ABSTRACT
Shock absorbers are an important part of the suspension systems of automobiles, motorcycles, and other wheeled or tracked
vehicles, as well as aircraft landing gear and the supports for many industrial machines. Large shock absorbers have also
been used in structural engineering to reduce the susceptibility of structures to earthquake damage and resonance. A
transverse mounted shock absorber, called a yaw damper, helps keep railcars from swaying excessively from side to side,
and is important in passenger railroads, commuter rail, and rapid transit systems because it increases passenger comfort and
prevents railcars from damaging station platforms.
The main function of vehicles suspension system is to separate the vehicle body and passengers from the oscillation created
by the irregularities and to provide continuous contact of vehicle’s wheel from the road surface. The vehicles suspension
systems are mainly classified in three categories (1.passive suspension system 2.semi-active suspension system 3.active
suspension system).
Firstly we have shock absorber of PLEASURE automobile as an existing model. We will check the strength ability, damping
factor, shock absorbing capacity etc with the help of software available at the college by static and dynamic analysis. For this
we have to take the dimension of each part of existing shock absorber. For this purpose we are to cut shock absorber on the
lathe machine and then make the model on the Pro-E/CAD showing dimension of each component. After this we have to use
the ANSYS software for static and dynamic (harmonic) analysis by changing three different materials for spring. So that we
will be able to suggest which is better and also to tell which type of material will help to increase the ability of shock
absorber.

road and the wheels strike a bump, the spring is parts of shock absorber are given bellow;
compressed quickly. The compressed spring will
attempt to return to its normal loaded lengthened, in
so doing, will rebound past its normal height, causing
the body to be lifted.
The weight of the vehicle will then push the spring
down below its normal loaded height. This in turn,
causes the spring to rebound again. This bouncing
process is repeated over and over, a little less each
time, until the up-and-down movement finally
stops. If bouncing is allowed to go uncontrolled, it
will not only cause an uncomfortable ride but will
make handling of the vehicle very difficult. The
design of spring in suspension system is very
important. In this project a shock absorber is
designed and a 3D model is created using Catia V5.

5 CONCLUSION:
1. We have determined the different parts
dimensions of shock absorber by cutting it on
the lathe machine. After knowing the dimension
of the each part we developed the model of
existing shock absorber with the help of
AUTOCAD software.
2. Since the deflection of carbon fibre material is
more than other materials (Spring Steel and
Beryllium Copper) hence shock absorbing
capacity of Carbon Fibre is more than Spring
Steel and Beryllium Copper.
Carbon fibre > Beryllium copper > Spring steel
3. Since equivalent stress produced in Carbon
fibre material is also more than in Spring Steel
and Beryllium Copper hence there will be more
chances of breaking (failure) in case of Carbon
Fibre.
Spring steel < Beryllium copper < carbon fibre
4. Since the Carbon Fibre has the greater shock
absorbing properties but disadvantage is that it
may break earlier than Spring Steel and
Beryllium Copper.
