Hi all 4x4 Action Group Members,

Fabfender (Freddie) does some excellent work in Lesotho.
He has asked the 4x4 Action Group for support, all details below.
I think it's a wonderful opportunity to have some fun, have an adventure, do
some good, support a jolly good fallow & prove we are more than just
Webwheelers.
Over to Fabfender...
Greetings Folks,
Some of you may be are aware that I run the Lesotho Mission team and its
efforts in Lesotho. We have a village that we care for that is extremely
remote (last we took people out there, everybody was screaming that it’s
not even on T4A) However it is magnificently picturesque and the road in
there is spectacularly beautiful. However it is not an extreme 4x4 route,
unless it rains then it can get exciting. Anybody interested in seeing what we

However due to the remoteness of the village, it is desperately, desperately

in need of assistance in upgrading what can only be described as the most
heinous of schools. Due to its location we are unable to get a truck in there,
with furniture. GPS co-ordinates for Solane’ (S 28°54'13.6" E028°34'41.2")
So we are requesting help from the "Action" part of the Action group. We are
looking to plan a trip just to that village - to go and revamp the currently
very broken and dilapidated furniture and buildings as far as possible.
Primarily a bit of woodwork required.
We can probably comfortably take 15 - 20 vehicles, being totally self

sufficient. Trailers are do-able, but will be tricky when wet. We will be
camping in the village, so interaction with the locals is a given, come and
experience true African hospitality. What we do require if you join us, is that
you come with a willingness to make a difference, if you have power tools
that can assist in getting the job done, please let us know and bring it
along. If you know how to use your power tools, then we definitely need
you.
We are looking at R400.00 per vehicle. This money will ALL be used on
supplies for the upgrade of the school. If there is s a big enough demand we
can go the route of organizing shirts etc for the trip.
The trip is planned for 12 -15 March. There will be time for some self drive -
exploratory 4x4ing. We have asked Ben Van Dyck to take care of the
adventure travel stuff. There are no routes, so all routes will have to be
discovered. Hopefully we will be able to discover routes that are worthwhile
and we can make it an annual event akin to the river trips.

I will be DELIGHTED to help, having the tools, woodworking knowledge and

the willingness to make a difference....
I would like to know what type of material (wood) is needed as I have quite
a few offcuts which is free and in my way.....
NOW - To speak to my bosses and see if I can get this trip sponsored
somehow(Fuel/"entry" fee) - CASH AINT THERE!!! Willingness however -
ANYTIME!!!!

committed for March and Alan can't get time off from his new job, HOWEVER

The idea for this trip, is to go and put new tops on those desks and chairs as
seen in the pics that Ben added, add new chalk boards etc.

Have you perhaps got sizes and quantities on the table tops and seats?
I am thinking that Supawood in 22mm would be sufficient and WAY cheaper

than a hard solid wood species. The Supawood however will need to be cut
and routered aling all edges, sanded down and then sprayed with a
hardwearing two-part varnish to ensure longevity....
It will be easiest to premanufacture this as it is a long process - needs at

least 4-5 coats of spray...
NOW: I am prepared to do all the labour including the sanding, cutting,

routering, spraying, etc.....BUT I NEED SPONSORS FOR THE MATERIAL
PLEASE!!!!!
The boards come at a cost of R 885+ R45 cutting per 2750x1830....can

manufacture plenty of these units from one board. Even a bookshelf or two
can be made to make their lives easier....

Manny, there is no list in either thread, as we have had interest shown but
nobody indicating that they are going.

received from the folk in Lesotho are not to be trusted. So my thinking was
to take materials, tools and a genie and cut to size and fit there. I realise
that their wont be enough time to spray 4 coats etc.
I have a 2.5kva genie in Lesotho, so if we get one or 2 more small genies,

with enough hands we can still make it happen. There are only about 40
desks in the school. Which clearly then means you need to be there to lead
the way.;D;D;D
I will take you up on your offer to source the timber, as I have no idea where
to start.
As for finances folks if anybody would like to make a contribution that will be
hugely appreciated - pm me for banking details.

I agree with Nutsman - precut the MDF.

I'm not sure about spraying on the varnish though.
Maybe pre-paint with pink wood primer here & hand paint there.
That way they can be repainted from time to time.
Now, is anyone actually attending?

Right a quick update, I have sent a message to my people on the ground

there, to ascertain how many desks, and if possible a size. But cell reception
is sporadic, so we wait.
The list so far:

that we can pre-cut them for the March trip.
It will make transporting the wood a lot easier, and give us more time to fit it
to the table frames ;)

I have to agree - To cut a 2.7 x 1.8 m sheet weighing 98kg's is gonna be a

BIG ballsup....
I am still prepared to have everything cut and prepared before the trip - as
mentioned earlier...

screwdriver. Also bring some tools.
If someone requires a co-pilot and "klippakker" for the road, let me know.

Where do we stay/camp?
What day do we plan to be where?
How far is it? IOW where are we going to in Lesotho?
How much time is given to the actual school intervention? (This will dictate
the time for travel)

I am putting money away to fund Diesel for my trip (will be using my own
vehicle) - you are MORE than welcome to sit Shotgun in my Suz....

Andrew, the rough plan is as follows:
12 March: Everyone travel to Rampai village on their own pace. (Quickest

road is via Caledonspoort -> Mafika Liseu pass (Awesome views!) -> Le Jone
-> Rampai) We meet up at the "community hall" and everyone sleep over
there after a lekker braai.
Two decent long drops available there, and plenty camping space.
13 March: We travel to Solane on a very scenic road. Takes about 2-3 hours,
depending on how many "photo" stops.
We set up camp in the field next to the school, after which we start working
the desks.
Possibly an afternoon drive / swim in the river if time allows.
14 March: Finish up the desks (The plan is to finish them on the 13th though
- depending on how many people we are)
Go for an adventure drive, and explore the area.
15 March: Everyone finds their way back home. If you leave early enough it's
possible to go back via Sani Pass, but it will be a VERY long day.

Ben I agree, but as always time is a factor. Our plan for February is to try
and getting the building up and running. Hoping to have enough building
pro's available to MAKE that happen.
So if anybody here is keen to join us in February for a taster of this trip, to

accompany Ben to Solane' to measure etc - you are more than welcome.
Dates are to be finalised, waiting for confirmation from the guy who is going
to oversee the building operations to confirm.

took us 7 hours for 200km
Its very far for a week end..

What will be the best for the trip, Rubicon or Amarok? Methinks the Amarok
will have more loading space, but how wide is that last piece of road to

We normally fill up at Bethlehem, and have plenty left when we get back
there.

"expeditions" up there. The mud and river is something to revel in >:D
If ever you have the opportunity, please go with these guys, man it is worth
every second. Especially if there is a little time to kill and some keen
volunteers to go scout some new places and routes. Ben is always keen
though.... >:D

for a weekend. Combining 2 of my passions, 4x4 and woodwork on one
weekend plus it's for a brilliant cause!
Just a quick question/suggestion: 22mm shutter board would work out

cheaper and lighter, no? Once it's painted/varnished it will work just as well.

I partly agree with you, BUT to achieve a good finish on the pine ply will not
be as easy or "cheap" (Shutterboard is made rough - as the name implies -
used for construction / shutters, etc )
If you purchase Pine Ply the costs are even more...

Fair enough. I suppose it's because it's in my nature to watch the pennies,
that I don't mind the extra elbow grease to get the finish right. I had to build
my bar counter in Plett with shutter board when we first opened and once
we'd made some money, we replaced it with a nice thick sleeper top. Some
of the tables are still in service 17 years later.

Greetings Folks,
Some of you may be are aware that I run the Lesotho Mission
team and its efforts in Lesotho. We have a village that we care
for that is extremely remote (last we took people out there,
everybody was screaming that it’s not even on T4A) However
it is magnificently picturesque and the road in there is
spectacularly beautiful. However it is not an extreme 4x4
route, unless it rains then it can get exciting. Anybody
interested in seeing what we are about can visit our FB page:

However due to the remoteness of the village, it is

desperately, desperately in need of assistance in upgrading
what can only be described as the most heinous of schools.
Due to its location we are unable to get a truck in there, with
furniture. GPS co-ordinates for Solane’ (S 28°54'13.6"
E028°34'41.2")
So we are requesting help from the "Action" part of the Action

group. We are looking to plan a trip just to that village - to go
and revamp the currently very broken and dilapidated furniture
and buildings as far as possible. Primarily a bit of woodwork
required.
We can probably comfortably take 15 - 20 vehicles, being

totally self sufficient. Trailers are do-able, but will be tricky
when wet. We will be camping in the village, so interaction with
the locals is a given, come and experience true African
hospitality. What we do require if you join us, is that you come
with a willingness to make a difference, if you have power tools
that can assist in getting the job done, please let us know and
bring it along. If you know how to use your power tools, then
we definitely need you.
We are looking at R400.00 per vehicle. This money will ALL be

used on supplies for the upgrade of the school. If there is s a
big enough demand we can go the route of organizing shirts
etc for the trip.
The trip is planned for 12 -15 March. There will be time for
some self drive - exploratory 4x4ing. We have asked Ben Van
Dyck to take care of the adventure travel stuff. There are no
routes, so all routes will have to be discovered. Hopefully we
will be able to discover routes that are worthwhile and we can
make it an annual event akin to the river trips.

So we are back from an amazing trip to Lesotho, we had 7 Attachment(s)

loads of rain making the trip to Solane one very long mud
patch. Trailers will be a big challenge if it rains in March.
The details of the work to be done:
31 Desk tops 600 x 730mm

Bolt holes 520 x 450mm
41 Bench tops 250 x 730mm

Bolt holes 140 x 510mm
The school itself is missing a door, they say they have one but dont know
how to hang it. So we need necessary tools to cut and hang the door.
Pic 1 & 2 the desks in the school.

Pic 3 The walls and we need a way to hand the black board
Pic 4 the outside of the school that accommodates a 130 learners.
Pic 5-7 The existing kitcken that needs a door and windows.
We have been asked if we can help to throw a thin concrete screed on the
school floor. Not sure if we will have time to do this, if not if we supply 5
bags of cement they will do it.
So we need to provide 5 bags of cement, and tools to do the job? They will
get river sand from the river.
There are a no of broken glass panes in the windows
2 x 255 x 285
1 x 435 x 285
3 x 438 x 275
1 x 290 x 465
The WFP is currently building new kitchens for all the schools in the area. So
the folk at Solane want to change their existing 3x3 building into a class
room when the new kitchen is finished.
It will require:

Door - Standard door to fit on site ( we need to provide door)
Not sure if it is possible, but if we have enough hands we can paint the
inside of the school white. i figure a cheap 25litre PVA should do the job. It is
built with rock and mud.

Ok so the initial plan as Ben pointed out remains. (12-15 March)
We meet up at Rampai Village at the hall that we always use. ( Rampai 001
S29 00.807 E28 32.480 2218 m )
I will be leaving Kempton at 5.00am so if anybody wants to meet up along
the way and travel in convoy, please let me know.
Next morning we leave Rampai for Solane' around 6.00 am - we will do

breakfast on the go along the way.
Should be in Solane' around 9 at the latest.
Set up camp and get busy with the work that needs to be done.
That night we will kuier around the fire. If each vehicle can bring 2 bags of
wood I figure we will should have enough.
Next day we can go explore the mountains, we have been granted

permission by the chief.
There is a lake close by, so those that are so inclined can attempt some
fishing.
There is currently water in the village, so we should be okay for water and
we are close to a river that is flowing strongly at the moment.

We normally do breakfast at the Spur at the casino in Bethlehem, one of

those R25.00 jobs. The parking is also more "secure" and available
particularly with trailers. We then fill up at the One stop next to the casino in
Bethlehem and make our way to Fouriesburg simply because its quicker.
But I suspect Ben and I may travel together, from Kempton so you are
welcome to join us from here.

Other important stuff:
1) Please check that you have a VALID passport.

2) If you have VHF radio please indicate on the list.
3) Lesotho is always cold - so prepare for lows of 0 - -5 degrees.
4) We have had people who have said that the local water in Lesotho has
made them sick, so if you have concerns take drinking water.
5) Make sure you are well equipped to secure your tent against serious
wind.

The timber & varnish etc has been ordered and paid for.
Still waiting to hear about the paint etc.
Nutsman is currently in PE with his mother who is having heart surgery.

With the Generator loaded (if still required to bring? 5KV) in the Pajero I am

En dit my maat is die rede waarom ek dit hier doen....die finale laag en
skuurwerk sal nogsteeds daar gedoen word.....
Dit is nie te se omdat iemand iets verniet kry, hulle maar net ja en amen
moet se vir substandaard nie.....so iok dienooreenkomstig....die mense wat
hiervoor betaal.....ek wil verseker nie gelable word as n kansvatter of

As ek so na daai weer kyk smaak dit my ons is in vir 'n lekker sessie. Met
daai water daar bo kom die koue ook saam, aande gaan koud wees (so
2mm koud). brrrrrrrrr.

This trip is going to be amazing. Really looking forward to sharing this trip
with each of you.
You really need to be prepared for temps of around -5. Then chuck in some
protection for wet weather. If you have gumboots and you have place, take
them with, you can thank me later.
I will post an update on the trip tomorrow, still waiting to hear from one
other vehicle if they are joining us.

Ek hoop nie ek het al daardie moeite gedoen met 'n dual battery system om
die yskas aan die gang te hou, as dit so koud gaan wees dat 'n yskas nie
nodig is nie..;D
Anyway, is daar enigiets waarmee ek nog kan help? Ek behoort nog bietjie
plek agter in die bakkie beskikbaar te hê indien benodig? Ek het net 'n
seiltjie wat nie goed seel nie, so hout kan dalk nat word..

Ockert, looks like we will have enough radios for each vehicle in convoy.
Cell signal is sporadic but available in Rampai. Roaming rates apply. In
Solane there is no cell signal as far as I am aware. But Ben normally has a
sat phone, if required for emergencies.

Not sure what you mean???

2. I'm not sure about cellphone reception at the village, but there is
reception very close to the village.
3. I'm taking a sat phone with, so you are welcome to use it.
