BILL TERON – I was saddened last week to hear that Bill Teron, known as

the Father of Kanata, had died. I’ve known Bill since I moved to Kanata in
1968. Bob and I so were taken with the idea of an entire City being planned
as a Garden City in an area where not even a hamlet existed, that we
wanted to make it our home. When Kanata came under control of Campeau
Corporation, we were worried about what would happen so I was asked to
create a Planning Committee and Bill agreed to work with us. He gave a
keynote address at KanPlan, where residents created a list of principles of
development - which I use to this day. He continued to support the
community, more recently doing a great deal to help with issues such as the
proposed development on Teron Road and new development beside the
Varley apartments. Bill was my Honorary Chair for my elections and was a
friend to me for many years. We have lost a true visionary who did much
for Canada and many other countries, as well as giving us such a great place
to call home. We are planning a Celebration of Bill’s life for sometime in
April. Watch this column for details.

NOMINATIONS ARE NOW OPEN FOR THE KANATA NORTH

COMMUNITY RECOGNITION AWARDS – Who do you know that deserves an
award for their service to Kanata North? We are accepting nominations until April 2
for the following awards: Citizen of the Year, Senior of the Year, Youth of the Year,
and Organization of the Year. Nomination forms and details are at
www.mariannewilkinson.com. Recipients must live, work, attend school or
volunteer in the Kanata North Ward. I am very pleased to have Steve Madley as our
MC this year at the Awards Night on April 24, 7 pm in the Mlacak Center.

RETIREMENT – You may have heard that I am not seeking re-election in

the municipal election in October. It has been a great journey for me to
have served Kanata since I moved here, with 29 of those years as your
elected representative. Seeing Kanata develop from its early origin to the
present, as Councillor and Reeve of March Township, the first Mayor of the
City of Kanata and Councillor for Kanata North has given me an opportunity
to be involved in creating a great place in which to live, work and play. I will
continue to represent you until November 30 at which time I will hand over
the reigns to the person you choose as your City Councillor. Thanks to the
many who have sent me their best wishes.
