Research Opportunities for PhD study at Dublin Institute of Technology

INTRODUCTION

Dublin Institute of Technology invites applications for the DIT Fiosraigh PhD Scholarship Programme 2010.
The Irish word Fiosraigh, which means to explore or inquire, underlines the purpose of this scholarship
programme which is to promote the exploration and application of knowledge as part of DIT research
strategy.
The Fiosraigh Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to prospective students planning to undertake
full-time PhD study. Research proposals should be aligned with Dublin Institute of Technology Research and
Scholarship Strategy and consistent with Irish government policy, e.g. Strategy for Science Technology and
Innovation, Strategy for the Smart Economy, The Report of the Innovation Taskforce1.
There are a number of different scholarship options in the Fiosraigh programme, each with its own
assessment criteria. Applicants should submit their proposal in association with a designated Dublin Institute
of Technology R&D Centre or Institute. Assessment will be based on the quality of the research proposal and
the educational background of the applicant, as well as on the alignment with the DIT research programme
and with the specific objectives of the Scholarship scheme. Students already in receipt of a Dublin Institute of
Technology scholarship or similar funding are not eligible.
Assessment panels will be chaired by the Director of Research and Enterprise or her nominee, and will include
two external specialists at the appropriate level and experience, representing the following areas:
 Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; and
 Science, Engineering and Technology.
Awards will be made on the basis of excellence and subject to funding being available and DIT reserves the
right not to award all scholarships.
Funding will be reviewed and renewed annually, based upon successful completion of the Annual Evaluation
of postgraduate research students. Students on the Scholarship programme will attend prescribed modules
associated with the Structured PhD framework approved by Dublin Institute of Technology. All publications
and conference papers, etc. emanating from research carried out must be lodged in Arrow, the Dublin
Institute of Technology Institutional Repository.

scheme has its application process and terms and conditions so applicants are advised to read each scheme
carefully before applying.

COMPETITIVE FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR DUBLIN INSTITUTE

OF TECHNOLOGY STAFF TO SUPPORT A PHD STUDENT

1. DUBLIN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY FIOSRAIGH ENTERPRISE SCHEME

The Dublin Institute of Technology Fiosraigh – Enterprise Scheme is an initiative by which Dublin Institute of
Technology can partner with external, non HE organisations2. Enterprise should be considered broadly, and
includes all disciplines.
The Award will be named ‘The Dublin Institute of Technology Fiosraigh [name of enterprise] Award’ e.g. ‘The
Dublin Institute of Technology Fiosraigh Pfizer Award’
Dublin Institute of Technology and Enterprise partner(s) will collectively:
o Identify the research problem/question of prime interest to the enterprise involved;
o Design a research programme to address these needs;
o Agree intellectual property arrangements.
The research programme must:
o Pursue useful knowledge, underpinned by rigorous processes of discovery and critical enquiry;
o Translate the research into innovative technologies and interventions to drive new export businesses
for Ireland;
o Build institutional and national research capacity and capability.
There is a two-step application process.

STEP 1: PARTNERSHIP APPROVAL

Applications should be made to the Directorate of Research and Enterprise, on the appropriate application
form, with written confirmation of partnership funding for the duration of the 4 years. Each partner will fund
half the total costs. The number of awards made will be subject to funding available.
Eligible costs include a PhD student stipend of €16,000, tuition fees of €5000 and €2000 for project costs, for
each of the four years. All students must be recruited through open public competition. The successful
candidates will be known as ‘Dublin Institute of Technology Fiosraigh [name of enterprise] Award’ Scholars.
Funding is available up to a maximum of 4 years, and will be paid annually, based upon successful completion
of the annual assessment.
Approval at Step 1 is required before public recruitment of the research student may commence.

Approval will be granted on the basis of a defined proposal for research work with specified outputs, and
should be in association with a designated Dublin Institute of Technology R&D Centre or Institute.
Recruitment of PhD candidates for the approved project must be in line with Dublin Institute of Technology’s
Postgraduate Research Regulations (see Step 2 below). Approval at Step 1 is required before public
recruitment of the research student may commence.

PARTNERSHIP ASSESSMENT
Applications from staff members of Dublin Institute of Technology will be assessed and ranked based on the
following criteria:
o Quality of the proposed research and contribution to knowledge; 25%
o Alignment with Dublin Institute of Technology Research Strategy, including quality of the partnership;
and alignment with a DIT designated R&D centre/institute; 25%
o Contribution to Dublin Institute of Technology and national research capacity and capability-building
strategy; 25%
o Track record of the researcher(s) to include dissemination and impact of research, the number of PhD
students supervised and completed, externally earned income, from national or international sources
over the past 5 years; 25%
To be eligible for funding, applicants must achieve a threshold of at least 70% of the total marks available and,
for each criterion, must achieve at least half of the available marks. Applicants will be awarded funding on the
basis of their scores.
Candidates will be notified of the outcome of their application in writing. Please allow 4 - 6 weeks for your
application to be processed.

STEP 2: RECRUITMENT OF RESEARCH STUDENT

All applications to undertake graduate research must be submitted using the Dublin Institute of Technology
official Postgraduate Studies Application Form and must have the support of a potential supervisor. The
completed application form, together with the necessary supporting documentation, must be submitted to
the Graduate Research School Office.
Candidates must have obtained a primary degree classification equivalent to Upper Second Class Honours
(2.1) or above, from an approved University or an approved equivalent degree-awarding body, or have an
approved equivalent professional qualification in an area cognate to the proposed research topic.

ASSESSMENT OF RESEARCH STUDENT

Applicants to the Dublin Institute of Technology Fiosraigh Enterprise Scheme will be assessed and ranked
based on their performance at university, and the details provided on their Postgraduate Research Application
Form.
Candidates may be called for interview and/or assessed on the basis of written work/proposed area of
research. Criteria: Quality of the Applicant: 50%, and Fit with the Research Project 50%.
To be eligible for funding, applicants must achieve a threshold of at least 70% of the total marks available and,
for each criterion, must achieve at least half of the available marks. Candidates will be awarded funding on the
basis of their scores.
Candidates will be notified of the outcome of their application in writing. Therefore, it is important to ensure
that the address provided for correspondence is accurate and current. Please allow 4 - 6 weeks for an
application to be processed.
Closing date for applications will be set in accordance with each approved project. Successful applications will
be expected to commence shortly thereafter.

COLLABORATION SCHEME

The Dublin Institute of Technology Fiosraigh Strategic Collaboration Scheme is an initiative through which
Dublin Institute of Technology partners with other higher education research units. The partners must agree
to a Joint PhD award process in advance.
Dublin Institute of Technology and its HEI partner will collectively:
o Identify the research problem/question of prime interest to the enterprise involved;
o Design a research programme to address these needs;
o Agree intellectual property arrangements.
The research programme will:
o Pursue useful knowledge, underpinned by rigorous processes of discovery and critical enquiry;
o Translate the research into innovative technologies and interventions to drive new export businesses
for Ireland;
o Build institutional and national research capacity and capability.

3. DUBLIN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY FIOSRAIGH RESEARCH EXCELLENCE

AWARD
This is most prestigious research award made by Dublin Institute of Technology and recognizes excellence in
research by individual researchers or research teams, which should be based in a designated Dublin Institute
of Technology R&D Centre or Institute. The purpose of the award scheme is
o To recognise, encourage and reward members of Dublin Institute of Technology academic staff for their
contribution to research;
o To affirm the commitment of Dublin Institute of Technology to research.

DETAILS OF SCHEME
Dublin Institute of Technology will provide one award annually to a researcher or research team to support a
full-time PhD Scholarship. Successful PhD students will be known as Dublin Institute of Technology Fiosraigh
Scholars. Eligible costs include a stipend of €16,000, tuition fees of €5000, and €2000 project costs, for four
years. Funding is available up to a maximum of 4 years, and will be paid annually, based upon successful
completion of the annual assessment.

APPLICATION PROCESS
The application process is competitive. All proposals should be made in association with a designated Dublin
Institute of Technology R&D Centre or Institute, and should be accompanied by a letter of support from that
Centre/Institute. The application form will be available at http://www.dit.ie/researchandenterprise/, from 01

Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application in writing. Therefore, it is important to ensure

o Support for research training, through the number of PhD students supervised and completed over the
past 5 years; 10%
o Externally earned income, from national or international sources over the past 5 years; 10%

STUDENTS

4. FIOSRAIGH DEAN OF GRADUATE STUDENTS AWARD

The Dublin Institute of Technology Fiosraigh Dean of Graduate Students Award recognises the outstanding
achievement by individual students at undergraduate level and is open to talented students who wish to
pursue a PhD. Applications are invited from students of any higher education institution, in Ireland or
internationally.
Applicants should develop their research in liaison with the potential supervisor/supervisory team. The
research should be conducted in association with a Dublin Institute of Technology designated R&D
Centre/Institutes.
Successful candidates will be known as a Dublin Institute of Technology Fiosraigh Scholar, and will be paid a
stipend of €16,000 in addition to their fees, and €2000 project costs, for four years. Funding is available up to
a maximum of 4 years, and will be paid annually, based upon successful completion of the annual assessment.
There will be a maximum of 4 awards per annum.

APPLICATION PROCESS
Awards will be made on the basis of a defined proposal for the work with specified outputs. All applications to

5. FIOSRAIGH RESEARCH MATERIALS SUPPORT GRANT SCHEME

Dublin Institute of Technology offers scholarships of €3,000 to help students who are self-funded. Self funded
students are those who are paying the full tuition fee. The scheme is intended to help cover research
materials, conference travel, etc.
Each postgraduate research student (full-time or part-time) can apply for one grant during the period of his or
her studentship, which can be used throughout the time at Dublin Institute of Technology. Any funds
remaining at the end of four years will revert to Dublin Institute of Technology. Applications are accepted on a
rolling basis throughout the year.
This scheme is not open to students in receipt of any other form of scholarship, either from Dublin Institute of
Technology or a national/international scheme.
Evidence that tuition fees have been paid in full will be required.
Criteria:
 Research Quality: 50%,
 Quality of the Applicant and his/her achievements:
 25%, and Dissemination Plans and Impact 25%.

6. FIOSRAIGH RESEARCH STUDENT ACCOMMODATION GRANT SCHEME

This scheme will provide financial assistance up to a max. €6,000 per year to cover accommodation costs for
research students. It is available to Irish and international students, not in receipt of any form of scholarship,
either from Dublin Institute of Technology or a national/international scheme.
The award is made to exceptional students in any discipline, accepted to study for a PhD at Dublin Institute of
Technology, and who show evidence of making a significant contribution to knowledge and understanding in
their field of study. The research should be undertaken in association with a designated Dublin Institute of
Technology R&D Centre or Institute. Funding is available up to a maximum of 4 years, and will be paid
annually, based upon successful completion of the annual assessment.
There will be a maximum of two awards per annum in this scheme

APPLICATION PROCESS
The completed application form, together with the necessary supporting documentation, must be submitted
to the Graduate Research Office.
Candidates must normally have obtained a primary degree classification equivalent to Second Class Honours
(2.1) or above, from an approved University or an approved equivalent degree-awarding body, or have an
approved equivalent professional qualification in an area cognate to the proposed research topic.
Criteria:
 Research Quality: 50%,
 Quality of the Applicant and his/her achievements:
 25%, and Dissemination Plans and Impact 25%.
To be eligible for funding, applicants must achieve a threshold of at least 70% of the total marks available and,
for each criterion, must achieve at least half of the available marks. Candidates will be awarded funding on the
basis of their scores.

RESEARCH STUDENTS

7. FIOSRAIGH HEAD OF GRADUATE RESEARCH AWARDS

The Head of Graduate Research Programmes will award per annum

o One travel grant of €1500 to the best speaker at the Annual Postgraduate Research Symposium. This
grant must be used by the student to travel to and present their work at an international conference.
The assessment panels will be chaired by the Head of Graduate Research programmes and the criteria
are as follows: Research Quality: 50%, Strategic Relevance: 25%, and Communication Skills: 25%.
o One travel grant of €750 to the best poster at the Annual Postgraduate Research Symposium. This
grant must be used by the student to travel to and present their work at an international conference.
The assessment panels will be chaired by the Head of Graduate Research programmes and the criteria
are as follows: Research Quality: 50%, Strategic Relevance: 25%, and Communication Skills: 25%.
o One award of €500 to the student with the best peer-reviewed publication. Publications considered
will include internationally recognised journals, peer-edited books/chapters in books
Papers/books/chapters must have been published or accepted for publication and lodged with the
Dublin Institute of Technology repository ARROW. A call for submissions will be issued annually. The
assessment panels will be chaired by the Head of Graduate Research programmes and the criteria are
as follows: Research Quality: 50%, Strategic Relevance: 25%, and Communication Skills: 25%.
o An award of €100 to each student who wins a peer adjudicated prize/award from a body external to
Dublin Institute of Technology.

A call for submissions will be issued annually.

8. FIOSRAIGH PHD SCHOLARSHIP EXTENSION SCHEME

Scholarships are available to help students complete their PhD where the funding programme does not cover
the full 4 years. The award covers a stipend of €16,000 annually, up to a maximum of 2 years, upon successful
completion of each year based upon the Annual Evaluation. An additional €2,000 for project costs, which may
include research materials and conference travel, will also be provided annually.
To be eligible, students must have successfully completed at least two years, as indicated by the annual
evaluation and the transfer/confirmation examination. Criteria: the applicant must fulfil at least 2 of the
following criteria
o One publication submitted;
o One oral presentation at an international conference;
o One license/patent application;
o One peer adjudicated prize/award from a body external to Dublin Institute of Technology.
No other applications for funding extensions will be considered, except through this scheme.
All applications should be submitted using the Dublin Institute of Technology official Postgraduate Studies
Application Form and must have the support of the supervisor. The completed application form together with
the necessary supporting documentation must be submitted to the Graduate Research Office.

Deadline for applications is 1 December 2010. Late applications will not be accepted.

ASSESSMENT

Candidates must have successfully completed the previous two years of their research programme and be
recommended for this award by their supervisor.
To be eligible for funding, applicants must achieve a threshold of at least 70% of the total marks available and,
for each criterion, must achieve at least half of the available marks. Candidates will be awarded funding on the
basis of their scores.
