2.3 Community Demographics Portfolio Entry

When someone says “appealing to the demographics”, they are talking about the
numbers. The majority, the minority, the number of people, are all demographics, and all
numbers, all statistical data about certain groups and their populations. These statistics and/or
demographics must be evaluated in order to see what is happening in the world, or in this case,
schools. Reviewing this data in schools allow demographics to be seen, how poor an area is,
and what problems there are to resolve. We will be comparing the demographics of student
population, ethnic diversity, gender ratio, and Assisted Lunch Programs between Dublin
Coffman High school, and Dublin Jerome High school (Based on the 2014-2015 year data from
the Us News and World Report).

Populations:
Dublin Coffman High has a student population of 1871, while Jerome has a student population
of 1489. Coffman has about 382 more students than Jerome. Structurally, both schools are
similar in size, being about only a 2000 m2 difference (Area of schools was calculated via Google
Maps Area Calculator Tool).

Reflection:
Since Coffman and Jerome are similar in size, and yet has Coffman has 300+ students, so
overpopulation might become a problem in the near future. If a school is too overpopulated,
meaning there are more students than there is room for, the school can suffer as a result. If a
school is overpopulated, the school might not have the resources available to provide to all the
students in the school, such as: not having enough classroom space for a student to stay in, not
having enough seats for students to sit on, not having enough teachers to properly educate, and
even not having enough food to provide them all. For example, if a teacher has 40 students in
their class, it's simply not possible for that teacher to help every student get what they need.
This overpopulation doesnt let the students get the individual attention they need, and thus
negatively affect their learning.

What schools can do to respond:

If a school is facing the problem of overpopulation, a school district could decide to build a new
School to provide for the incoming students. The Dublin district is actually putting this plan to
fruition, creating a school from a retired Verizon building nearby. This building’s purpose is to
host all of the districts academies, such as the Dublin Teachers Academy, into one facility, so
that the other three high schools do not have to worry about hosting these classes in their
already full rooms. This building spreads the large amount of students into a bigger space,
allowing schools to be not as overpopulated.

Race:
Both Coffman and Jerome’s ethnic diversity are quite similar, with White students being the
majority, with Coffman having 74% of their population being white to Jerome’s 76%. The
second most majority for both is Asian, with Coffman’s population having 14% to Jerome’s 18%.
However, the other demographics shift depending on the school. Coffman has 5% of its
population being black, while Jerome only has 1% of its population being black. Coffman
overall has 26% of its population being a minority, while Jerome has 24% of its population being
a majority. This means that Coffman is slightly more ethnically diverse than Jerome, even if it is
a small degree.

Reflection:
Both high schools are similar in diversity, however Coffman, by a very small margin is more
ethnically diverse. Both schools have white students as their majority. Having large majority of
the schools students being one type of person limits viewpoints and walks of life, because most

of the people there most likely came from the same values and lifestyles. When a school is
more diverse, students can experience other cultures, and thus learn about places and people
other than themselves.

What schools can do to respond:

To respond to this mass division in ethnic diversity, Coffman and Jerome staff can make sure to
include those minority groups into their school activities, along with advertising different
viewpoints to the other students, so that the school can be proud of their differences.

Gender:
Coffman and Jerome’s male to female percentage, via the Us News and World Report, and the
exact same, with the school population being 52% male, and 48% female. In both schools,
There are more males than females.

Reflection:
While having the same percentages of male and male students, the male students both
outnumber the females by 4%. While that 4% is a number that should be payed attention to, a
48% to 52% is not a huge difference between boys and girls. Both Coffman and Jerome has
been successful in making a highschool with nearly an equal ratio of boys to girls.

What schools can do to respond:

To respond to this difference, the staff at both schools should make sure they give both the girls
and boys all the tools they need to succeed. In a place of equal opportunity like a school,
discriminating against gender would only bring the school down, and thus is unacceptable.

Free, and reduced lunch:

Coffman has 9% of its student body use the free lunch program and only 1% use the reduced
lunch program. In comparison, Jerome has a much smaller percentage of the student body use
free or reduced lunch, being 2% for free and 0% for reduced. Coffman has 10% of its students
use an assisted lunch program, while Jerome only has 2% of their students use a assisted lunch
program. Coffman has a higher percentage of their students use an assisted lunch program
than Jerome.

Reflection:
Coffman, having a bigger percentage of their students using the free lunch program, has a
bigger amount of students that need financial aid. From this one can conclude that Jerome is a
wealthier area, and the majority of the students are financially stable. Even then, it is important
to note that both schools have students who are poor enough to need school services. No
matter how small the number, poorer families should not be ignored from care.

What schools can do to respond:

To respond, the school, staff, and students need to be aware that there is poverty in their area,
so that--no matter what percentage they are--their needs are addressed, and they are not left
behind.
