Kuwait Government

Background Legislative Branch Judicial Branch

The government of Kuwait is a
semi-democratic government.
Kuwait has a hereditary monarchy
and a constitution. The constitution
was established in 1961. An Emir is
the Kuwaiti term of their born
leader. Their constitution is framed
much like America’s democracy.
They have a legislative, executive
and judicial branch (What type of

2017).
The Legislative Branch is
composed of 50 members. They
each serve 4-year terms (What type
of Government does Kuwait have?,
2017).Kuwait is very different from
America as in they don’t have
political party affiliations prior to
election. They draft bills and have
the authority to remove the
Ministers from cabinets. This
branch can override the Emir’s veto
with a 2/3s vote.
The Judicial Branch works indepently
of the executive and legislative branch.
This branch uses civil and Sharia law
to decide outcomes. They have
divisions that deal with civil, personnel,
commercial and penal issues. To
warrant an appeal the issue must
cause a person to spend more than 3
years in jail or 250 dinars
(approximately 750 USD) (What type

EXECUTIVE BRANCH OF THE

GOVERNMENT OF KUWAIT
The executive branch is composed of the Emir, the
Prime Minister and Cabinet Members. The Emir is
chosen by the previous Emir. It isn’t like most
monarchies. He must be approved by the legislative
branch. If approved, he is the new Crown Prince and
the Emir must still submit 3 names of blood relatives
for consideration. The Prime Minister is also a blood
relative of the Emir. The Prime Minister forms a
cabinet of ministers. (What type of Government
