UBC Admissions Changing 2019
Starting in 2019, UBC is changing how they evaluate applicants for admission. Please use the following
guidelines to help your Grade 10 and 11 students plan for and select their courses.
1. Students must still meet UBC’s general and degree-specific admission requirements. UBC’s general
admission requirements and the degree-specific prerequisites have not, and will not, change.
- Graduation from high School
- The English Language Admission Standard (for students who haven’t completed
at least three years of full-time study in Canada)
- The Grade 11 and Grade 12 degree-specific prerequisites
2. Students should still focus on their achievements beyond academics. The Personal Profile continues to be a
very important part of UBC’s online application. It helps UBC assess students’ preparedness for university study
based on a broad range of experiences and achievements.
3. Students should consider UBC’s holistic approach to assessing secondary school coursework. Starting in
2019, UBC will no longer calculate a four-course average based on an approved Grade 12 course list. UBC will
take a holistic approach to academic assessments and will consider all Grade 11 and Grade 12 courses when
evaluating the competitiveness of a student’s application – and emphasis will be placed on academic courses
related to their intended area of study.
UBC’s holistic approach will focus primarily on marks in academic courses, but will also consider breadth, rigour,
and relevancy of coursework:
1. To what extent has the student excelled in secondary school, as evidenced by their grades?
2. To what extent has the student challenged themselves in secondary school, as evidenced by
the number and academic rigour of courses completed?
3. To what extent has the student taken courses in subjects that are relevant to their intended
area of study at UBC?

Students can demonstrate competitiveness in a number of ways, beyond their grades:

- Challenge themselves – Show UBC breadth and rigour in their course selection,
and/or take advanced courses (e.g. AP, Calculus, dual credit, etc.).
- Demonstrate knowledge in their area of study – take courses related to their intended
areas of study (e.g. Math, and Science courses if they are applying to Bachelor of Science).
Why is UBC taking this holistic approach? The recognition of breadth, rigour, and relevancy of coursework is not
an admission requirement, nor should it encourage students to dramatically alter their high school course
selection. The purpose is to recognize that grades are not the only way to demonstrate readiness for post-
secondary studies.
While many applicants in 2019 will get offers of admission to UBC through an academic assessment based
primarily on grades in academic courses, it may be advantageous (though not required) to demonstrate breadth,
rigour, and relevancy in secondary school coursework.

Find out more on UBC’s website! Students can find information about these changes on the planning
for 2019 admission to UBC webpage.

Kelty Mental Health for Families

Kelty Mental Health is a great provincial resource for families who would like information and support
on youth and young adult mental health issues such as anxiety, (hidden) depression, eating disorders,
ADHD, and much more. Visit http://keltymentalhealth.ca/family for information.

Cannabis: Talk to Your Teens

Many parents picked up this resource at our recent Parent/Teacher interview session.
Parents may find this helpful, given that the legalization of marijuana is scheduled for

Bounce Back & Reclaim Your Mental Health

Feeling overwhelmed, tired or like you’re in a rut? Are you more worried than usual or find yourself feeling
angry more easily? Bounce Back® may be able to help.

Bounce Back® teaches effective skills to help individuals (aged 15+) overcome symptoms of mild to moderate
depression or anxiety, and improve their mental health. Participants can learn skills to help combat unhelpful
thinking, manage worry and anxiety, and become more active and assertive.

Available for free across BC, Bounce Back® has been shown to help reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety
by half, and over 90% say they would recommend it to a friend or family member.

June Exam and Assessment Week June
The LVR June Exam schedule will be posted by early May. Please
see the general schedule posted here, noting that the Grade 10 and
11 Numeracy Assessments will be included in the official schedule.
 Click here for the provincial exam schedule dates/times.

Exam and assessment week allows for summative assessments,

including examinations, portfolios and portfolio conferencing, and performances. Although classes are not
officially in session, teachers are available for tutorial sessions and support for students. As the District is moving
away from exam week formats, and with fewer provincial exams, we expect to move to a different model for
exams and assessment next year.

AP Exams
All students wishing to write AP Exams, and who have paid their AP Exam fee to the Office, must attend one of
the pre-registration sessions in April in the Multi-Purpose Room. Sessions run on:
 Tuesday, April 17, 2018 (from 11:40 am – 12:25 pm or 3:25 pm – 4 pm)
 Wednesday, April 18, 2018 (2:15 pm – 3:45 pm only during Early Dismissal Day)
Please arrive on time and bring a pencil.
Contact Ms. Kroker, Ms. McTague, or Mme. Robertson if you have any AP exam
questions.

Supporting Positive Attendance

Chronic absence (missing 10 percent or more of school days) can be an early warning
sign of academic trouble. When students improve their attendance rates, they
improve their academic prospects and chances for graduating. If your child is
struggling to attend school, please contact your school counsellor or administration.

Here is what you can do as a parent/guardian:

Make school attendance a priority • Talk about the importance of showing up to school everyday, make that
the expectation. • Help your child maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good
night’s sleep. • If possible, avoid appointments during the school day. • Don’t let your child stay home unless
truly sick. Complaints of headaches or stomachaches may be signs of anxiety.

Resources: Please see Attendance Support for Families email attachment for more information

How to Access Your Child’s Teacher

If your child is having a difficult time with a class, or if you have a
question or concern, your first point of contact is your child’s course
teacher after you have a conversation with your child.

Any concerns you may have as a parent should be directed through a

brief email request for a meeting or telephone conversation. Please
expect at least a 24 hour turnaround in communication as teachers are
busy with classroom instruction, and will return your call or email as
soon as possible. Please refrain from direct visits to classes while they
are in session as it may be disruptive—always check in at the Office first.

If any challenges cannot be resolved, then a referral to a counsellor or

to administration may be warranted. We welcome and encourage Carla Wilson's English 11 class works with
healthy and proactive communication with our parent/guardians. seniors on an intergenerational project.
