JUNE 29, 2016

PREPARDE BY: MOHAMMAD IMTIAZ
[Company address]
Design Condition:
 Pressure P = 400 psig
 Weld Joint Efficiency E = 1 (As per UW 11 (a) )
 Corrosion Allowance CA = 1/16” = 0.0625”
 Design Temperature = 450˚ F
 Minimum Design Metal Temperature MDMT = -20˚ F
 Size of the pressure vessel = 36” OD X 12’ LG
 Outside Radious R0 = 36”/2 = 18”

Design Calculation

1. Shell Design

 Shell material = SA-516-70

 Maximum Allowable Stress for SA-516-70, S = 20 X 1000 psi = 20,000 psi

We know required thickness for Shell, tr = PR0 / (SE + 0.4P)

= 400 X 18” / (20000X1 + 0.4X 400)

= 0.3571”

We know design thickness td = tr + CA

= 0.3571” + 0.0625”
= 0.4196”

Use Nominal Thickness tn = 7/16” thick plate = 0.4375” (0.4375” > 0.4196”)

Material Callout: SHELL (PLATE): 36” OD X 7/16” THICK X 12” LG SA-516 Gr. 70
2. Head Design

 Head material = SA-516-70

 Maximum Allowable Stress for SA-516-70, S = 20 X 1000 psi = 20,000 psi

We know required thickness for Shell, tr = PD0 / (2SE + 1.8 P)

= 400 X 36” / (2X20000X1 + 1.8X 400)

= 0.3536”

We know design thickness td = tr + CA

= 0.3536” + 0.0625”
= 0.4161”

Try Nominal Thickness tn = 7/16” thick plate = 0.4375”

Check: tn - TA = 0.4161” – 1/16” ( TA = 1/16” for Head ≤ 1”)

= 0.4161” – 0.0625”
= 0.3536”

So 0.3536” < 0.4161 which is too thin

Try Nominal Thickness tn = 1/2” thick plate = 0.5000”

Check: tn - TA = 0.5000” – 1/16” (TA = 1/16” for Head ≤ 1”)

= 0.5000” – 0.0625”
= 0.4375”
So 0.4375” > 0.4161 which is acceptable

Material Callout: HEAD: 36” OD X 1/2” WT 2:1 SE SA-516 Gr. 70 (Min THICKNESS
0.4161”)
