INTRODUCTON

An art museum or art gallery is a building or space for the exhibition of art, usually visual art. Museums
can be public or private, but what distinguishes a museum is the ownership of a collection. Paintings
are the most commonly displayed art objects; however, sculptures, decorative arts, furniture, textiles,
costumes, drawings, pastels, watercolors, collages, prints, artist's books, photographs, and installation
art are also regularly shown. Although primarily concerned with providing a space to show works of
visual art, art galleries are sometimes used to host other artistic activities, such as performance arts,
music concerts, or poetry readings.

Contemporary art is art produced at the present period in time. Contemporary art includes, and
develops from, postmodern art, which is itself a successor to modern art. In vernacular English,
"modern" and "contemporary" are synonyms, resulting in some conflation of the terms "modern art" and
"contemporary art" by non-specialists.

AIM
Page | 2
 Encouraging public engagement and demand for excellence in art, design and architecture.
 Promotion of better architecture and built environment.
 Helping everyone understand and appreciate the art and culture of the country

OBJECTIVES

To a family looking for entertainment on a Sunday afternoon, a trip to a local history museum or
large city art museum could be a fun, and enlightening way to spend the day. To city leaders, a
healthy museum community can be seen as a gauge of the economic health of a city, and a way to
increase the sophistication of its inhabitants. To a museum professional, a museum might be seen
as a way to educate the public about the museum’s mission, such as civil rights or
environmentalism.

Museums are, above all, storehouses of knowledge.

“ For the increase and diffusion of knowledge.”

- James Smithson (Founder of Smithsonian Institution)

SCOPE OF WORK

 Designing a modern art museum require adequate knowledge about its

functioning and connectivity of spaces and would deal with the creative aspects of designing at
a monumental level.
 The KMOMA will bring, under a single roof, two broad areas of work: collection, preservation
and exhibition of fine art objects, both from India and abroad, dating from the late 18th
century to the contemporary times; and the promotion of art education and research.

SITE DATA

HISTORICAL

It is one of India’s largest cities and one of its major ports. The city is centred on the east bank of
the Hugli (Hooghly) River, once the main channel of the Ganges River, about 96 miles (154 km)
upstream from the head of the Bay of Bengal; there the port city developed as a point of trans-shipment
from water to land and from river to sea. A city of commerce, transport, and manufacture, Kolkata is the
dominant urban centre of eastern India.
The city’s former name, Calcutta, is an Anglicized version of the Bengali name Kalikata. According to
some, Kalikata is derived from the Bengali word Kalikshetra, meaning “Ground of (the goddess) Kali.”
Some say the city’s name derives from the location of its original settlement on the bank of a canal
(khal).

CLIMATOLOGY

Kolkata has a subtropical climate with a seasonal regime of monsoons (rain-bearing winds). It is warm
year-round, with average high temperatures ranging from about 80 °F (27 °C) in December and January
to nearly 100 °F (38 °C) in April and May. The average annual rainfall is about 64 inches (1,625 mm).
Most of this falls from June to September, the period of the monsoon. These months are very humid and
sometimes sultry. During October and November the rainfall dwindles. The winter months, from about
the end of November to the end of February, are pleasant and rainless; fogs and mists occasionally
reduce visibility in the early morning hours at this season, as also do thick blankets of smog in the
evenings.

PROJECT BRIEF

The new Kolkata Museum of Modern Art will represent Kolkata’s cultural renown by establishing itself
as an ‘Art City’, bringing modern and contemporary, national and international art together with
performing arts, music, cinema, photography, literature, fine and sculpture. KMOMA will expand the
multiple functions that support a traditional contemporary museum to provide a platform for artists,
scholars, students and visitors alike to have an enhanced experience of the critical role art and museums
play in the community.

SITE LOCATION

The site for the new building is situated in Rajarhat, a new commercial, industrial and residential district
on the north-eastern fringes of Kolkata, building on the Old City and Salt Lake City from the nineteenth
and twentieth Centuries respectively. It is one of India’s fastest growing cities and is destined to
become a vibrant hub in Kolkata with an increased presence of cultural activity.
