Create a box around
your single metamaterial element, such as an split ring resonator (SRR). Assign the front and back faces of the box as waveport excitations with vertically oriented E-fields. Assign the top and bottom faces as PEC. Assign the two side faces of the box as PMC. Set the solution frequency as the highest frequency that you wish to simulate. Run HFSS simulation until you hit a reasonable converge criteria. Run frequency sweep over a given frequency range given range using the Fast Sweep. Plot two-port S-parameters.
