Southern Growl could add brewing facility

Southern Growl could
soon expand following
Greer City Council’s recent
decision to amend zoning
ordinances pertaining to
brewing facilities in com-
mercial zones.
The business is one of
five applicants submit-
ting expansion requests
to Greer’s Planning Advi-
sory Committee (PAC) for
Thursday, April 5.
“As we look to grow and
add a brewing facility to
our current operations,
there is no question that
we would love to stay in
the City of Greer,” said
Matt Bowes, owner of
Southern Growl.

always been deemed a
SWAT-type call, but it just

building for three or four
hours with no care. Now,
after 20 years, we realize
that these situations are
all encompassing and re-
quire police, fire and EMS
to initiate response as

The training comes
on the heels of a school
shooting in Parkland,
Florida, which claimed
the lives of 17 people at a

Sprah, who was a private
contractor working on

fatal open head trauma,
secondary to blunt force
trauma and entrapment
in moving machinery at
around 10:30 a.m.
Officials with the Pel-
ham Batesville Fire De-
partment responded to
the scene, but Sprah was
pronounced dead shortly
after first-responders ar-
rived.

Arts Exhibition is a region-
al art exhibition presented
by the City of Greer, the
Greer Cultural Arts Coun-
cil, and Partnership for To-
morrow.
Open to artists living
within a 100-mile radius
of Greer, this juried exhi-
bition seeks to recognize
the outstanding quality
and diversity of work be-
ing generated by artists
of the Upstate region of
South Carolina.
The Jury Committee
consists of Greer Business
Leaders and Artists.
Because this year’s art
show was closely tied to
the festival, there were
two themes.

dle College Charter High
School will showcase their
senior projects on Thurs-
day, April 12, from 4:30-
6:30 p.m., at 138 W. McEl-

“With our new home,
we now have the perfect
opportunity to share what
we do with our communi-
ty and launch a showcase
evening,” said Heather Ti-
manus, Development Di-
rector at GMC.
In August 2017, GMC
moved into their new
home, a 46,000 square-
foot building, where se-
niors will have tables set
up displaying their proj-
ects and internships. They
will also be available to
share their experiences.
“Our students spend
their entire senior year
working with business
partners and mentors in
our community to com-
plete internship hours
and to develop individual
projects/products,” Ti-
manus said. “As a Project
Based Learning school, the
showcase will provide our
seniors with the opportu-
nity to make their projects

funding may see an in-
crease this year.
With the federal govern-
ment passing the omnibus
bill, funding for Commu-
nity Development Block
Grant (CDBG) funds and
HOME funds increased.
“I imagine we will get
a higher allocation,” said
Greer Assistant City Ad-
ministrator Mike Sell.
Douglas Dent, Interim

(GCRA), presented a con-
servative application for
CDBG and HOME funds
due to the uncertainty of
the federal government’s
actions.
“At this time, we are ask-
ing the budget allocations
to be approved as they
were presented during the
public hearing a couple
weeks ago,” Sell said.
The Annual Action Plan
is Greenville County’s Ap-
plication to the Federal
Government (US Depart-
ment of Housing and Ur-
ban Development) propos-
ing the use of Community
Development Block Grant
(CDBG), HOME and Emer-
gency Solutions Grant
(ESG).

n a move that feels like sadly letting go
of a beloved, elderly pet, it appears it’s
time to send our old farm truck to that
big garage in the sky...or more likely, a
nearby junkyard.
It’s not that I feel it needs to be put
out of its misery--it’s mighty 10 cylinder
engine has rivaled a Merkava tank for its
powerful longevity-- but like countless
Dodge trucks from 1999-2003, I fear it
has now turned against, and indeed is

Q: How do you sell a
vehicle with a lien amount
that’s higher than the
actual value of the car?
DR: First, you need to
find a way to cover the
difference between the
amount of the lien and
what you can get for the
car. Let’s say the car is
worth $12,000, and you
owe $15,000. That would
leave you $3,000 short.
The bank holds the title,
so unless you give them
the payoff amount of
$15,000 you’re not getting
the title.
The easiest and sim-
plest way would be if
someone buys the car
for $12,000, and you had
$3,000 on hand to make
up the difference. If you
don’t have the money to
make up the difference,
you could go to a local
bank or credit union and
borrow the remaining
$3,000.
I really hate debt, but
being $3,000 in the hole
is a lot better than being
$15,000 in the hole. Then,
you could turn around
and quickly pay back the
$3,000 you borrowed.
You’d give the total
amount owed to the bank,
they would give you the
title, and you would sign
it over to the new owner.

DR: I’m glad you’re
paying attention to the
finances around your
house. Of course, there
are some things you must
have. We call these “ne-
cessities.”
Most things are not ne-
cessities, though. If your
air conditioning breaks
down, or you have car
repairs, those are things
you must spend money
on to fix.
Things like new fur-
niture, vacations, and
eating at restaurants are
not necessities. They’re
things you might want,
but they’re not necessary
— especially when you’re
trying to pay off debt.
I always recommend
people take a hard look
at their priorities, and
remember there’s a dif-
ference between wanting
something and needing
something to survive.
It can be hard, and it
may mean everyone has
to go without a few things
they want for a while. But
if your parents are serious
about getting out of debt,
they’ll do it. And it really
won’t take all that long.

receives funds

Ripple, a cryptocurren-
cy company, donated $29
million to flash fund all
projects on the Donors
Choose website last week.
The website is designed
to allow teachers to seek
crowd funding for class-
room projects.
One of the requests to
receive funding came from
Jordan Laird, band teacher
at Greer Middle School.
She requested $2,564 for
60 tuner/metronomes &
contact microphones.
“My students need a
tuner/metronome and
a contact microphone,
so they can succeed at a
higher level by receiving
individual feedback on
their intonation or pitch
of their instruments each
class period,” Laird said
on the website www.do-
norschoose.org.
Laird provided some
general economic facts,
including the school being
located in a low income or
high poverty area of the
district with over 80 per-
cent of the students at the
poverty level.
“Our students often
come from single parent
households where they
might be expected to help
with their siblings or take
care of themselves while
their guardians work odd
shifts,” Laird said. “We
know that our students
do not always have the re-
sources, time, or support
at home to do their home-
work or excel with their
practicing.
“While our students are
in class, we want to focus
on their growth as musi-
cians and use the time we
have with our students to
its full potential,” she said.
“Our students are very cre-
ative, ready to learn, and
love positive feedback.”
The band program has
close to 300 students at
GMS.
“Providing the techno-
logical resources to our
students is challenging,”
Laird said. “Our goal is to
make sure all the students
feel like they are succeed-
ing and enjoying their
time learning in our class-
room.”
“Our program is grow-
ing exponentially every
year, resulting in two band
directors and two separate
band classes meeting at
the same time every day,”
she continued.
Currently, a single class
has upwards of 60 stu-
dents.
“This is an amazing
‘problem’ to have,” Laird
said. “However, it is very
difficult for one teacher
to reach this many stu-
dents with the amount of
individual attention they
deserve in every class pe-
riod.”
“The tuners and contact
microphones will allow
the students to receive
positive individual feed-
back each class period,
resulting in a higher level
musician,” she continued.
The microphones will
attach to the students in-
struments, so they have
the opportunity to see
what adjustments they
need to make in order to
match the pitch of their
peers around them.

County, daughter of the

Barnes Roberts, she was of

Greer, and Michael Oli-
ver (Beth), of California; a
daughter, Cheryl Wolford,
of Columbia; a sister, Car-

Rest; and six grandchil-

years in the US Army, in-
cluding two tours in Viet-
nam, retiring as a Major.

Arlington, Virginia; three
sons, Leland Robinson/
Bonita, of Hope Mills,
North Carolina, Greg Rob-

STREETSCAPE: Plans to pave downtown lots now underway

“The scope is to repave,
re-stripe and improve
lighting and landscaping
in these lots,” Grant said.
“The timetable is between
April and July.”
Grant gave this update
during his annual report
to Greer City Council last
Tuesday night.
“We cover a wide variety
of important services for
the city, and development
activity levels remain very
high,” Grant said.
“With our upcoming
streetscape project and
the recently announced
hotel and parking garage
downtown, 2018 is shap-
ing up as a banner year for
our city,” he said.

200 paramedics and 190
firefighters will be trained.

on their room-clearing
techniques, but we also
bring everybody together
to do Rescue Task Force

“It does make me sleep
a little bit better at night
knowing that we’re finally
progressing in a positive
way. Just by hosting this
training, we’re very much
ahead of the curve.”
If we’re able to do this re-
funding, it will even fur-
ther strengthen that. We
shouldn’t see hardly any
major increases besides
inflationary type pres-
sures.”
“That would be a good
thing,” added board mem-
ber Perry Williams, “Gen-
erally it’s accepted that
power rates will increase
substantially for most
people over the next few
years. We have some seri-
ous consideration coming
up in October, apparent-
ly, but for this one it’s
non-binding.”

Roebuck man sentenced to 25 years in prison
A Roebuck man received
a 25-year prison sentence
on Monday for his role in a
Boiling Springs home inva-
sion where cash, jewelry,
a video game and a small
amount of marijuana were
stolen.
Jonathan C. Johnson,
25, pleaded guilty to two
counts of armed robbery,
two counts of kidnapping,
two counts of first-de-
gree assault and battery,
possession of a weapon
during a violent crime
and possession of a stolen
weapon.
The home invasion oc-
curred July 28, 2017 at a
Belcher Road home.
The occupant called 911
about 8:40 p.m. and re-
ported that two gun-wield-
ing men were approaching
the front door of their
home. The gunmen kicked
in the front door of their
home and demanded
property.
One of the occupants of
the house sustained a cut
on his head after he was
beaten with a gun. An-
other person was pushed
to the ground. One of the
gunmen fired their weap-
on in close proximity to
the person’s head while
they lay face down on the
floor.
Johnson and his accom-
plice ran from the home
and they were arrested in
the neighborhood a short
time later. Spartanburg
County sheriff’s deputies
recovered the stolen prop-
erty.
One of the victims iden-
tified Johnson as one of
the intruders. The victim
said he used to work with
Johnson.
“It was a scary experi-
ence for the victims and
I’m thankful that nobody
was seriously injured,” So-
licitor Barry Barnette said.
Johnson will serve 85
percent of Circuit Judge
Grace Knie’s prison sen-
tence before he is eligible
for release. He had no pri-
or criminal record.
Multiple charges are still
pending against Kado S.
Bunche, 22, of Moore.

ATTEMPTED MURDER
On March 28 at around
1:30 a.m., Spartanburg
County deputies were dis-
patched to Greer Memo-
rial Hospital in reference
to a stabbing. A male vic-
tim had been transported
there in a private vehicle.
According to police,
he had suffered a knife
wound to his abdomen
that was severe enough
he had to be airlifted to
Greenville Memorial Hos-
pital for surgery. Prior to
being transported, the
victim was able to tell a
deputy that the incident
occurred at 630 Holden
Rd., Inman, and that the
suspect was his girlfriend,
Kathryn Scarlet Trentham,
of 150 Packs Mountain
Ridge Rd., Taylors.
While deputies were re-
sponding to incident loca-
tion, Trentham appeared
at Pelham Medical Center
and informed person-
nel there she was having
homicidal thoughts and
claimed she had stabbed
her boyfriend.

detained her, and trans-
ported her to the Sheriff’s
Office.
While investigators were
interviewing her, other
deputies were at the in-
cident location getting
statements from individu-
als who were present when
the incident occurred.
A violent crimes investi-
gator presented the find-
ings of his investigation
to a magistrate judge, who
approved warrants on
Trentham for attempted
murder and possession of
a weapon during the com-
mission of a violent crime.
She was transport-
ed from the office and
booked into the detention
facility.
The victim was able to
speak with one of our in-
vestigators after his sur-
gery, and all present indi-
cations are he is going to
survive his injury.

week.
The Tigers are now

“We performed really

Morgan Reece posted a
top 20 finish for NGU as
she placed 15th with a to-
tal of 166.
Reece shot an 82 and an
84 in her two days on the

Allison Avery was NGU’s
biggest mover during the
tournament, improving on
her day one total by four
shots.
Avery shot an 86 in
the opening round but
bounced back to shoot an
82 on Tuesday.
Miriam Sundell rounded
out NGU’s scores with a
170 and finish in the top-

Sundell carded an 84
and an 86 in her two days

Nemechek charges to race win

In a race delayed for
two days by a freak snow-
storm in southern Virgin-
ia, John Hunter Nemechek
charged to the front on a
restart with 31 laps left
last Monday and held off
Kyle Benjamin to win the
Alpha Energy Solutions
250 NASCAR Camping
World Truck Series race by
a mere .106 seconds.
The victory was the
first at Martinsville for
Nemechek, who had two
previous runner-up finish-
es at the .526-mile short
track. This time, despite
Benjamin pounding his
rear bumper in the final
corner, Nemechek earned
the grandfather clock tro-
phy that goes to the race
winner.
“I’ve finished second
here multiple times so,
tick, tock – we finally got
a clock,” Nemechek said.
“It’s going to be awesome
to take that thing home.”
Nemechek picked up
his sixth career win in the
Truck Series in his third
start of the season, and he
did it with a skeleton staff
at the race shop owned by
his father, Joe Nemechek.
“I can’t thank everyone
on our staff enough – ev-
eryone who pours their
heart and soul into this
deal,” Nemechek said.
“There’s only four guys in
our shop this year, so it’s
really cool to be able to
come back over here to the

grabbed the top spot on
Lap 220 of 250, he held
it through three subse-
quent cautions. Nemechek
cleared Benjamin after
the final restart on Lap
244, and though Benjamin
closed on the No. 8 Chev-

bumper in the final cor-
ner, he needed a few more
laps to make a concerted
run at the victory.
“We had a really good

runs, and unfortunately, it

“We were particularly
efficient offensively,” Hen-
son said. “We had at least
one hit from everyone
in the order 1-8 and we
did the little things well
that we needed to do. We
had three sacrifice bunts,

Highsmith blasted a big

“I thought we compet-
ed much better at the
plate with several quality
at-bats and were able to
execute in key offensive
situations,” he added. “We
will need to continue to
be consistent at the plate
and execute effective-
ly to compete down the
stretch. Having graduat-
ed seven key players and
having to overcome some
key injuries (leadoff hitter
and starting shortstop,
Breenan Deyo, has been
out since the pre-season
tournament and is looking
to return to the field this
week), our guys have real-
ly proven to be a unified
and gritty group.”
The Tigers will be-
gin tournament play on
Wednesday, taking part in
the Upstate Diamond Clas-
sic at JL Mann.

With matchups against
Blue Ridge and Union still
ahead, Landreth knows
the next two weeks are
important.
“Anything can hap-
pen on any given night,”
he said. “I’ve gotten to
watch both Union and
Blue Ridge play.  They are
both well coached and
will give us all we want. 
We’ve got to play funda-
mentally sound defense
take a couple of days off
to catch our breath, but
are excited about playing
some great competition,”
Henson said. “It is will be
an extremely competitive
tournament and will give
us the tests we need head-
ing into the final week of
region play. We will take
advantage of the tourna-
ment to focus on some
areas of needed improve-
ment and refine other ar-
eas.”
With time ticking away
in the regular season, Hen-
son said its now or never
for the defending region
champs.
“I have always said this
region is so intensely com-
petitive and this season
has proven to be no dif-
ferent,” he said. “With two
weeks left in region play,
there are no undefeated
teams. We are excited
about the opportunity
ahead in these final two
weeks. We play Eastside
next week and Greer the
final week. We still have
a chance to win the region,
and a chance we could
possibly finish the and
miss the playoffs. There’s
a lot left to be determined,
which should make for
some exciting and fun
games down the stretch.
“Our guys have re-
sponded all season and
that’s why we are in the
position we are in down
the stretch,” Henson said.
“It says a lot about our
program and our team to
continue to compete year
in and year out.”
The Tigers are 10-5 over-
all.

late for new tires, fought
his way up to third at
the finish and is third in
points, 31 behind Sauter.

Volunteers work in Greer area during Hope Week

Volunteers are joining
members of Fairview Bap-
tist to complete projects
around the Greer area
during the church’s third
annual Hope Week.
The event, which began
as Nathan Brannon’s se-
nior project at Greer Mid-
dle College, kicked off last
Saturday with the second
annual Egg Drop at Dooley
Field. Projects then started
on Monday.
“I’ve always tried to look
for community service
projects that we can do,”
said Matt Landreth, base-
ball coach at Greer High
School. “Hope Week just
so happens to fall during
our spring break. This
gives us a great opportuni-
ty to give back to the com-
munity.
Landreth brought about
20 varsity and junior
varsity baseball players
to clean up at the Need-
more Community Center
on Monday and to spend
time with the elderly do-
ing Hope in Hospitals on
Tuesday.
“They’re off this week,
so they don’t have any
school work that they
have to do,” Landreth said.
“It teaches them to love
their community too as
much as their community
loves them. It helps them
to give back.
“It gives them a little bit
more ownership to help-
ing others out, putting
others in front of them-
selves.”
Landreth moved to the
Greer area as part of a re-
cent church plant, Table
Community Church.
“We’re getting a little
bit of help from Fairview,
so that’s how we kind of
came about knowing about
Hope Week. I thought,
what a great opportunity,”
Landreth said. “Last year,
that was our first year of
doing Hope Week stuff.”
The teams helped at the
Greer Soup Kitchen and
Greer Relief last year.
“Last year, we helped
out with their garden beds
and cleaning out weeds
and stuff like that, so I
was glad to see that we
were able to help with that
this year,” Landreth said.
“Dealing with baseball,
you’re always cleaning
up; you’re always having
to maintain your field, so
this fits into our cup of
tea.
On Tuesday, Landreth
and his players met at
Fairview for directions to
either a hospital or an el-
derly home, where they
talked with the people
there and heard their sto-
ries.
“We’ll do that, and then
we’ll play on Wednesday,”
he said. “We’re getting
our community service in
on our days off and then
it’s back to doing what we
really know how to do,
which is play baseball.”
On Monday, other vol-
unteers started the Victor
Basketball Camp, which
lasts until Friday.
“I was out of the country
last year when this was go-
ing on,” said Andrew Tate,
senior at Blue Ridge High
School and first-year vol-
unteer. “It’s amazing how
just doing this can build
some good relationships
with people that will last a

Greer native writes book through medical hardship

A local author turned
a hobby into a published
novel after being diag-
nosed with Congestive
Heart Failure.
Wellford’s Kennedy
Brown released her book
That’s It! I Quit! I’m Mov-
ing’ On! through True Glo-
ry Publications a couple of
years ago, marking a high
point in a difficult jour-
ney.
“I decided to find a balm
in the situation,” Brown
said. “I began to remember
how each time I was sick
as a child, I would write
a poem or short story to
pass time, so as an adult, I
decided to fight the pain I
felt with words.”
Diagnosed five years
ago, Brown visited her
mother, who had wrestled
with cancer. Just a few
months after Brown’s di-
agnosis, her grandfather
passed away.
“With so much going on
and so much lost, I decid-
ed to find a balm in the sit-
uation,” Brown said.
“Each time I began to
feel pain,” she said, “I con-
centrated on writing.”
Brown wrote about four
sisters who are “frene-
mies.”
“I enjoyed writing it be-
cause not only was it ther-
apeutic, but it gave me a
chance to somewhat mold
each character after many
of my childhood friends,”
Brown said.
“It kind of gave me a
chance to go back down
memory lane and add a
few laughs, tears, and
just simply remember the
good times,” she said.

of Greer, now resides in
Wellford with her husband
Keith and two of their four
children.
“After losing my grand-
father, in 2012, I decided
that life is too short to
have a void,” Brown said.
As a result, Brown re-
united with her father and
dedicated the book to him.
“I decided that although
we were father and daugh-
ter, we have spent very
little time together when
I was younger, but as an
adult, we have become
close,” Brown said.

achievements in my life,”
she said.
Her book is set in a fic-
tional place in Greer called
Northgate Estates.
“The title of the book
is also of a unique nature
and historical,” Brown
said. “I am a great lover of
history.”
A devoted Sam Cooke
fan, Brown named her
books after his songs’ ti-
tles.
“Although the books are
not based on him or his
life, it is simply my way
of honoring his legacy,”
Brown said.
Brown signed her books
at an event in Greer last
January at the Needmore
Recreation Center.
“My daughter Deirdre
has been very instrumen-
tal on getting each book
organized,” Brown said,
“as I still deal with the
hardships of CHF.”
Keep Movin On is the
sequel to That’s It, I Quit,
I’m Movin’ On, and Ain’t
Noboby’ Business If I Do
introduces four new char-
acters.
“It helped me write
through the pain I en-
dured and continue to
endure from CHF,” Brown
said. “But I am blessed be-
yond words.”
Brown, a 1987 graduate
of Greer High School, has
been married 29 years.
She was born on Novem-
ber 12,1968.
“Writing is so very ther-
apeutic, and it certainly
has been a saving grace,”
Brown said. “It gives me
the strength and courage
to say and know that I do
have CHF; it doesn’t have
me.”
“The book is still sell-
ing very well just as it did
when released,” said her
daughter Deirdre.
“The book is a work of
fiction and quite funny,”
she continued. “They say
laughter is the best med-
icine, and in my mother’s
case, it is true. In short, I
feel such gratitude to the
book; it surely gave my
mother a method of so-
lace.
Brown is also the found-
er of EmmaParaLee Inc.
in honor of her grand-
mothers, Emma Mack and
ParaLee Gregory, and Ma-
rie68 Young Adult Series
in honor of her late best
friend, Marie Nay Dillard.

“Jane” (PG) -- In 1957,
Dr. Louis Leakey sent a
young British secretary
with no scientific degree
or experience out into
the wilds of Africa on an
expedition to understand
chimpanzee behavior.
That young woman was
Jane Goodall. Her goal
was simple: to become
one with the jungle, and
in her stunning success of
pioneering groundbreak-
ing research into animal
behavior and advocat-
ing for animal welfare,
she realized a life-long
dream to truly live with
the animals. Unlike other
documentaries, director
Brett Morgan brings us
intimately into Jane’s
world, walking unworn
paths through the jungle
beside her by accessing
hundreds of hours of
never-before-seen foot-
age from the National
Geographic archives. The
film is narrated by Jane
herself, and it’s mesmer-
izing, fascinating and an
absolute must-watch.
“Insidious: The Last
Key” (R) -- Lin Shaye
returns as the paranormal
investigator Elise in the
fourth installment of the
“Insidious” franchise. In
this iteration, we return to
Elise’s childhood home, a
dark place of terror and
entrapment. The current
resident of the home,
Ted Garza (Kirk Aceve-
do), is experiencing some
high-level haunting, and
calls in Elise to investi-
gate. She takes the job, if
only to right the wrongs
of the past and free her
family from the curse
that has overshadowed
her life. With jump-scare
after jump-scare, it’s not
the worst of its genre. If
you have a real love for
spindly fingered creep-
shows, by all means take
the plunge into the Fur-
ther. But mainly, it’s 103
minutes of treacherous
plot holes.
“Sweet Virginia” (R) --
In this atmospheric crime
drama set in a lonely
Alaska motel named
“Sweet Virginia,” we find
contract killer Elwood
(Christopher Abbott)
awaiting payment for his
latest job. An eccentric
stranger and a few mur-
ders are enough to stir an
isolated town anywhere,
but especially so when the
owner of said motel is a
former rodeo star, played
by Jon Bernthal. Brood-
ing, hushed tones and
character development
are the order of the day.
Imogene Poots supports
as the grieving widow and
love interest.
DOG OF THE WEEK
“Father Figures” (R) -- A
bit of parenting trouble
has stressed-out proc-
tologist Peter (Ed Helms)
wishing he could turn
to his dad for advice, so
his mom (Glenn Close)
reveals that, contrary to
what he’d always been
told, his father might still
be alive -- only she’s not
sure WHO he is. Peter and
his irreverent fraternal
twin Kyle (Owen Wilson)
set off on a mission to
find Pops. The candidates
include NFL legend Terry
Bradshaw (playing him-
self), powder keg J.K. Sim-
mons and more. It should
be a hilarious road trip of
self-discovery that is pop-
ulated with solid comedi-
ans and big personalities,
which sounds like a recipe
for success. It’s not. It’s a
comedy that’s not really
funny, and the poten-
tial to warm the heart is
epically squandered. Hard
pass.

Exhibit features papier maché menagerie

na, will showcase her me-
nagerie of papier maché
animals in the exhibition
“Living Paper Creatures”
at West Main Artists Co-
op in Spartanburg April
3-28, giving the public her
| interpretation of the wild
kingdom–everything from
realistic horses to unreal
creatures of her imagina-
tion.
The free and public re-
ception will be Saturday,
April 14, 5-9 p.m. at the
venue, 578 West Main
Street Spartanburg. The
exhibit can be seen Tues-
day-Saturday, 10 a.m.-4
p.m. at no charge.
The 23-year-old art
teacher will display 21
paper maché sculptures
that will range from real-
istic tigers and zebras to
purposely abstract horses
and creatures of fancy.
Other animals to be seen
include deer, domesticat-
ed and wild canines, birds,
elephants, giraffes, foxes,
sharks, and reptiles. All of
the works will be for sale
from $100 to $500.
Often made of recycled
materials, her work has
been described as “realis-
tic… amazing… and larger
than life.”
All of the creations were
made during the past two
years in the artist’s living
room, when she had time
outside of her art teaching
duties. She hopes people
will “get up close and per-
sonal with” her work and
will experience the “won-
der” of the creative pro-
cess.

“The Skin of Our Teeth”
is a Pulitzer-Prize winning
play by Thornton Wilder,
the American playwright
and author. Wilder also
won Pulitzer Prizes for his
play “Our Town” and nov-
el “The Bridge of San Luis
Rey.”
The play is about the
Antrobus family from the
fictional town of Excelsior,
New Jersey, and is present-
ed as a three-part allegory
about the life of mankind.
It includes many biblical
and classical references,
and the title is based on
the Bible verse Job 19:20,
“My bone cleaveth to my
skin and to my flesh, and
I am escaped with the skin
of my teeth.”
Joining the cast is John
Starnes, who is making
his stage debut at the age
of 75. Starnes graduated
from SMC in the spring
of 2017 with an associate
degree in arts, and is cur-
rently taking more classes
in pursuit of an associate
degree in religion. In “The
Skin of Our Teeth,” he will
play Judge Moses in Act I
and Mr. Tremayne in Act
III.

ing from Chesnee High
School in 2012. She later
received her bachelor’s de-
gree in art education from
USC-Upstate, and she is
currently studying for her
master’s degree through
Xavier University.
“I started drawing when
I was first able to pick up a
pencil,” she said. “I’m cur-
rently the art teacher at
John Taylor Williams Sec-
ondary Montessori School,
and I’m always improving
my craft in all mediums to
teach new and interesting
stuff.”
Her artwork has been
showcased in the annu-
al Artist’s Guild of Spar-
tanburg’s juried shows,
Piedmont Interstate Fair,
USC Upstate galleries, and
Charlotte’s National Arts
Program Juried Show.
In her artist’s statement,

PARALYZED ARTIST HOLDS
ART SHOW AT SMC
Spartanburg Method-
ist College alum Jeremy
Vangsnes will host an art
show along with his fam-
ily in Ellis Hall on SMC’s
campus on Saturday, April
7, from 10 a.m.-noon. Both
events are free and open
to the public.
While attending SMC,
Vangsnes was captain of
the cross-country team,
and was named player of
Shortly after graduating,
with two of his brothers

sponder that was traveling
along the interstate. He
was left with a traumatic
brain injury and almost
full paralysis.
Vangsnes became re-
sponsive a few months
after the incident, partic-
ularly by shaking his left

am a teacher who believes
in knowing every aspect of
what I teach, but my ani-
mals are my best. I hope
to make animals that are
indifferent from their real
counterparts. I love to see

gravitate over and want to
touch them. My goal is to

with Parkinson’s, their

form is anatomically cor-
rect, I can papier mache
the whole piece. I love this
material because it is 100
percent natural and allows
me to mold to every ridge.
This process takes time,
and once I mache a piece,
it has to dry for several
days. Once it is solid, I can
paint. The depth of value
and array of colors I use
help bring the piece to life.
Once all is said and done,
I can look at the piece, as-
sess its personality, and
give it a fitting name.
“Currently, I am mak-
ing heads and smaller full
bodies. I turn out one to
two pieces a month de-
pending on the size. The
large full bodies have to
wait until I have extend-
ed periods of free time.
I also have big plans in
the works. I’m looking to
branch out and try pieces
that hang from the ceiling,
have more action in their
poses, and try puppeteer-
ing. One of my major proj-
ects for summer break is
going to be an old-time
handspring wolf puppet.
I experimented first with
articulation by making a
papier mache marionette
horse. As I make new piec-
es, I retire old ones by
selling them or donating
them.”

DEAR DR. ROACH: I
have worked in a loud
facility for 35 years and
have always worn protec-
tion and had my hearing
tested annually. Several
years ago, I had a thresh-
old shift (a loss in my
hearing range), and the
plant nurse sent me to a
hearing specialist. He said
that my hearing loss is not
due to noise exposure. I
asked how he could tell,
but I didn’t get a satisfac-
tory answer. I later asked
my primary care physi-
cian, and he didn’t know.
How do you determine
from the result of a test
whether hearing loss is
caused by noise exposure
or other factors, such as
illness or injury? Would a
hearing aid be effective?

ANSWER: A compre-
hensive exam and hearing
testing can show whether
the hearing loss is likely
due to loud noise expo-
sure, based on the pattern
of hearing loss across dif-
ferent frequencies. Howev-
er, I don’t think that there
is 100 percent certainty
about making or exclud-
ing noise exposure as the
cause of the hearing loss
from the pattern.
I would think that an
independent evaluation,
by a certified audiologist
and your own ENT doctor,
might give you addition-
al information, including
a discussion about how
much benefit you might
get from a hearing aid. The

DEAR DR. ROACH: My
father suffers from GERD
and takes medication for
it. After returning from
a recent holiday, I asked
him about his symptoms.
He replied that he was not
bothered by heartburn for
the 10 days he was away.
You see, my father takes
all his meals sitting on the
couch, eating off of a low
coffee table. Taking a bite,
sitting back to chew, bend-
ing forward toward the
table, over and over. It al-
most looks like he’s doing
sit-ups while seated, and I
think this must contribute
to stomach acid pushing
up. During the 10 days
that he was away, he was
sitting at a proper-height
table when eating all his
meals.
What are your thoughts?

chanical acid reflux: The
increased pressure from
his bent-over position may
be forcing acid up into his
esophagus.
However, being on hol-
iday may lead to oth-
er reasons he was not
bothered. Maybe he was
avoiding foods that cause
symptoms. Maybe he was
feeling less stressed. It’s
possible he ate earlier and
went to bed a longer time
after eating, which allows
the stomach to empty so
there is less acid at night,
when more damage to the
esophagus can occur due
to the loss of gravity and
swallowing.
Sometimes several life-
style choices are needed
to address GERD. I always
prefer to work on those
before prescribing medi-
cation treatments, espe-
cially because the proton
pump inhibitors like ome-
prazole have long-term
side effects that are best
avoided, if possible.

Online ballots will be

at 8 a.m. Tuesday, April
24, and voters will have
until 8 a.m. on Wednes-
day, April 25, to submit
the ballot. The results
will be published on
