COMPUTING IN EDUCATION

NAME: NIKHIL MALIK

CLASS: COE-3 (4 Semester)

ROLL NO: 2016UCO2572

This year NSIT held an international conference “TEAMC” from 26th to 28th March, 2018 where various group
discussions, technical sessions, speeches, panel discussions, paper presentations were held in various fields like
Software Development, Data Management, Machine Learning, Web Intelligence, compuational education.etc.

It is imperative to get along the latest technology in today's world and there is a great need for this by students and
universities. The session on MOOCs was held on the third day of the conference i.e 28/03/2018, Dr. P K Tulsi
presented her research on intelligent MOOCs (massive open online course) and Prof. Rashmi who is from
Nothampton University (U.K) too gave a speech on use of latest gadgets ,technologies and computation in the field
of education. Both of the speakers spoke for about 40 minutes each and indulged in an interactive session with the
students and other teachers present in the room after their presentation.

Dr. P K Tulsi started by explaining the growth of MOOCs around the globe. MOOCs courses are increasing day by day
. Both professors and learners get world-wide exposure, thus improving pedagogical techniques and knowledge
sharing. Around 78 M students and 800+ universities are using 9.4 MOOCs courses. Courses are distributed for each
subject for example science, humanities, social science, business, technology etc. Top MOOC providers are coursera,
edX, Udacity, Future Learn. There is a platform for MOOC- SWAYAM. SWAYAM is a programme initiated by
Government of India and designed to achieve the three cardinal principles of Education Policy- access, equity and
quality. This is done through an indigenous developed IT platform that facilitates hosting of all the courses, taught in
classrooms from 9th class till post-graduation to be accessed by anyone, anywhere at any time. All the courses are
interactive, prepared by the best teachers in the country and are available, free of cost to the residents in India. The
courses hosted on SWAYAM are in 4 quadrants – (1) video lecture, (2) specially prepared reading material that can
be downloaded/printed (3) self-assessment tests through tests and quizzes and (4) an online discussion forum for
clearing the doubts.

Then at last, she presented Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligence. Howard Gardner of Harvard has identified
seven distinct intelligences. According to this theory, “We are all able to know the world through language, logical-
mathematical analysis, spatial representation, musical thinking, the use of the body to solve problems or to make
things, an understanding of ourselves. The learning styles are- Visual-Spatial, Bodily-Kinesthetic, Musical,
Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, Linguistic, Logical-Mathematical.

One of the best part of the presentation was that after the presentation, students were free to raise questions and
clear doubts. Thereafter, a short round of questionnaire was welcomed from faculty and students present in the
conference.

Dr. Pinaki Chakraborty concluded the session with his opinion and short survey covering the staff and students of the
computer engineering department at NSIT.The best paper award was honored to the team from BITS Pilani. Each
paper presenter was given 10 minutes of time to present the whole paper during the session which was followed by
question-answers.

I would like to conclude by saying that it was an enlightening and a kowledgeable conferece that definitely made me
realise the need of computational education in the country and gave me an idea of research papers.
