting analogue signal to a 16-bit digital word. The digital output from
the ADC is presented on an 8-bit wide bi-directional bus, with optional 8 or 4-bit multiplexed formats.

On-chip control registers determine the configuration of the device, including the offsets and gains
applied to each channel. These registers are programmable via a serial interface.

The WM8192 can sample and process one to three inputs through one or three processing channels
as follows:

Colour Pixel-by-Pixel: The three inputs (RINP, GINP and BINP) are simultaneously sampled for
each pixel and a seperate channel processes each input. The signals are then multiplexed into the ADC,
which converts all three inputs within the pixel period.

Monochrome: A single chosen input (RINP, GINP, or BINP) is sampled, processed by the
corresponding channel and converted by the ADC. The choice of input and channel can be changed
via the control interface, e.g. on a line-by-line basis if required.

Colour Line-byLine: A single chosen input (RINP, GINP, or BINP) is sampled and multiplexed into
the red channel for processing before being converted by the ADC. The input selected can be
switched in turn (RINP -> GINP -> BINP -> RINP ....) together with the PGA and Offset DAC control
registers by pulsing the RLC / ACYC pin. This is Known as auto-cycling. Alternatively, other sampling
sequences can be generated via the control registers. This mode causes the blue and green channels to
be powered down. Refer to the Line-by-Line Operation section for more details.
