World Power and World War I: 1890-1918

U.S. History A
American Imperialism refers to the economic, military and cultural influence
of the United States in other countries. Industrialization, initiated the desire for
American businessmen to sell their goods to various international markets.
Additionally, the increasing influence of social Darwinism led to the belief
that the United States was “inherently responsible for bringing concepts such
as industry, democracy, and Christianity to less developed ‘savage’ societies.”
These attitudes and factors led to the “Age of American imperialism” in the
Philippines, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Germany, Austria, Korea and Japan.
But by early 1914, war broke out between the Allies and Central Powers. The
European front quickly became a war of empires, and the United States would
have to decide whether or not they would be involved and join the war.
