Lesson Title: Service Learning Projects: Children’s Books for a Cause

Length of Lesson: 2-3 weeks


Unit: The Art of Storytelling (Part 2)

In this lesson… students will create their own children’s book about an
Overview issue they are passionate about with the help of a 2nd grade buudy.

WRITING

Introduction
1. Read the story, Bingboing, that we created, to both 2nd grade and
8th grade students. Explain how we choose our topic and motif
Introduction/Hook in the story. Briefly introduce the idea of them creating their own
story to shed light on a modern-day issue within our community.

Children’s Books for a Cause Project


Instructional ○ Block 1 and 2: 8th graders write stories in class and finish for

○ Block 3: Peer review stories/finalize writing and print out books.
Strategies
○ Block 4: Full meeting to meet 2nd grade partners and to discuss
illustrations.
○ Block 5: Compile story with illustrations and finalize.
○ Block 6: Read the final stories with 2nd grade buddies.

Choose some of the best books to present to a conference of guidance


counselors from throughout VBCPS at Brickell Academy. These books
Closure Activity created by the students will be put on a database for various professionals
in VBCPS to utilize.

Creating the children’s books will be an extra credit/completion grade.
