this year has etched an
indelible memory for Sandip Patel,
the owner of the dairy who was hit
by a machete on his skull along with
bruised hands in the attack.
The daylight robbery attempt had
left him with 30 stitches on his head
and bruised face and arms.
Although the pressing need
for keeping his businesses alive
brought him back to work, the deep
psychological fear of being attacked
again at workplace, almost at will of
opportunist offenders, prompted him
to install a heavy metal cage at the
entrance of the shop.
“Prevention is better than cure,”
says the 44-year old brave father
of two.
Sandip in conversation with The
Indian Weekender earlier this week
explained why he chose to construct
the metal cage at the door and how
he thinks it will avert such attacks to
his store.

said.

retailers and scores of community
members gathered in solidarity with
Sandip and protested in Hamilton
demanding to make the law stronger
for the offenders.
The meeting also highlighted the
menace of increasing shoplifting
instances that later snowball into
places liquor bottles. The retailers
appealed the police and smoke
companies to install a cigarette ATMs
or vending machines that operate or
open only when cash or card make
the transaction.
This meeting was also attended by
Labour MP Jamie Strange, Hamilton
East National MP David Bennett,
National List MP for Manukau
East Kanwaljit Bakshi and police
representatives.
The Police representative assured
maximum support possible and asked
the retailers to equip themselves with
smoke cannons, alarms and CCTV
cameras so that such incidents can be
averted.
Police authorities are also
conducting a survey, and soon most
of the stores will be equipped with
a fog cannon, as subsidised by the
government for a mere $250.
Sandip is still recovering from
his injuries, suffers convulsions
occasionally and has trouble using his
left hand. This does not discourage
him from working every day for
seven days a week from morning till
late evening.
At least eight other dairy and liquor
stores are now planning to install
the metal cage to make their store
safer for themselves, their families
and friends.

he spirit of greater connection
among global Indians was
lauded in a recent meeting
of members of different chapters
of Global Organisation of People
of Indian Origin (GOPIO) in New
Zealand.
The dinner meeting held on
Monday, April 02, at the Indian
Accent restaurant in Botany, was
organised to facilitate the visiting
GOPIO Oceania Coordinator Jagdish
Lodhia and celebrate the completion
of 10 years in New Zealand.
The MC of the event was Shefali
Mehta, President, Auckland Central
Chapter, who welcomed guests
and started with a brief overview
of the history of the organisation,
and contributions of several key
members in promoting the messages
and membership of GOPIO in NZ.

Consul of India, Bhav Dhillon, and
Hon. Consul of Fiji, Harish Lodhia
attended the event.

parliament event

he members of Hindu Council
of New Zealand, Wellington
Chapter, were among a group of
representatives from diverse communities
attending an event in Parliament on the
promotion of religious diversity and social
inclusion in NZ.
The Human Rights Commission and the
Religious Diversity Centre had organised a
lunch event at the Parliament on Wednesday,
March 28, to discuss why it was important to
promote social inclusion in NZ.
The event was hosted by Member of
Parliament Adrian Rurawhe MP (Assistant
Speaker) and included a keynote address
by Dr Maureen Sier, Director, Interfaith
Scotland, titled Protecting Religious Freedom
and Diversity: The Role of Government and
Interfaith Organisations in Promoting Social
Inclusion.
The topic of the keynote address set the tone
of the event on why the role of government was
critical in promoting religious tolerance and
social inclusion in modern societies.
Dr Sier discussed her role as Director
of Interfaith Scotland and addressed the
advantages of continued government support
for issues of religious diversity and the potential
benefits for New Zealand in terms of increasing
social inclusion.

Chairwoman of the Religious Diversity Centre
called upon the politicians, policymakers and
the community leaders to have constructive
engagement and dialogues in formulating

The Religious Diversity Centre is a national
centre of educational and research excellence
fostering an appreciation for and understanding
of religious diversity amongst all New

Commissioner, offered closing remarks and
words of thanks.
Ms Devoy reiterated that the voices
of every religious community should
be heard for the promotion of religious
equality and the social cohesion of
diverse Aotearoa.
It was widely agreed among the speakers
and guests that there must be education about
religion in New Zealand, and the Religious
Diversity Centre can play a key role in this
space.
It is important to note that recently a Kiwi-
Indian, and a prominent member of Wellington
Chapter of Hindu Council of NZ, Selva
Ramasami, has been appointed as a Board of
Trustees of the Religious Diversity Centre.

Auckland man loses father

and sister in Fiji floods

to Fiji for a family event
with his wife was left at the
airport stranded as two of his family
members were swept away in the
floods caused by Tropical Cyclone
Josie.
According to reports in the media,
Krishneel Goundar from East
Auckland was travelling with his
wife Pavitra to Nadi for their second
wedding ceremony with his family.
Krishneel married his wife Pavitra
last year and intended to host another
event with the family in Fiji.
Krishneel’s father Veer Goundar
and sister Shinal Mudaliar were
supposed to pick up the couple from
the Nadi International Airport on
Sunday, April 1 but they could not
make it.
As reported on Stuff.co.nz, the
father-daughter duo was travelling
in their car towards the airport when
a flash wave struck their vehicle on
the bridge and pulled them into the
fast-flowing river.
Media reported that Shinal
Mudaliar called her father-in-law
from the car asking for urgent
help as their car was filling with
floodwater rapidly.

The vehicle was later found on the
side of the road with the bodies of
the duo inside. The father-daughter
duo is two of the four people who
died in Tropical Cyclone Josie in
Fiji over the long weekend.
Speaking to a local family
member in Auckland, who chose
to remain anonymous, The Indian
Weekender learned that father Veer
Goundar travelled from Suva to
Nadi to pick his son from the airport.
Krishneel works as a mechanic for
Mag & Turbo in Mount Wellington
in Auckland.
Krishneel called his friend and
employer Brett Horsfall in Auckland
from Nadi airport with the disturbing
news of his family members’ sudden
demise.
“I don’t know what to do,”
Krishneel said to his friend Brett
Shinal Mudaliar and Veer Goundar
in an old photograph
over the call, Stuff reported.
“He was stuck at the airport with
no family around,” Brett said.
“It broke my heart.”
Brett also said that now his friend
Krishneel has to make funeral
arrangements for two members of
his family.
To help him at his distressed
situation Brett offered him leave
with pay and started a Givealittle
page to raise funds for him.
Brett and Krishneel became
friends three years back, and he
moved to Auckland from Palmerston
North in 2017 after accepting a job
at Brett’s Mag & Turbo store in
Mt Wellington.
Brett and his family also attended
Krishneel and his wife Pavitra’s
wedding in Palmerston North earlier
last year.
Brett also mentioned that since
Krishneel’s second ceremony is
cancelled in Fiji, his expense in the
ceremony would not be refunded
and he would need an amount close
to $20,000.
“He’d planned for this with his
wife for such a long time,” Brett
said.
Krishneel’s sister Shinal
Goundar’s funeral was held
on Wednesday and father Veer
Goundar’s funeral is scheduled to be
held on Saturday, April 7.

ne of the Labour-led five years has grown over 10 times. In

wider Auckland region.

significant increase in costs due to
the pro-union employment changes
proposed by the current Government. It
is a no brainer that an increase in costs
will put jobs in danger.

Government worked hard to consult
employers and employees before
formulating legislation that was positive
not just for employers but employees
and the New Zealand economy as well.
During our time in Government we
were able to provide the framework that
encouraged enterprises to hire 245,000
additional Kiwis in jobs in the last two
years alone.

all except small businesses will without
doubt reduce job opportunities for
vulnerable workers.

its ninth annual dance recital in
Christchurch on March 24.
Describing the dance form that
originated in Tamil Nadu making

face and movements of the body to
narrate a story which is graceful,
powerful and compelling; Ms
Ambalavanar said, “Our first item
during the recital was a Ganesha
Sthuthi (prayer to Lord Ganesha)
and Bhoomi Namaskaram (prayer
to Mother earth) by beginner-level
dancers. This was followed by a
vigorous Pushpanjali with eleven
students participating.”
Ms Ambalavanar, who started the
school 13 years back, is originally
from Sri Lanka, and has trained
under Vivek Kinra, Artistic Director
of New Zealand Academy of
Bharatanatyam and Mudra Dance
Company, Wellington.

the initiative on March 29, attended by
Indian students at the University led
by their Vice-Chancellor, Rod Carr,
Christchurch City Councillor Raf
Manji, Community Board member
Shirish Paranjape, and President of
Christchurch Multicultural Council
Surinder Tandon.
“This strategic insight [clever meets
scale] is credit to our VC. Taking this
forward, our focus at UCGIR will be
on encouraging students who have
interest in business, commerce, trade
and enterprises to come together
and interact with businesses around
the globe. Over time, we aim to be
the bridge between New Zealand’s
knowledge and India’s scale of
business operations,” Mr Sharma
said.
Emphasising that such an initiative
is timely and much needed, Mr
Manji added, “Considering that we
have pretty much ignored India till
now as compared to our trade with
China – for reasons nobody knows
– and which is very surprising as the

in praise of Lord Karthikeya (or
Murugan) - the son of Lord Shiva
and Goddess Parvati, and a much
revered deity in South India, by
eight senior students. We concluded
the show with a Mangalam where
the dancers expressed their gratitude
and respect to God, Mother Earth
and the audience,” Ms Ambalavanar
said.

many here. And SMEs will need
some support to make it happen. The
dialogue on this has already started
and you will see some action soon.”

t has been a tragic Easter week on the New
Zealand roads with six deaths says Police,
New Zealand Transport Authority (NZTA)
and ACC in a joint media release today.
“We’ve had another tragic weekend on our
roads,” Assistant Commissioner for Road
Policing Sandra Venables said.
“There have been six deaths from four
crashes this Easter, along with a number of
people seriously injured in other crashes.
NZ Transport Agency Director of Safety and
Environment Harry Wilson said the deaths and
injuries sustained in crashes over the weekend
will affect families and communities for many
years to come.
“Every death and serious injury on our roads
is a tragedy.
These people are not numbers, and we should
never lose sight of the real human loss and
grieving behind the figures.

major changes to New

“Today we are shifting
the focus of the Transport
Policy and releasing
the government draft
policy statement on land
transport,” Ms Ardern
said while releasing the draft in Wellington on
Tuesday, April 3.
The two important takeaways from this
so-called shift in land transport policy are
motorway projects falling out of favour and
fuel taxes going up – a move received with
mixed response.
A fuel tax increase of between 9 and 12
cents a litre has been proposed throughout the
country. This is separate from 10 cents hike
in fuel tax for Aucklanders as proposed by
Auckland Council.

ropical Cyclone Josie has caused severe flooding
in parts of Fiji, with four people reported dead
and one missing.
Fijivillage reported four people were dead, while a
19-year-old man was still missing after he was washed
away by floodwaters. The category one cyclone is
moving southeast, away from Fiji, but heavy rain and
flooding is still affecting the country. The Fiji National
Disaster Management Office tweeted about 9.45am NZT
that water levels were slowly receding, and roads were
starting to reopen.
"Some roads have reopened in flood affected parts in
the Western Division as water levels continue to slowly
recede," it said.
"The FRA is closely monitoring the situation of the
roads and we are urging the public to remain vigilant,
tune into the local radio and listen to the advice of the
emergency services."
The Water Authority of Fiji said on its website that
floodwaters had damaged pipelines and pump stations,
and there had been unplanned power disruptions. The
Fiji Electricity Authority told the Fiji Sun that people
in the Ba district were without power. Power was yet
to be restored to just under half of the customers in the
Sigatoka district , 20 per cent of the customers in the
Nadi district, and 10 per cent of the customers in the
Lautoka district, it said.
Power has been restored to Rakiraki town and its
surrounds using a diesel power station.
The Fiji Electricity Authority is working to restore
power to all affected areas, and recommends the public
stay away from power lines.

iji now has the highest number of women in Parliament in
its democratic history, says Veena Bhatnagar.
She made the remark during the Andhra Convention
2018 Cultural night sponsored by Dakshina India Andhra
Sangam of Fiji at Sila Secondary School in Nausori last week.
She said today, in contrast to past centuries, women are literate,
educated and liberated to lead.
“Women’s roles have expanded from being home makers
to being the force behind the evolution of our societies,” Ms
Bhatnagar said. “We have more women graduating from
tertiary institutions than men and we have more women owning
businesses than yesteryears.
“Women in Fiji are now having better access to justice when
their human rights are violated through domestic violence and
sexual abuse and they are now provided with much better health
care facilities. We have women who have shattered stereotypes
by entering the workforce in sectors previously dominated by
men,” Ms Bhatnagar said. She said women, having toiled under
circumstances of stereotypes for centuries, owe it to themselves
to embrace how they can be effective actors of development
within their homes and society.
“Families need to support the girls within their homes foremost
in making strong minded, progressive and passionate women
who can influence greater positive changes or themselves and
those around them,” Ms Bhatnagar said.
Dakshina India Andhra Sangam of Fiji was incorporated
under the Companies Ordinance of 1913 way back in 1941 by
the late Alpaty Kamma Tataiya. Mr Tataiya was born in Andhra
Pradesh, India.  He came to Fiji on board the M.V. Leonidasin
1890 and served as an indentured labourer. After completing his Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Veena
five-year contract in the indentured labour system, Mr Tataiya Bhatnagar officiated at the Andhra Convention 2018 cultural night at

FNPF assistance

reminding its members that the Natural Disaster
Assistance is for those who were genuinely
affected by Tropical Cyclone Josie.
Since announcing the $1000 flood assistance
for those living in affected areas, FNPF offices
have been inundated with members trying to
access this assistance. The forms are also not
being distributed at any FNPF office, but by
FNPF inspectors who are visiting affected areas.

for members’ understanding and patience.

FNPF offices because the flood assistance forms
are not being given out at any of our branches or

the Commissioner Western’s team and we want
to ensure that these members are provided with
the necessary assistance.”
Mr Koroi said that FNPF’s inspection
schedules were being broadcast through the
media and members should ensure that they
were at home when the teams came around.
The FNPF teams begun inspection rounds in
Ba yesterday and will also be there again today.
The teams are also visiting other areas
surrounding Ba Town. FNPF reiterates that
the $1000 is to provide immediate relief and is
dependent on the member’s General Account
eligibility.
However, members can also access up to
$5000 through the Quick Repairs assistance
under Housing Withdrawals if they need more
funds for repairs.
FNPF is aware of the other areas that were
affected by floodwaters and assures members
that teams will also head to those areas, as well.

Linking solar energy with agriculture in India

he World Economic Forum
annual meeting last month
revealed some startling facts
about India and the world's economy.
The Oxfam survey highlighted
that the richest one per cent in India
accounted for 73 per cent of the wealth
generated in the country, showcasing
the worrying trend of income
inequality. Recommendations to
alleviate this included promotion
of labour-intensive sectors and
investment in agriculture.
On the other hand, India is
aggressively pushing for solar power
with a 100 GW target for 2021-22.
The installed capacity crossed 20
GW in 2017, with 18.4 GW in the
form of ground-mounted projects and
1.6 GW on rooftops. This provides
us with the opportunity to innovate
in terms of systems design and
link solar power to India's labour-
intensive agriculture sector.
The trend in India is the promotion
of large solar parks with capacities
more than 250 MW, at each location,
in bigger states. The official solar
park target has been increased to
40 GW.
Recent tenders for these parks
have driven the tariff down to less
than Rs 2.50/unit, making solar
cheaper than coal. However, rooftop
photovoltaic (RTPV) systems, which
are expected to contribute 40 GW as
well, have still not taken off in India
and need a boost.

over the last few decades, with its
presence now also being felt at the
world level, but when we look at
the per capita real GDP figures,
the country stands far lower on the
economic spectrum compared to the
rest of the world: $1,861.5 at 2010
prices for 2016 (World Bank data).

issues when it comes to identification
and acquisition of land. The common
practice today is to identify land with
low agricultural yields and then lease
them out from farmers for 25-30
years at an annual rate of Rs 20,000-
Rs 30,000/acre.
The problem here is that 40 GW of
solar parks will result in 160,000 to
200,000 acres of land lying unutilised
below the PV panels. Moreover,
farmers will only receive a marginal
increment in their revenue. Is there
a way then, to optimise the usage of
land, whilst increasing the farmers'

is an enclosed space where a variety
of plants can be grown perennially by
controlling the ambient temperature,
humidity, air flow and lighting
conditions.
Polyhouses are a proven concept
in India; enterprising farmers
have reported five-fold increases
exchange rates, the state policies in
action and the management practices
adopted. But an idea which is single-
handedly much more eloquent to
the theme of competitiveness is
productivity.
In its simplest form, productivity
is the value of output per unit of input
used. National competitiveness,
then, is defined as the productivity
of the factors of production (labour,
land and capital) employed during
production processes.
This explanation of productivity
being the most meaningful concept
of competitiveness is sufficient by
itself to demonstrate that there tends
to be more broad and complex forces
at work than ones that have been
traditionally talked about.

Polyhouses with RTPV have
been successfully implemented in
developed countries with colder
climates; PV panels are seamlessly
integrated into the roof structure.
This design allows heat to get
trapped inside the polyhouse, which
contributes to making the internal
conditions favourable for plant
growth.
However, in tropical parts of India,
the typical design of polyhouses is
such that the roof is designed as a
broken dome structure, which allows
better air circulation and ventilation,
and hence control over the ambient
temperature. RTPV systems will
have to be placed over the roof
structure of these polyhouses with an
external integration design.
This means that the supporting
structure of the polyhouses will need
to be made stronger to accommodate
the extra weight of the panels and their
mounts. Agricultural experts claim

through added quality and features.
In the process that is unleashed,
capabilities must be developed to
compete in more advanced segments
as well in entirely newer sections.
Because no nation can be productive
in everything it does, the ideal is to

ASA has inked a deal
with Lockheed Martin
to develop a supersonic
“X-plane” that could break the
sound barrier without a sonic boom,
officials said Tuesday.
The $247.5 million contract
allows for the design, building
and testing of a plane that would
make its first test flight in 2021,
NASA said.
The experimental plane “will
cruise at 55,000 feet at a speed of
about 940 mph and create a sound
about as loud as a car door closing,

instead of a sonic boom,” the US
space agency said in a statement.
As early as mid-2022, NASA
plans to fly the X-plane over certain,
as yet to be determined, US cities to
collect data and gather community
responses.
The goal is to enable quieter
supersonic flight and create “new
commercial cargo and passenger
markets in faster-than-sound air
travel,” NASA said.
Last month, US President Donald
Trump signed a federal budget that
fully funds the project, saying the
new aircraft “would open a new
market for US companies to build
faster commercial airliners, creating
jobs and cutting cross-country flight
times in half”.

people. Forgotten in this throwback
to the past was the strained relations
and conflict that has had some of the
indigenous people threatening to
protest during the Games.

for The Bund.
The Bund is an absolute must for
visitors. The skyline of buildings
stretches out against the Pudong
River. Go for long walk alongside the
bank of the river Pudong and every
few meters you will be surprised.
It’ll no doubt be the highlight
of your time in shanghai. The
extraordinarily futuristic skyscrapers
on the east bank all become more
enchanting adorned in sparkling
coloured lights at night.
A night cruise on the Huangpu
River is highly recommended. It’s
hard to grasp how much a skyline
can actually be lit up – and you could
spend up to an hour just marvelling at
the view. Make sure you don’t forget
your camera!
Cross over the Pudong and go to
Shanghai’s Financial Centre. You
will feel like you’re teleported into
the future; the buildings are glitzy
and modern.
The best way to see this financial
district is from above. We went on
the top of all the tall buildings (time
consuming but all of them show
different views, you don’t want to
miss out) but here are few options
for the best observation deck to see
Pudong from: the Oriental Pearl TV
tower has a few different levels, as
does the Shanghai Financial Centre.
Or, just go to the 87th  floor of the
Financial Centre and enjoy a drink
with spectacular views.

connected via trains, buses, taxis …
Shanghai has lots of temples and we
visited few.
The Longhua Temple is Shanghai’s
famous religious building. Famous
for the Longhua Pagoda, a typical
tiered Chinese temple with ornate
detailing, the square, seven-storey
pagoda, forty-four meters high, is
made of both brick and wood.
The history of the temple spans
back to 242 AD to Song dynasty,
making it Shanghai’s oldest temple
by far. Visitors can climb up the
pagoda, enjoying the detailing on the
inside, and witness a fantastic view
from the top.
The Jade Buddha Temple was
constructed to house two jade Buddha
statues that had been transported
from Burma.
During the 1928 revolution, the
original temple was destroyed but
the Jade Buddha’s were luckily
unscathed. They and other cultural
relics are housed in this elaborate
temple, which is open for visitors
every day. Beautiful Indeed.
If tired, visit Yu Garden – this
is one of the last rural oases in the
middle of Shanghai.
It’s one of the city’s largest green
16th century.
Nowadays, it’s a tranquil space
to walk around and enjoy the flora,
while taking a breather in the middle
of the mad metropolis. Reminds me
of Chinese Garden in Hamilton.
