Introduction.
Nursing is among the growing career in the field of medicine across the globe. The field
has grown and changed drastically for the last two decades. The change has accelerated because
of the importance of nursing practice. The report released by the Institute of medicine discusses
many issues in nursing, but this paper focuses on three areas only. Some of the areas that the
The impact of this report on the primary care is very huge. From the last two decades, we
have realized that the field of nursing is increasingly developing and becoming essential. The
system is becoming integral in the healthcare sector and improving to cater to the demands of the
patients. Apparently, because of the growing population and the need for healthcare need, there
is the need for more nurses in the field. According to the research taken shows that without a
significant number of the nurses in the industry it would be impossible to avoid short service
delivery and untimely deaths of the patients. We have noticed that the field has changed
significantly and advanced to cope with the situation in the health sector (Kelly et al 2014).
The nurses need to make shifts in the mode of care practice to deal with the development.
The changes are also required to cope with the growth and the primary goals set in the report by
the planers. The report shows that the nurses serving in the healthcare sector will acquire high
skills and education that will facilitate service delivery. According to the researchers, by vision
2020 almost eighty percent of the nurses will obtain a degree in nursing to cope with the changes
There is the need for expanding the roles of education and also improved systems. The
improvement need support to provide high support for the patients and also provide quality care.
The quality care creates satisfaction to the patients and therefore motivates the nurses to serve
better in their places of work. The system has improved by offering quality education to the
learners to equip them adequately for the roles they face in the workplace. The nurses have
acquired the education of high caliber such as degrees and diplomas in the institutions of higher
learning. Most of the nurses take four years in colleges and universities to acquire the bachelor's
degree that equips them to serve according to the needs of the patients that they take care.
Additionally, the education gives the nurses confidence to work by offering them the necessary
skills that enable them to perform duties well Billings and Halstead (2015).
According to the IOM report, the nurses viewed as leaders. They are thought to offer
leadership role in the design, implementation of duties and all the evaluation process.
Additionally, advocacy of the reforms will be needed to transform the sector according to the
current trend. The nurses should, therefore, move on with the agenda of advocating on the care
delivery of the entire system to bring changes in the sector Kelly et al 2014). The nurses should
speak the same language that involves policy and find ways of shaping and develop the industry
According to the IOM report, the healthcare providers play challenging roles that lack an
exact solution to tackle correctly. The roles played by these service providers are interdependent
among themselves and therefore requires sacrifice and commitment. The report shows that the
nurses need to work with others with respect and effective collaboration to facilitate service
delivery. The type of the provision of services where the nurses collaborate with others helps in
creating patient satisfaction, fewer errors of medical and improved patient outcome. The report
also shows that transforming the current state of affairs in the hospital is not easy and therefore
Additionally, in the past, the nurses have been viewed by many people to carry duties
delegated by senior physicians. The nurses have been considered to act depending on the
authority of other hospital staff and not make their own decisions independently. To enable the
nurses to become full and efficient health partners, the nurses need some new competencies.
Some of these competencies include patience safety, cost management, patient safety, care
delivery, policy-making and translating the research. The nurses need to be educated sufficiently
Additionally, the report emphasizes the need for mentorship programs of the nurses to
achieve the transformation (Master, 2015).The report states that the education that nurses get
should prepare them to be leaders across all the levels. Both the public and the private health care
decision makers should appoint some nurses in leadership positions to equip them adequately to
