The introductory section gives you a brief on the company and tells
you about what the package contains. If you are a first-time user and
have just bought your first personal computer, the section that follows
tells you your hardware and software requirements needed to run
Indica. It gives a cursory glance on how to install Windows
95/98/200/NT/XP, printer drivers, applications and Adobe Type
Manager. This is important and should be done properly before you
get down to installing Indica. For further details on installing
Windows and ATM please refer to their respective manuals. The
third and fourth sections explain in detail how to install and run
Indica on your personal computer. The last section concentrates on
troubleshooting information - the do's and don'ts while working with
Indica.
For those of you who have a working knowledge of your personal
computer, as well as that of Microsoft Windows and its operating
conventions, you can easily skip the Basics of Installing Windows on
your computer. Indica is very easy to use. To install Indica software
on your computer simply launch the Installer and select "Start
Installation" from the Menu. The installer does not require any further
user intervention. Once Indica is installed it works straight-away
with most of your applications running on Windows - word processing,
page-layout, spreadsheets and graphic applications. For more
details on installing Indica and using it on your computer refer to
Chapters3 & 4of your User Manual.

To help you understand your User Manual, we have tried to make it
as simple as possible with standard formats and a few terminologies.
In order to be able to use Indica productively and efficiently a number
of things need to be taken care of before installing Indica. To
ensure a trouble free installation and use of Indica, follow the
sequence given below:
_ Check and ensure that you have the necessary hardware
_ Check and ensure that you have the necessary software
_ Install Windows
_ Install Printer Drivers
_ Install ATM
_ Install Windows Applications
_ Install Indica
Details on each of the above are discussed in this section of the
Manual.
_
2_____________________
There is a minimum hardware configuration that you must have for
proper usage of the Indica software:
_ Pentium or Celeron compatible computer
_ 32MB RAM on the computer
_ 2GB Hard disk
_ One CD-ROM Drive
_ Color monitor
_ Windows compatible Mouse
_ 1 Serial (COM) port
_ 1 Parallel (LPT) port
If the configuration on your computer is not according to the above
specifications, you may either not be able to install Indica at all, or
you may have trouble using Indica on such a computer. We,
however, recommend the following configuration for an efficient and
productive use of Indica.
Computer
You must have an Pentium or Celeron based IBM PC compatible
computer.
Memory
A minimum of 32MB RAM is required to be able to install and run
large applications such as PageMaker and Microsoft Word.
Hard Disk
Most applications running under Windows95/98/2000/NT/XP can
use Indica. To make full use of the features of Indica, you may like
to use several of these applications. Windows applications are large
and take a lot of hard disk space. So to have a word processing program,
a page layout program and a graphic design program loaded
along with Windows on your hard disk at all times, you will need
atleast 2GB of hard disk space. However, you may like to add more
applications in future. We, therefore, recommend atleast 2GB hard
disks.
_
CD-ROM Drive
Indica software is delivered on a CD-ROM disk. To read this CD you
require one CD-ROM drive.
Monitor
We strongly recommend the use of a SVGA color monitor for Indica.
You can use lower resolution monitors too, but the quality and
sharpness of display will be inadequate.
Mouse
You may use any Windows compatible mouse.
Serial and Parallel ports
You need a minimum of one parallel port to install Indica. We
recommend 2 serial and 1 parallel ports for your computer. You
normally connect a Windows compatible mouse to a serial port. This,
then leaves no port available to connect your serial printer (if you are
using a serial printer) or connect your computer to another computer
for communication. We thus recommend 2 serial ports for your computer.
Terminology: Serial port is also referred to as COM port or
Communication port. Parallel port is also referred to as LPT port or
a Printer port.
Printer
You can print your Indica documents on all printers compatible with
any version of Windows. These include all PostScript printers
including image setters, PCL compatible HP LaserJet printers and a
wide variety of Dot Matrix printers. You should, however, have
sufficient memory on the printer to print documents of great complexity.

You must now install the applications that you want to use with
Windows. Follow the installation procedure supplied with the software.
Examples of some popular softwares are-Ms Office,
Pagemaker, CoralDRAW etc. You can install Applications at any
time, before or after installing ATM and Indica. However, some of
the applications like CorelDRAW require some special information
to be installed before they can really work with Indica. In such cases
you should install Indica once again after installing the
application.

_ Remove the Activator from its packaging. It's a small device
with connectors on both ends. Each Activator carries a serial
number. Carefully note the number, record it and quote it in case of
any queries related to the Activator.
_ The Activator is connected to a parallel port on your computer.
However, if you do have more than one port, connect the Activator to
the second parallel port (marked as LPT2). You normally connect the
printer to the first port (LPTI). Also note that the Activator has two
ends - on one side there are pins and on the other side grooves.
Always ensure that the end with pins is connected to the computer.
Connecting it wrongly will damage the Activator.
_ To connect the Activator to the LPT port, switch off the printer.
Remove printer cable if connected to the computer. Then carefully
insert the pins end of the Activator into the LPT port. Now connect
your printer cable to the Activator. Refer to your computer's User
Guide for precautions to be taken while connecting peripheral
devices to your computer.
_ Tighten the screws. Do not leave the screws loose. Loose screws
can damage the Activator, the computer and the printer.
_ If your computer has only one LPT port, connect the Activator to
this port and connect the printer cable to the other end of the
Activator.
_ Once connected, the Activator should not be removed from the
computer until absolutely necessary.
__
_ You will get the following message if you have not connected the
Activator to your computer (See Fig 2.1).

_________6
The Activator is an electronic device and you should handle it with
care.Take the following precautions:
_ Do not drop it on hard ground.
_ Do not touch the pins of the Activator. Touching them will
generate a static discharge that may damage the electronics of
the device.
_ While connecting the Activator to a computer ensure that you
connect it only to a parallel port of the computer.
_ Before disconnecting the printer always ensure that you have
switched it off.

The Activator, part of the Indica package, is a hardware device that
must be connected to each computer on which you wish to run Indica.
'The last 4 digits of the serial number of the Activator and the Indica
CD must be identical for you to be able to install Indica at all. Once
connected, the Activator must not be removed from the computer.
Also remember that the Activator. is not transferrable, which means
that it will only work with the copy of the software supplied with this
Activator and with no other software supplied by Summit or any
other vendor.

This section gives you a few tips on how you can use your Indica
software with some specific applications running on Windows. If
you encounter any problems while using Indica or while printing an
Indica document please refer to the next section "Troubleshooting -
The Do's and Don'ts".
What is Script Manager
Script Manager allows you to implement Indian languages on
Windows 95 or higher. It also makes the fonts available for most of
the applications running on Windows. By providing you with keyboard
interface for Indian languages, Script Manager allows you to
select any language to work with.
Once you have installed Indica and restarted Windows, Script
Manager automatically gets loaded. An icon at the botom of your
screen will appear which indicates that Script Manager is running.

key, e.g., if you want to type in Hindi, you would press the Ctrl Alt
Shift keys and the H key to get into the Hindi script. If you click on
Keyboard in the menu of the Script Manager you will see (Fig-3.2).
As shown here, you have a choice of standard keyboards in each language.
Select any keyboard of your choice and type your Indian language
text without compromising on your earlier speed and
accuracy.

languages contain a great number of conjuncts. Following is a list of
keyboard commands for the various languages.

WordPad application which comes along with Windows. You will see
the following window for WordPad.

In WordPad click on format in the main menu and select Fonts (See
Figure 3.4) For more details on how to select fonts please refer to
your Windows User's Guide. Once you have selected an Indian
language font (Hindi) and the required point size, click OK. You will
see a cursor blinking on the screen. Press and hold down the Ctrl Alt

If you get something similar to the above characters, when you were
typing _______, on your screen (See Fig3.6) you should check whether
you have done the following:
_ Have you selected the right font in the font menu?
_ Is the Script Manager open and running.
_ Is the language you selected ticked in Script Manager? Have
you activated the Indian language keyboard?
Once you have typed in the text, you can now print it to the printer.
Before you print, make sure that the printer you are using currently or
the one you want to use is properly installed and correctly set up. For
more information on setting up the printer and printing a document
please refer to the Windows User's Guide.

Another important feature of Script Manager is the use of the
Numeric Keypad for Indian languages. This feature is available with
those languages which consist of both Roman and their own
numerals.
So if you are working with Hindi you have the Roman numerals
available on the main keyboard (123 ... ) while the Hindi numerals
can be typed through the Numeric keypad. You don't have to switch
back & forth between the English and the Hindi keyboard in order to
type in your Roman numbers.
__ ________(Numeric keypad) 456 (Normal keyboard)
This feature is applicable in all Indian languages which use both
kinds of numerals, except in Bengali and Assamese where numerals
are available as a separate font. The language numbers are also
available on the Alternate keyboard which has some punctuation
marks as well.
__
_________ ____________
With Indica you can use many languages at the same time. We shall
take an example to demonstrate the way this can be done. Suppose
you want a report that has Hindi, English and Malayalam languages
in it. Once you have selected the Hindi font Chanakya from the Font
menu, hold down the CtrI Alt Shift keys and press the H key. You are
ready to type in Hindi.
____________________
If you want to type in an English sentence in between, then this is
what you do. Select the English font you want, e.g., Times New
Roman. Now hold the Ctrl Alt Shift keys and press the Spacebar.
This will activate the Roman Keyboard for you. You can now type in
your English text.
______________________Chanakya Chanakya
If you want to type in Malayalam now, the procedure is the same.
Select the Malayalam font Panchari from the Fonts menu. Hold the
Ctrl Alt Shift keys and press the M key. The Malayalam keyboard
becomes active. You can type in Malayalam now.

Here are a few tips on how to optimally use Indica on your
computers.
_ To activate any Indian language keyboard always press
down and hold the Ctrl Alt and Shift keys along with the
desired language key.
_ The numeric keypad is functional. This means that if you
want to use Indian language numerals along with English
numerals you can type them from the numeric keypad. You
don't have to switch to the English or the Alternate keyboard.
_ In PageMaker you can enter text in the Story Editor for fast
data entry. In order to see the Indian language in your Story
Editor, select Preferences from the Edit menu. In the window
that opens at the bottom is the specifications for the Story view.
Change the font to the language font in which you are working
and click OK. You can now type your text in the Story Editor
in the language you want.
_ Fonts, whether they are English or Indian language fonts,
take up a lot of memory. If you have a number of them loaded
in your system your computer will get slower. So only keep
fonts that you use all the time. Remove any fonts that are
seldom used by you.
_ While working in MS Word or PageMaker, if you have to
use English and Indian language fonts simultaneously, you can
create Style sheets specifying the Font name, size, leading and
other Paragraph specifications and assign a keyboard command
to your stylesheet. Thus, you can increase your work
__
speed by easily switching between different styles by a simple
keyboard command.
_ Back up your files frequently. In case of file corruption
you atleast can retain some of your work and not have to
start all over from scratch.
_ Using Indica with Microsoft Office
For using Indica with Microsoft Office applications, just
follow the simple steps mentioned below:
_ Open Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel wherever
you wish to work.
_ Before you can start making documents you need to
do some setting.
_ Open the 'Tools' menu and select 'Auto Correct'
_ Switch off all the option in the 'Auto Correct' tab as
` shown below.
5__-&"!
_ If you are using Indica with Microsoft Word, click on
the 'AutoFormat As You Type' and switch off the options
as shown in Fig-4.2. Remember that you won't find this
option in Microsoft Excel.
__
5__-&"#
_ Now click on the 'AutoText' tab and again switch off
'Show AutoComplete tip for AutoText and Dates'
option. This option too would not be available in
Microsoft Excel.
_ Click on the 'AutoFormat' tab and switch off the
options as shown below. This also is a Microsoft
Word feature and is not available in Microsoft Excel.

__
_ Now you need to change the Font setting. Click on the
font drop down list that shows the actual name of the font
and not the typeface. To do this, open the 'Tools' menu
and select 'Customise'.
_ In the Customise dialogue box, click on the 'Options' tab
and switch off 'List font names in their font' option.

When you run into problems you can often solve them by asking
yourself a few simple questions.
_ Are you trying to do something new?
_ Have you changed anything recently? Like installing new
hardware or software?
_ Are your problems limited to one application only?.
_ Are you having problems printing your file?
By narrowing down your choices you can solve your problems quite
often. Consult your User Manual to see if you have installed
everything correctly. If you still cannot solve the problem then contact
Summit or your Indica dealer. We have listed down a few do's
and don'ts for you to follow while working with Indica.

_ Do not delete or modify the following files from your hard
disk
i Script Manager
sm.dll, sm.exe, *.kbd
ii Visible font and other files
*.Pfm, *.Pfb, .TTF
iii Initialization files

_ Do not close Script Manager while using Indian languages
_ Do not switch off ATM
_ Do not disconnect the Activator
_
_ Handle the Activator carefully - the pins should not bend or
break. You should not touch them either - this will generate a
static discharge damaging the Activator
_ Do not move the Activator around. Use one Activator
per terminal.
_______________________
_ Some of the Indica files are corrupted or accidentally
deleted?
_ You should reinstall Indica on your computer.
_ When your computer is infected by virus and you
suspect that Indica files may also have been infected?
_ You must do a virus check.
_ ____6?_______________/_______________ __________
_____________ ________._"
If any Indica file is infected you must re-install Indica. Also check
your lndica CD for virus infection. A "Resource not found" error
from the Script Manager is a sure sign of virus infection.
_ What if Script Manager says 'Activator not detected on
Printer port,, even when you have connected the
Activator to your computer?
You must do the following:
_ Check if the Activator is connected to the port (The
parallel port and not the serial port, as mentioned
earlier).
_
_ Check if the Activator is connected properly at
both the ends and that it is not loose.
_ Disconnect it and check to see if the pins are dam
aged (broken or bent).
_ Check if the serial number for the Activator and your
Indica software is the same.
_ Check the printer port for damages. Try and print
directly from the port without connecting the Activator
_ Some Indica files may be damaged. Re-install
Indica.
__________ ________*_/_____._-_____________ _______
______ __ ______
_ What if you don't see Indian language fonts in any of the
applications that you are using?
You must check the following:
_ Is it a Windows application?
_ If not, fonts will not work with non-Windows applications.
_ Have you updated, reinstalled or modified any of your Windows
files?
_ If the problem was not there before your modification then it is
your updating that is causing the problem. Re-install Indica.
_ Are other English fonts being displayed in the fonts menu?
If yes, then the problem lies with your Indica fonts. Re-install
__
_ Is it a new application? Were Indian language fonts being dis
played on this application before?
_ If it is a new application then it may need to install certain
special information before it can work with Indica. You should
re-install Indica after installing the application.
_ Is this applicable only to a particular application?
_ If this is the case then something unique about the application is
causing the problem. Try your applications manual or re-check
your hardware configuration to see what's wrong. Confirm with
Summit or your dealer if Indica fonts work with this
application.
_ Is Adobe Type Manager installed and active?
_ If it is, then the problem is elsewhere. If not, then install it
properly. And switch it on from the ATM Control Panel.
_ Is Script Manager loaded.?
_ The icon of Script Manager should be visible at the bottom of
the screen or the Script Manager Window should be open. If it
is not, then open it from Program Manager.
_ What if you are not able to enter Indian language text?
You must check the following:
_ Does this happen with a specific application only?
_ If it does, then the problem is with the application. Sometimes
certain applications need special information for languages.
You must therefore reinstall Indica after you have installed your
application. __
_ Is ATM installed and active?
_ If it is not then switch it on through the ATM Control Panel and
restart Windows.
_ Is Script Manager active?
_ If not, then open it through Program Manager. Check the key
board in the menu to see if the language you have selected is
ticked.
_ What if Indian language fonts are not printing?
You must check the following:
_ Are you using the correct driver for your printer?
_ Go to Control Panel and double-click on Printers. In the dialog
box that opens check if you have installed the printer-driver.
(Refer to your Windows User's Guide for more details.) If not,
then install the relevant printer-driver.
_ Is the printer configured properly?
_ It should be set on the port on which the printer is physically
connected, e.g., if the printer is connected on the LPTI port it
should be configured to that port only.
_ Are all the cables connected? Are there any problems with the
Activator?
_ If the Activator is not connected properly you will get the mes
sage, "Activator not detected on Printer port".
Check to see if the screws are tight. Check the pins of the
Activator to see for any damages.
_ Does your document print from another computer?
__
_ If it does, then the problem is with the first machine's
configuration.Contact your hardware vendor to set it right.
When nothing works report to your Indica dealer or Summit along
with the following information:
Hardware configuration
_ Your computer model, its CPU
_ RAM on your computer
_ Hard disk capacity
_ Color Monitor connected to computer
_ Cards, if any, installed in your computer
_ Printer, its make and configuration
Software Configuration
_ Windows Operating System version
_ Details of Servicepacks/updates, if applied
_ ATM version
_ Indica registration number
_ Software installed on your computer
The following should be kept in mind while you are using Indica.
_ Each time when you change the language (by selecting the font
of that language) also change the keyboard, else the text will
become garbled. Switch to Roman keyboard when you want to
key in text in English using the appropriate keyboard
combinations.

_ Ensure that Script Manager is open and running whenever you
want to work with Indian languages.
if you get any error messages while using lndica, read the contents
carefully - often it gives you a hint about what is wrong and how you
can resolve the problem. If you can't resolve it yourself, note down
the error message and call Summit or your Indica dealer for help.
You must also describe, what exactly you were doing when the
particular error message occurred.
Even if there is gibberish on the screen, do not hesitate to inform your
dealer. The experts who developed Indica will get enough clues to
solve the problem.

All the Indian scripts have originated from the ancient Brahmi script
which is phonetic in nature. The alphabet in each may vary some
what, but they all share a common phonetic structure. The
differences between scripts primarily are in their written forms,
where different combination rules get used.
All Indian languages contain only the basic alplabets. The
composite characters or conjuncts are formed through a combination
of these basic characters. These arc essentially a cluster of Lipto four
consonants without the intervening implicit vowels. The shape of
these conjlincts can differ from those of the constituting consonants.
These Conjuncts are formed by putting the Link/Halant (,) character
between the constituent consonants.
eg. __________________________
___ _________
Link (,) key
The implicit vowel in a consonant can be removed by addition of a
Link (,) key. All conjuncts are formed by typing a Halant character
between consonants. A conjunct may consist of upto 4 consonants
joined by Halants or Link key.
eg. _____________________________________________
________________________________________________ _
!___"_________#________________________________
In practice, a Halant or Link (,) key is shown only if consonants do
not change their shape by joining up. Tamil script has no conjuncts,
and thus an explicit Halant sign always gets used.
eg. _____ __
_____ ___
Given below are some Devanagari examples where Halant or Link (,)
key does not disappear:
eg. _____$________$__________%____________%________
_
Alternate forms
The Indian scripts have a set way of character formation but with
time alternate forms have evolved. Keeping in mind this, we have
provided with the original as well as the alternate form of character
formation (though it is a question of debate as to which is the more
acceptable form). An ALT key is provided in the keyboard which
when pressed after the character, changes its form.
eg. __ __ ALT &_ (Alternate)
'_________'__ALT _(_ _(Alternate)
Half forms
There may be times when you would want to use half characters but
would not like them to join with the next character. The ALT key
allows retention of the "half form" for the preceding consonant, and
prevents it from combining with the following consonant.
eg. ____________)____________________ALT __________
________________________________ ALT _ ____
Explicit Halant
A Halant is used between consonants to form conjuncts. But many
times in Sanskrit and Vedic texts, one may wish to show an Explicit
Halant which would be shown on the previous consonant, and which
would prevent the consonant from joining with the next one. ALT key
pressed before a Halant forms an Explicit Halant.
eg. ________________________________ ALT _ ____
___._0@1_.___________
All the Indian languages have multiple keyboards. These are
standard keyboard layouts like the DoE based Phonetic, Remington,
standard Linotype or the Linguist keyboard. Since these keyboard
layouts are different from each other the Link (,) and ALT keys are
placed in different locations on each keyboard.
