They will and Shall function as modal verbs, which areauxiliary verbs which help
us convey the meaning of sentences.
WILL
Expresses the future with going to, another way ofexpressing the future is using
the modal verb: 'will'. Thefuture 'Will' (or 'Will' Future) is used to make predictio
ns forthe future, i.e., to discuss a future not planned or uncertain.
How is it used?
1) ‘Will' has a use in common with 'going to'. Both forms areused for
predictions of the future.
The difference is that 'going to' is used to predict the nearfuture in relation to
the situation in which we live:
However, we use 'will' when our prediction is not based onwhat is happening, if
not in our beliefs. We can say that thesepredictions are more subjective, while
the formed with 'goingto' are more objective.
I will pass the exams (contracción: I’ll pass the exams). I’ve studied a
lot – Aprobaré los exámenes. He estudiado mucho.
She will (Contracción: She’ll) do it. I know her – Lo hará, la conozco.
SHALL
Shall is used as will, but its use is much more educated, sowe can find it in any
expression in which we should go to aperson who does not know, a superior, a
person of an oficial..establishment, etc. However, as we said use and structures
of sentences are the same.
1. Make suggestions or offer help. Also to ask for instructions oradvice. Onl
y used in interrogariva and the first person of thesingular and the plural.
Your structure is: Shall I...? or Shallwe...?
2. Replace at will in the first person singular and plural, but onlyin very
polite and formal written English.
2) The expression Let's (affirmative both negative) will take the QT: shall
we?
In the interrogative form, there are cases where 'will' isreplaced by 'shall'.
Let's see which are:
I’m cold. Shall I close the window? – Tengo frío. ¿Cierro la ventana?
Shall we go to Puerto Rico next summer? – ¿Vamos a Puerto Rico el
verano que viene?
