SAFETY EQUIPMENTS
A. In MAN OVER BOARD

1. The Ring Life Buoy : Use to float a person above the water. Life buoys is
shaped like a tire. This buoy will be thrown into the water, if a passenger
fell into the sea. This buoy must have striking colors for easy recognition.

2. Life rafts are provided as a life saving appliances on every sea going
merchant or passenger vessel in addition to the lifeboats. Life rafts are
much easier to launch as compared to life boats and in case of emergency
situation, evacuation from the ship can be done without manually
launching any of them as the life rafts are designed with auto inflatable
system

3. LIGHT AND SMOKE SIGNAL, Day and night signal attached to 4kg lifebuoy,
used in an emergency to mark the position of man overboard

B. In ABANDON SHIP

1. Life Jacket is used for floating on the sea when an emergency situation
occurs. Jackets helper must also have a striking color so it will be noticed
easily. The jacket should be equipped with a whistle attached to ropes to
draw the attention of rescuers.

2. Lifeboats are used to save people in dangerous situation. Lifeboats in the

form of a small boat are put on the right and left sides of the ship, or rather
in the lifeboat deck. Inside a lifeboat usually prepared some life-support
equipments such as foods, drinks, medicines, and equipments to seek
assistance to other ships

3. SART (Search and rescue transponder) is and extremely vital equipment

on the ship as it performs the job of a signal-man. It is a vital machine
during distress for it helps in locating the position of the veseel in case it
goes off-track
4. Line throwing is used as an innitial connection between the survivor and
rescuers to facilitate approachment, it can also be used for other purpose
necessary. This Line Thrower should be able to throw a rope as far as 230
meters in minimum

5. EPIRB Is a device to alert search and rescue services (SAR) in case of an

emergency out at sea. It is a tracking equipment that transmits a signal on
a specified band to locate a lifeboat, life raft, ship or people in distress

6. Red Parachute signal Handheld flares are used to supply a ‘homing signal’
to help your rescuers pinpoint your position. Depending on your elevation,
handhelds should be visibility up to 5 nautical miles and even more from
the air.

7. Bouyant Smoke Signal Used as an awareness signal whenever a survivor

see a rescue ship

C. In FIRE

1. A fire extinguisher is an active fire protection device used to extinguish or

control small fires, often in emergency situations

2. Fireman outfits is for fire fighting protection. The fire fighter outfit is
stored in the fire control room and in places that are easily accessible
during emergencies.

3. FIRE HYDRANT HOSE BOX A fire hose (or firehose) is a high-

pressure hose that carries water or other fire retardant (such as foam) to a
fire to extinguish it.

4. Smoke detector is a device that senses smoke, typically as an indicator

of fire. Commercial security devices issue a signal to a fire alarm control
panel as part of a fire alarm system
5. Fire Blanket A fire blanket is a safety device designed to extinguish
incipient (starting) fires. It consists of a sheet of a fire retardant material
which is placed over a fire in order to smother it.
