Louis Pasteur

Louis Pasteur was born in 27th December 1822 in a poor family in Dole France.
In his childhood he enjoyed singing and art but when Louis was exposed to
science as a teenager he found that science was awesome. When he was 16 he
went to university to become a science teacher. Pasteur studied mathematics,
physics and chemistry. After he studied chemistry he became a chemistry
professor at the University of Strasbourg. While he was teaching as a professor at
the university he fell in love with Marie Laurent and had 5 children, however 3
died of typhoid. It was very sad but it drove him to find a cure.
During Pasteur’s time people
thought that microbes such as
bacteria just came out of nowhere.
The people thought that it was just
bad luck. Louis Pasteur did
experiments to see if this was true.
Of course it wasn’t true and his
experiments had proven it. Pasteur
used his knowledge of germs to
investigate liquids such as wine and
milk so that he could see if there
were any bacteria and moulds. He
discovered that if you heat up
liquids it would kill most of
microbes and it would allow the
liquids to last longer. It would be
safer to drink. This process is
known as pasteurising and it is still
done to other liquids and foods as
well such as cheese, juices, vinegar and wine. But one of the downsides would be
that when you pasteurise milk or other stuff it doesn’t just kill the bad stuff but it
would also kill the good stuff. So raw milk (unpasteurised milk) maybe better for
you as it still contains important enzymes for digestion but there may be a
greater chance of you getting sick.
Anyway Pasteur continued investigating diseases. He discovered that if he could
inject a weaker form of disease, the body could fight it off and next time when the
disease comes back, the immune system will be ready for it and it will know
what it should do so it can fight it off quickly. This process is called vaccinating.
Louis died in 1895 when he was 73 years old in September 28.
