Pre-Lesson: Anticipatory Guide

• Objectives
o Students will be able to develop thoughts and set up a class and individual
consciousness of their understanding prior to reading the text.
o Students should use these questions as a sort of guide on what to focus (themes,
motifs, etc.)
• Materials
o White board and/or paper with at least 10 divisive statements

Plan for Lesson

• Prep:
o Set up classroom if necessary (desks away)
o Go over discussion expectations again
• Accommodations
o If the students are too rowdy, these questions can be made into a worksheet that the
students can work on individually and/or with a partner and then shared with a
group/whole class
o If some students experience problems, statements can be re-worded so they make
better sense, examples can be used
o Statements can be added and removed at any time
o Discussions can be lengthened or shortened if needed
o More complex questions can also be added (black/white to more of a gray)
Pre-Lesson: Agree or Disagree
• Instructions
o Have a statement on the board (ex. I have liked a person before, etc.) that relates to
the story and kind of introduces it.
§ Go over themes, plot points, opinions, etc.
o The students should either raise hands if they agree or move to the agree/disagree side
of the room (depending on rowdiness, energy, etc.)
o Students can explain their opinions/debate, write a short open response to it
• Differences
o Quotes can be used instead so this can become a daily reflection idea
