THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

1.1 Introduction

A common skin disorder found in the scalp that affects almost half of the

population in everyone’s growing stages and of any gender and ethnicity is

attributed to dandruff. Everyone will and have been on the stage in their life

where they can experience dandruff. No population in any geographical region

would have passed through freely without being affected by dandruff. The word

dandruff (dandruff, dandriffe) is of Anglo-Saxon origin, a combination of ‘tan’

meaning ‘tetter’ and ‘drof’ meaning ‘dirty’ (Gupta AK, 2004).

Dandruff affects a great factor in our hygiene that it value often causes

itching that can be worsen and can cause hair loss. When neglected it can be

nuisance and can affect to one’s health. There are many products that appear

nowadays that can fight dandruff also known as the “anti-dandruff” products, we

may be familiar with these products because it is available everywhere.

It is mostly mixed in products like shampoo so that the application of the

anti-dandruff will be much easier and mixing it with shampoo we can be benefited

twice, a shiny and clean hair with dandruff free scalp. We all know that these

products include chemical substances that might cause harmful effects on our

body. Shampoos are meant for cleansing, providing good hair care and more than

that we expect. But, the truth is that there are many harmful effects of using

shampoo daily because of the toxic ingredients it contains. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

(SLS) used as a foaming agent is the Education
most toxic ingredient found in shampoos,

(even in the best of products).

SLS is one of the active ingredients used in detergents meant for cleaning

garage floors and engines. Possible damage to hair roots and scalp occurs when

you use shampoos frequently. Some negative effects of the shampoo can cause

cancer, two chemicals reacts forming nitrosamines and parabens – a cancer

causing compound. SLS, foaming agent in shampoo has protein denaturing

properties causing inflammation and skin irritation with many other scalp

problems. Frequent exposure to shampoo can cause rashes, skin inflammation,

itching, redness and eczema because of the various harsh chemicals present in all

the beauty products. Shampoo also had toxic ingredients that can pose a threat to

the entire immune system, if used repeatedly. Though shampoos are made out of

really common ingredients, common doesn’t always mean safe. Most are made

with strong chemical formulas which can be harsh to your skin and to the

environment (Segedie, 2017).

Herbal drugs have been used since ancient times as medicines for the

treatment of a range of diseases. Herbal plants have played a key role in world

health. In spite of the great advances observed in modern medicine in recent

decades, plants still make an important contribution to health care.

Herbal plants are distributed worldwide, but they are most abundant in

tropical countries. Over the past decade, interest in drugs derived from higher

plants, especially the phytotherapeutic ones, has increased expressively. It is

estimated that about 25% of all modern medicines are directly or indirectly
Education

derived from higher plants.

In some particular cases, such as antitumoral and antimicrobial drugs,

about 60% of the medicines currently available on the market and most of those in

the late stages of clinical trials are derived from natural products, mainly from

higher plants. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), because of

poverty and lack of access to modern medicine, about 65-80% of the world's

population which lives in developing countries depends essentially on plants for

primary health care.

Currently, the major pharmaceutical companies have demonstrated

renewed interest in investigating higher plants as sources for new lead structures

and also for the development of standardized phytotherapeutic agents with proved

efficacy, safety and quality. Herbal medicinal preparations are normally very

popular in developing countries with a long tradition in the use of herbal plants

and also in some developed countries such as Germany, France, Italy and the USA

where appropriate guidelines for registration of such medicines exist (Calisto J.B.,

2000). Dandruff is very common. According to Proctor and Gamble, it affects

more than 50% of the population of the USA – so it is more common to have

dandruff than not! It can occur at any age, but is most likely in the early 20s.

In the case for Filipinos, especially women, hair plays a huge role in

building confidence. Sixty percent of Filipinos have dandruff, but not everyone

uses anti-dandruff shampoo and decides to leave it until it will eventually

Figure 1.0 presents the progression of the study following the Theory of

Herbalism- also known as herbal medicine and phytomedicine refers to any

medical treatment in which plants and/or their extracts play the dominant role.

Strictly speaking, herbalism includes aromatherapy and Bach flower remedies,

and crosses the dividing line between therapies through its involvement in

homeopathy (Dalumpines, 2011).

The theory of herbalism is in line with the conducted research as it

emphasizes the use of herbal plants in treating diseases like dandruff. This is an
