DNA Extraction: taking DNA out of the cell

Restriction enzymes cut the DNA in specific locations

DNA is separated and analyzed using gel electrophoresis (test used)

One DNA has been extracted and cut by enzymes it can be analyzed

DNA fragments are placed at one side of a thin membrane (gel).

An electric current passed through the gel

DNA fragments (have negative charge) move toward the positive end of the gel

Smaller the DNA fragments the faster the father they will move

Used to:

Compare gene composition of different organisms or different individuals

Locates and indentify one particular gene out of then of thousands of genes in an
individuals genome

Paternal Test (who’s the daddy)

DNA fingerprinting (linking suspects to a crime scene)

 Transgenic organism- contain genes from other organisms

 Gene from one organism can be inserted into cells from another organism =
(results)grow a new organism
