Concept Describing characters in a story and explaining how their ac-


tions contribute to the sequence of events.

Objective Students will show that they are able to describe characters in a
story, including how their actions contribute to the sequence of
events, by answering the question "why did the king forget Arte-
mis and what was the result of his forgetfulness?" On a Padlet.

Standards RL.3.3 Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motiva-


tions, or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the
sequence of events.

EL Levels 2 Bridging ELs

Procedures Open:
* Call students to the rug with iPads, ELA textbooks and pencil.
* Introduce students to the new story.
- Tell them we will be reading a Greek myth.
- Ask students students if they have ever heard a Greek
myth. If they have, share with the group. If they have not, give
students examples.
* Remind students that we have been learning about describing
characters in a story.
* Ask students for examples of words that would describe a per-
son.
- Have them share with a partner.

Body:
* Popcorn read the story Atalanta the Huntress as a group.
* After reading first two paragraphs students have underline
characteristics of the king.
- Discuss students answers.
* After reading the second paragraph have students circle why
Artemis sent the boar
- Discuss students answers.
* After reading the third paragraph have students underline ac-
tions of characters.
- Discuss students answers.
* After reading paragraph four circle evidence that provides in-
formation about Atalanta's traits
- Discuss students answers.
* Have students underline the sentences in paragraph 5 and 6
that describe how Atalanta's arrival effects the events that follow
after they have been read.
- Discuss students answers.
* After reading the whole story students circle descriptive words
about the characters.
- Discuss students answers.

Close:
* Tell students that they will be using the app Padlet on their
iPads to answer a question about the story they just read.
* Model citing evidence from the text.
* Tell them that after they answer the question about the story
they will use the depth and complexity icons on the Padlet to
think a little deeper about the story.
* Have the address they will type in the access the Padlet on the
screen.
* Model answering the question on Padlet via the overhead or
Apple TV.
* Send students to their desks to work on their Padlet.
* Teach walks around and assists students.

Modifications/
Adaptions * Model how to answer the question and cite evidence on the
Padlet.
* GATE icon’s give students a chance to dive deeper into the
story and explore new ideas about it.
* Student’s share character traits with one another to remind
each other of the concept.
* Teacher models citing evidence from the text.

Assessment * Assess students by having them answer the question "why did
the king forget Artemis and what was the result of his forgetful-
ness?" on the Padlet. They will then write a sentence that cites
evidence that they used to answer the question.
