“He has made everything beautiful in its time.

”(Ecclesiastes 3:11)
Time for God?
To grow in a genuine love relationship with other people, one must spend and share time
alone with them. One of an educator’s most valuable possessions is his/her time and it often seems
to be in short supply. With ever increasing demands and higher student performance expectations,
serving in education can become a vacuum which consumes all of one’s time, especially when
coupled with such responsibilities as marriage, parenthood, and community service. In the midst of
this swirling, ever growing time gorging, vortex of education arises the scripture, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness
and all these things will be added to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33) Can God add the extra time that we need each day in our lives?
God has given us enough time to do what He asks us to do but not enough time to do everything self and others are asking us
to do beyond His will. How do we know what His will is? How do we balance all of this? Whom will we choose to serve first with our
time in education and in life? Will it be self, others, God or a constant mix and juggling of these three? How does one stay in touch with
and connected to God? How do we practically seek Him first? How do we spend time alone with Him in order to grow and mature in our
relationship with Him amidst so many responsibilities?
For most of us, just attending a church service and a small group or Bible study is not enough to truly grow and fully mature in
our relationship with God. The church service and small groups are just the starting lines, the time outs, or perhaps the half times
where we begin or are encouraged in these relationships and journeys. Giving our first love, Jesus, several hours per week in a crowd
is not enough time, just as several hours per week spent with our spouses, children, or close friends while in a crowd would not be
enough to grow and mature in our relationships with them. We all need intimacy with God, not just information, encouragement, and
inspiration about Him. We need time alone with Him one on one just as Jesus needed it with His heavenly Father.
How do we, particularly educators, grow in our closeness, our intimacy with God? A first step is to honestly assess where we
are now with God and ask ourselves if we want to grow further and deeper in love with Him. Do we truly want Him to be our first
priority? If we do, we must ask Him what He wants, listen to Him, and then obey. Jesus said, “If you love me, obey me.” (John 14:24)
You are invited to take the self-evaluation below to assess your current relationship with God and His heart’s desires for you.
