YEAR IN REVIEW

President’s Remarks
The year 2017 was a good year for us as an organization.
Over the past 5 years, the West Indies Players’ Association
has strengthened its resolve to better serve our members.

• We made great strides this past year and we are proud of where we are today.
• We have engaged our stakeholders in ways that will see our members getting
even more remuneration and benefits than they did before.
• We foresee that our members, men and women, will be happy with the new in
creases in compensation negotiated with Cricket West Indies (CWI) to take effect
next year.

Additionally, our partnerships with two (2) additional educational institutions allows our
members even more options to further their education, with considerations given to their
schedule and under subsidy from the association.
Significantly, we are even more optimistic about the future, as there are plans to increase
the impact we make on a player’s development, educationally, professionally and socially. We
believe in the power of personal development, and we are convinced it will radically improve
performances on the field and help to prepare our players for life after cricket. As such, in the
coming year, we will play a greater role in personal players’ management and development.

We would like to acknowledge and applaud Cricket West Indies (CWI) and The Federation
of International Cricketers’ Association (FICA) for their continued dialogue and cooperation,
and we look forward to strengthening our relationships with both entities as well as with
our other stakeholders. I applaud WIPA’s hardworking team, and encourage them to bat on,
as we together create a positive environment for our members and continue to contribute
to the development and sustainability of West Indies cricket. Most importantly, I would like
to thank our members for allowing us to serve, and I encourage them to make use of the
opportunities our organization provides.

WIPA remains committed to our members, evolving with an ever changing global cricketing
landscape. We look forward to exciting times in the coming year, ready to face the challeng-
es that may arise.

The West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) is the official player representative
body for cricketers in the West Indies, and is an affiliate of the Federation of In-
ternational Cricketers’ Association (FICA). As the exclusive representative and
bargaining agent of players selected for national and West Indies teams, WIPA is
the authorized and collective voice of all West Indian cricketers, past and present.
WIPA’s goals consist of; seeking appropriate remuneration for players; enhancing
player welfare and development; preparing players for life after cricket; providing
players with advice, and assistance where appropriate; facilitating player involve-
ment in community activities, education and training; and promoting a positive
and harmonious relationship with CWI and other stakeholders.

History

WIPA was established in 1973, and tle down the monopoly it exercised
incorporated in 2003 under the over players. As such, there were

bago 1995. The association was es- ing joining the body. In fact, players

Kingdom by the then West Indies body would mean jeopardizing their

tively. Since then, there have been a
number of players who have served
as WIPA Presidents; former Windies
opening batsman Wavell Hinds cur-
rently holds the position.
WIPA’s raison d’etre has been to
serve as the West Indian players’ rep-
resentative body. WIPA was estab-
lished in an era when territories were
still under British rule, and cricket,
like other institutions, was managed
and controlled by the plantocracy
and the ruling “white” class. The then
cricket board administration saw the
emergence of this unionized body
of cricketers as an attempt to whit-

Federation of International Cricketers’ Association

The Federation of International Cricketers Associations (FICA) is the global play-
ers’ representative body in cricket. FICA was established in 1998 to co-ordinate
the activities of all national players’ associations which protect the interests of
professional cricketers throughout the world. It brings together the world’s crick-
eters, regardless of nationality, religion, political persuasion or race, under an
international body focused on matters of general interest to the game and its
players. FICA has continued to evolve as the collective voice of players globally.
FICA’s stated aim is to be recognized and respected as the global representative
federation of all professional cricketers, past and present around the world.

FICA Principles
All FICA activities are informed by its Guiding Principles, which was adopted in
2015 and include:

1. Representation and Voice

2. Integrity
3. Employment Rights
4. Welfare, Education and Career Transition
5. International Cricket Structure
6. Good Governance

FICA Services
FICA continues to work at bringing value to players and its member players’
associations, whilst engaging effectively on behalf of players at the top level of
the game. FICA has continued to provide its core services to players and mem-
ber players’ associations, including:

1. Advocating for players globally on structure of cricket issues, employ-

ment rights and contract security, integrity, doping and anti-corruption is-
sues, player health and safety
2. Presenting player views to ICC CEO and Cricket Committee’s, Member
Boards and MCC
3. Negotiation of ICC Player Terms and Prize Money (41% increase) for ICC
events 2015-2023
4. Domestic T20 advice to players and players’ associations regarding events
and approved/disapproved cricket
5. Player contract dispute resolution including success in player contract
claims against the ICL in India
6. Negotiation of ICC codes and regulations which affect players, including
code of conduct
7. Collective player contract negotiation including Caribbean Premier
League and Pakistan Super League
8. Event and tour security reviews for ICC events and bilateral tours
9. Players’ association best practice

International Cricket Structure

FICA released its International Cricket Structural Review in 2016, and has been
involved, on behalf of players, in discussions with the ICC and Member Boards
during the review of the structure of international cricket. FICA has presented
player views on this to ICC management, Member Board CEO’s and the MCC
Cricket Committee. International cricket is vital to the entire global cricket
economy, and to all professional players. FICA continues to urge the ICC to
deliver a clear and compelling future for International cricket, which includes
meaningful change to competition structures.

FICA is supportive of improving, balancing and adding context to all three for-
mats of international cricket, allowing it to survive and thrive. FICA is advocat-
ing for:

1. Global thinking: for the good of the global game;

2. Balancing the three formats better and working together with domestic
T20: introducing windows for T20 leagues, or other workable solution;
3. International cricket should be “best v best”: players should not be
forced to choose between club and country, and scheduling between for-
mats should generally not conflict;
4. All International cricket needs context and it needs to be competitive:
new, competitions with context, based on merit;
5. Providing clarity in the calendar and fair protections for players: in reg-
ulations/contract structures;

Page 5 - West Indies Players’ Association - Year in Review

6. Retaining talent in international cricket by redistributing money more
equitably to help close player wage gaps between domestic T20 and in-
ternational cricket: this does not mean players from top earning countries
should be paid less. Players in all countries should be paid fairly;
7. Clear pathways for associate countries, based on merit

2017 Social Media Summary
WIPA continues to believe in the power of social media and has gained from
the many benefits it affords. Through the power of sharing and interaction, the
association continues to build and engage the community of cricket lovers that
support West Indies cricket.

In 2017, WIPA increased social media content generation and audience en-
gagement over the previous year, with a continued focus to promote the as-
sociation’s initiatives and membership, resulting in explosive audience growth.
The promotion and celebration of our members has been key, which was mo-
tivating for many and has urged in others the desire for excellence. Through
WIPA’s social media, the public has also become more familiar with our mem-
bers’ names and faces and have become avid followers of their performances

as well as their out of cricket engagements. Further, more individuals are more
knowledgeable of WIPA’s varied initiatives and engagements, as the social me-
dia campaign has brought into sharper focus the association’s role in support-
ing players and contributing to the sustainable development of West Indies
cricket.

Player Development Workshops
The West Indies Players’ Association’s Player Development Program (PDP) is
aimed at adequately preparing cricketers both on and off the field. Since the
inception of the PDP, WIPA has sought to provide a personalized support ser-
vice, which caters to the holistic needs of our members in the region, ensur-
ing they are well aware of, and prepared for, happenings on and off the field,
during and after cricket.

The Player Development Workshops provide guidance to players on a number

of topics including: WIPA, Media and Public Relations, Anti-Doping and Health,
Anti-Corruption, and Education. These workshops are typically conducted
during regional tournaments, and usually last for approximately an hour.

Since 2016 WIPA has conducted eight (8) workshops with regional and West
Indies players in Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica. These workshops were con-
ducted before and during the Regional 4-day Tournament in Jamaica and in St
Vincent with the West Indies Women Team. Over 180 players, coaching and
management staff attended the workshops.

Anti-Doping
Doping in sport remains a serious issue. Athletes, who dope, put their health
at risk, and threaten the integrity of clean athletes and the reputation of sport.
Doping is the use of artificial enhancements and methods to gain an advantage
over others in competition. It is cheating and is fundamentally contrary to the
spirit of sport. Doping damages competition for clean athletes who play by the
rules.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) coordinates and monitors the fight
against drugs in sports. Its key activities include scientific research, educa-
tion, development of anti-doping capacities, and monitoring of the World Anti
-Doping Code (Code) – the document harmonizing anti-doping policies in all
sports and all countries.

WIPA, ICC, CWI Role in Anti-Doping

The ICC Anti-Doping Code, compliant with the WADA Code, ensures cricket
plays its part in the global fight against drugs in sport. Through the adoption
and implementation of the ICC Anti-Doping Code, ICC continues in its efforts
to:

(a) Maintain the integrity of the sport of cricket.

(b) Protect the health and rights of all participants in the sport of cricket.
(c) Keep the sport of cricket free from doping.

WIPA has conducted several Anti-Doping workshops with the regional teams
in order to educate them on the Anti-Doping rules and violations and the sanc-
tions they might face if caught doping. Anti-Doping material which contain
vital information on doping are handed out to the respective players during
the workshops.
