John Quincy Adams takes office after Monroe.

- Had an incredible resume, he was a genius

- Politically however, he was a mess

o Little personality, and no charisma to garner support for his agenda, didn’t win support

for proposals

- Proposed support for scientific and economic development

o National university, Astronomy, Infrastructure, Expansion

o All to be paid for by a high tariff

- Did little to appease opponents

- Kept opponents in office

- Wanted to remove Indians west of Mississippi river

o They must purchase Indian lands  angered southerners

- Attempted and failed to acquire Texas from Mexico

Southerners angered by “American System”

- American System favored industrial (northern) interests

- Jackson had a lot of support in congress, proposed Tariff of Abominations

o Raised duties on iron, hemp, flax (benefits westerners)

o Lowered tariff on woolen goods (harming northern)

o This embarrassed Adams, lost popular support
