Many individuals have experienced research from the past. In this generation,

some teachers had the initiative to help us conduct and complete our research

requirement. Moreover, completion of this bound thesis would be impossible if without

the help of the individuals who have tirelessly and unconditionally shed sweat, tears and

blood with us. And for that, the researchers would like to thank for their contributions on

helping our research flawlessly.

Dr. Warren K. Uy, Principal, Hua Song College of Iloilo, Inc., for signing the

letters to the school authorities and the permits to conduct the research.

Sir Marc Louie Libo-on, Overall Head English Department and Statistician, for his

time, statistical skills, support and effort in helping us all throughout the research

process, most especially, during the data analysis stage.

Ma’am Evelyn Dominguez, Overall Head, Senior High School, for instilling in us

the value of research ethics and discipline during the conduct of this research.

Ma’am Ann Margaret Genovea, Head of the Senior High School, HSCI – Ledesco

Campus, for her untiring support, assistance and encouragement.

Sir Al Jeffrey Gonzales, our research adviser and editor, for efforts on editing our

research, encouragement, patience and services. Commented [0181]:

Our teachers, for their willingness, initiatives and also being supportive that

without which, we might not have finished and left behind because of difficulties we

experienced while this research.

Abstract

In compliance with Republic Act 10533 or the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013,

Hua Siong College of Iloilo Inc. has begun to offer Science, Technology, Engineering,

and Mathematics (STEM) Strand. Students who aspire to pursue a career in the medical

or healthcare profession are hereby recommended to take this strand as preparatory

course in college. This study, a descriptive-correlational research, aimed to determine

the preferred medical and healthcare course to take in college of the pioneer batch of

senior high school of Hua Siong College of Iloilo, Inc. as well as their reasons for

pursuing a medical or healthcare courses. Predictor variables employed in this study

included sex, age, family income, school campus, and reasons for pursuing medical or

healthcare course while the dependent variable was the choice of taking a medical or

healthcare course. A self-developed survey questionnaire was used to elicit the

necessary information from a total of 37 purposively selected respondents. Respondents

were chosen based from an earlier survey conducted for work immersion, having

expressed their interest to pursue medical and healthcare courses. Frequency count was

employed for the descriptive statistics whereas nonparametric statistics such as Mann-

Whitney U Test, Kruskal-Wallis, and Chi-Square were used to test the null hypotheses

set at 0.05 alpha level. Results reveal that three-quarters of grade 12 STEM students

pursuing medical and healthcare courses come from the Main Campus, the remaining

quarter, coming from Ledesco Campus. The total respondents were composed of 77.8%

female respondents and 22.2% male respondents. When grouped according to age,

respondents were mostly made up of adolescents with 86.1% with young teens and

young adults coming in second and third with 8.3% and 6.6%, respectively. Lastly,

when grouped according to family income, respondents with average family income

come first with 72.2% while those with low income made up 16.7% of the total

respondents, followed by those with high family income, with 11.1%. As for courses, the

most preferred courses among Grade 12 Students is BS in Medical Technology, followed

by BS in Nursing, and BS in Pharmacy. Meanwhile, BS in Physical Therapy and

Radiologic Therapy is least preferred course among Grade 12 STEM students. As for the

reasons, research results revealed that Stable Job and Safe Career Path topped the rank

followed by Aptitude and Interest and Career Path. There is a significant difference in

the choice of courses and reasons of students who are pursuing medical reasons and

courses of students who are pursuing medical and healthcare courses in college when

grouped according to campus. However, when grouped according to sex, age, and

family income, test results revealed that there is no significant difference. In addition,

there is a significant relationship among campus, sex, age and family income. However

the reasons choosing medical and healthcare courses in college are not significantly

related to any of the identified variables.
