Competitive Appraisal 2

 NURSING RESEARCH. Is the systematic objective process of analyzing phenomena of importance

to nursing. It includes all stories concerning nursing practice, nursing education and nursing

administration.

 RESEARCH PROCESS INVOLVES THE FOLLOWING PHASES:

o Conceptual phase- what research to conduct?

o Design phase- Quantitative or Qualitative

o Implementation phase- gathering and analyzing of data

o Dissemination phase- research forum to inform research results to the community or

respondents

 BASIC RESEARCH. Generates new knowledge

 APPLIED RESEARCH. Is concerned with using knowledge to solve immediate problems

 REVIEW ON RELATED LITERATURE (RRL)

o set the frame work of research

o familiarize themselves with the existing knowledge base

 PRIMARILY RESOURCES. Reports written by the researchers who conducted the research

themselves

 SECONDARY RESOURCES. Prepared by someone other than the original researches

 QUALITATIVE RESEARCH. Subject to an individual interpretation. It uses narrative description of

data. Inductive reasoning is used.

*INDUCTIVE REASONING. Generalizations from specific observation


TYPES OF QUALITATIVE RESEARCH:

1. PHENOMOLOGICAL RESEARCH. Concerned with the lived experiences of humans.

2. GROUNDED THEORY RESEARCH. Seeks to describe and understand the key social psychology

and structural processes that occur in a social setting.

3. ETHNOGRAPHICAL RESEARCH. It is used to holistically study the meanings, patterns, and

experience with a defined cultural group.

4. HISTORICAL RESEARCH. Describes or analyzes the events that occurred in the remote past

5. CASE STUDY. Is an in-depth examination and analysis of a person or group of people in relation

to nursing issues or problems.

6. FIELD STUDIES. Natural investigations in a community.

7. QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH. May be experimental or non-experimental. Concerned with

objectives and tight controls over the research situation. Deductive reasoning is used.

*DEDUCTIVE REASONING. Specific predictions from general principles

8. COHORT STUDY. Kind of trend study in which specific sub-populations are examined overtime.

These samples are drawn from specific age-related group.
