UEMM 3243 Engineering Analysis

Tutorial #4
1. A simple power plant consists of an extraction turbine that drives a generator, as
shown in Fig. 1. The turbine receives 3.2 kg/s of steam, and the plant can sell either
electricity or extraction steam for processing purposes. The revenue rates are

Electricity, RM 0.03per kilowatthour

Low-pressure steam, RM 1.10 per megagram
High-pressure steam, RM 1.65 per megagram

The generation rate of electric power depends upon the flow rate of steam passing
through each of the sections A, B, and C; these flow rates are wA, wB, and wC,
respectively. The relationships are
PA, kW = 48wA
PB, kW = 56wB
Pc, kW = 80wc

Where the w’s are in kilograms per second. The plant can sell as much electricity as
it generates, but there are other restrictions.

To prevent overheating the low-pressure section of the turbine, no less than 0.6 kg/s
must always flow through section C. Furthermore, to prevent unequal loading on the
shaft, the permissible combination of extraction rates is such that if x1 = 0, then x2 
1.8 kg/s, and for each kilogram of x1 extracted 0.25 kg less can be extracted of x2.

The customer of the process steam is primarily interested in total energy and will
purchase no more than

4x1 + 3x2  9.6

Develop the objective function for the total revenue from the plant and also the
constraint equations.

2. The advertising alternatives for a company include television, radio, and newspaper
advertisements. The costs and estimates of audience coverage are provided in Table
below:

Television Newspaper Radio

Cost per advertisement $ 2000 $ 600 $ 300
Audience per advertisement 100,000 40,000 18,000

The local newspaper limits the number of weekly advertisements from a single
company to ten. Moreover, in order to balance the advertising among the three types
of media, no more than half of the total number of advertisements should occur on
the radio, and at least 10% should occur on television. The weekly advertising budget
is $ 18,200. How many advertisements should be run in each of the three types of
media to maximize the total audience?

3. A manufacturer produces three models of bicycles. The times (in hours) required for
assembling, painting, and packaging each model are shown in the table below.

Model A Model B Model C

Assembling 2 2.5 3
Painting 1.5 2 1
Packaging 1 0.75 1.25

The total times available for assembling, painting, and packaging are 4006 hours,
2495 hours, and 1500 hours, respectively. The profits per unit for the three models
are $45 (model A), $50 (model B), and $55 (model C). How many of each type
should be produced to obtain a maximum profit?

4. Minimize Z = 5x1 – 4x2 + 6x3 – 8x4

x1 + 2x2 + 2x3 + 4x4  40

2x1 - x2 + x3 + 2x4  8
4x1 – 2x2 + x3 – x4  10
x1, x2, x3, x4  0
5. An automobile company has two factories. One factory has 400 cars (of a certain
model) in stock and the other factory has 300 cars (of the same model) in stock. Two
customers order this car model. The first customer needs 200 cars, and the second
customer needs 300 cars. The costs of shipping cars from the two factories to the
customers are shown in Table below.

Customer 1 Customer 2
Factory 1 $ 30 $ 25
Factory 2 $ 36 $ 30

How should the company ship the cars in order to minimize the shipping costs?
