(3) RAINFALL
Moderate rainfall in temperate or cold climates does not constitute an environmental problem. Heavy rainfall
or hail can result in damage to the finish which will help to initiate corrosion.
Tropical rains coupled with hot humid atmosphere have a tendency to accelerate corrosion. Refer to the following
paragraphs on relative humidity and high temperature.
(b) Temperature
High temperature and low humidity are the most desirable conditions because any moisture in the aircraft
is dried out. Similarly, an extremely cold atmosphere is also usually dry. Combinations of high temperature
and high humidity provide the worst environment from the corrosion standpoint.

BOMBARDIER CONTACTS.......................................................................................................................... 53
LEVEL 1 CORROSION
Level 1 Corrosion is one or more of the following:
• Corrosion occurring between successive corrosion inspection tasks that is local and can be reworked
or blended within the allowable limit.
• Local corrosion damage that exceeds the allowable limit but can be attributed to an event not typical
of the operator’s usage of other airplanes in the same fleet (i.e. mercury spill).
• Operator experience has demonstrated only light corrosion between each successive corrosion task
inspection, but latest inspection and cumulative blend-out now exceed allowable limit. If the latest
corrosion inspection task results in rework or blend-out that exceeds the allowable limit, contact
Bombardier Aerospace for disposition by e-mail at: SRPSA@aero.bombardier.com (preferred) or:
LEVEL 2 CORROSION
Level 2 corrosion occurs between any two successive corrosion inspection tasks that requires a single rework
or blend-out that exceeds the allowable limit. A finding of Level 2 corrosion requires repair, reinforcement,
or complete or partial replacement of the applicable structure.
LEVEL 3 CORROSION
Level 3 corrosion occurs during the first subsequent completion of a corrosion inspection task that the operator
determines to be an urgent airworthiness concern.
If Level 3 corrosion is determined at the implementation threshold or at any repeat inspection, it should
be reported. Any corrosion that is more than the maximum acceptable to the design approval holder
NOTE
must be reported in accordance with current regulations. This determination should be conducted
jointly with the design approval holder.

AMM Tasks
Task: 05-51-48-210-801
Model: ALL
Subject: General Visual Inspection After Volcanic Ash Contamination
Benefits: Performing the special inspection procedures/checks will help to protect the aircraft from the effects
of ash contamination.
• Volcanic ash can cause erosion, abrasion, or etching on surfaces; it can also remove finishes, which lets
corrosion occur.
• Volcanic ash will melt when it goes through the combustion chamber of the engines. Volcanic ash causes
engine malfunctions such as: stalls, fluctuating engine parameters, increasing interturbine temperature
(ITT), torching from the exhaust pipe, and flameout.
Task: 05-51-50-210-801
Model: ALL
Subject: Inspection of Aircraft after Contamination with Salt Based Runway De-Icing Products
Benefits: Detect early stage of corrosion.

Final Thoughts
Systematic programs of inspection for corrosion followed by treatment of affected areas need to be part of the
routine aircraft maintenance requirements.
Corrosion is a natural phenomenon which cannot be eliminated. However in most cases the rate of corrosion
attack can be reduced to an acceptable level by controlling, maintaining protective films and sealants that keep
corrosive agents from contacting metallic surfaces.
Cleanliness is of equal importance because, for all practical purposes, a clean dry surface is less susceptible to
corrosion.
Frequent inspections are necessary to ensure that corrosion is detected and treated at the earliest possible stage.
Geographical location causing extreme operating conditions may cause inspection frequency to vary.
Operators should consider revising their maintenance program based on their specific experience and findings.
