DURHAM COMMITTEE ON THE AFFAIRS OF BLACK PEOPLE

POLITICAL COMMITTEE

DURHAM COMMITTEE ENDORSES CANDIDATES FOR FEDERAL & STATE OFFICES


Durham, North Carolina, April 7, 2018:

The Political Committee of the Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black People [hereinafter DCABP],
after due Notice to its members, assembled to consider whether to endorse candidates seeking election to
Federal, State and Local Offices. The Political Committee considered the candidates based on the
following criteria:
1. Leadership Experience
2. Reputation as Strategic Planners
3. Commitment to DCABP Core Issues:
a. Educational Equity
b. Criminal Justice Reform
c. Improving Affordable Housing
d. Enforceable Standards for Voting Districts
e. Sensible Gun Control Policies
4. Understanding and Commitment to the DCABP Community
5. Plans to Implement Transformative Programs that embrace DCABP Core Issues and Values
6. Global Understanding of Economics
7. Familiarity with the History of DCABP Community
On the recommendation of the Political Committee, the DCABP Endorses:

b) Hon. Roger Echols, 14th District Attorney i) Sen. Floyd McKissick, Senate District 20
c) Sen. Mike Woodard, Senate District 22 j) Rep. Marcia Morey House District 30
d) Rep. Mary Ann Black, House District 29 k) Zack Hawkins, House District 31
e) Chief Clarence Birkhead, Sheriff l) Mike Lee, Chair, DPS School Board, District 1
f) Matt Sears, DPS School Board, District 3 m) Antonio Jones, DPS School Board, District 4
g) Bettina Umstead, DPS School Board, District 2

The Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black People was established in 1935 as The Durham Committee on
Negro Affairs. Its purpose is to serve as a public forum for discussion of community affairs, and, especially, the
affairs of the Black community. The Durham Committee seeks to arrive at a consensus for the general
improvement of African Americans and their communities.
