SYLLABUS
WHAT WILL YOU LEARN
-  Concrete as a material
-  Design of reinforced concrete elements

Design: Skill v.s. concept

WHAT DO I EXPECT FROM YOU?
•  To attend the classes
•  To study your lecture notes and book after each
class so that you will be ready for the next class
•  To do your homework as soon as possible; don’t
wait for the deadline
•  To solve extra problems until you are confident that
you understand the material
•  To ask me questions (I have open door policy)
•  Your assignments, reports, and exams must be
legible, well-organized, clear, and easy to follow
•  Bring a calculator to the class
WHY STUDY
CONCRETE?

•  Most widely used material in the world after

water!
•  Has great properties, but also serious
deficiencies
EXAMPLE OF CONCRETE
PROBLEMS
Cost of maintaining existing concrete bridge
decks and substructures exceeds $4 billion per
year.
Why?

• Durability
• Poor material selection
• Poor construction practice
• Cost considerations
• Bad design?
WHAT IS CONCRETE?

A composite consisting of
particles glued together with
cementing material

Portland cement concrete:

concrete utilizing portland
cement as the binding agent
CONCRETE OVER MULTIPLE
LENGTH SCALES
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES
OF USING CONCRETE?
THE ADVANTAGES OF
CONCRETE
•  Availability of constituents of concrete (gravel, crushed
rock, sand, water, and cement)
•  Economy
•  Formability
•  Fire resistance
•  Strong in compression
•  Relatively durable
WHAT ARE THE
DISADVANTAGES OF
CONCRETE?
DISADVANTAGES OF
USING CONCRETE
•  Low tensile strength
•  Brittle
•  Formation of cracks
•  Forms and shoring
•  Low strength per unit weight
•  Time-dependent volume change
•  CO2 emission
CONCRETE ELEMENTS AND
BENDING

Concrete is strong in
compression and weak in
tension

BUILDING CODES AND THE ACI CODE
•  The design and construction of buildings is regulated by
municipal bylaws called building codes. Each city and town
is free to write or adopt its own building code.

•  The American Concrete Institute (ACI) has published the

widely recognized Building Code Requirements for
Structural Concrete (ACI 318-11) and Commentary (ACI
318R-11). These two are referred to as ACI Code

•  ACI code is incorporated into the International Building

Code (IBT) and similar model codes, which are often
adopted by local municipalities

•  Most reinforced concrete buildings in the United States are

designed according to ACI Code
