Function Implementation in Macro, Micro, and LampSite Base Stations

Among micro base stations, only the BTS3911E supports the Common Clock feature. In
terms of function implementation in multimode base stations, micro base stations have the
following differences from macro and LampSite base stations:
l The BTS3911E does not support the USCU board and therefore the BTS3911E does not
support common BITS reference clocks.
l The BTS3911E does not support common E1/T1 reference clocks.
l The BTS3911E supports common IEEE 1588v2+SyncE reference clocks but does not
support common 1PPS+TOD reference clocks.

Common Clock Feature Parameter Description 2 Overview

2 Overview

With the Common Clock feature, all modes of a multimode base station share a clock source
and require only one set of clock equipment. The Common Clock feature is recommended for
scenarios where multiple modes share software-defined radio (SDR) or CPRI MUX.
The Common Clock feature applies to GU, GL, UL, or GUL dual-mode and GUL triple-mode
base stations in co-BBU scenarios. The Common Clock feature helps reduce operating
expense (OPEX) and capital expenditure (CAPEX).
A multimode base station can be configured with the following common reference clocks:
l GPS reference clock
l BeiDou reference clock
l Building integrated timing supply (BITS) reference clock
l E1/T1 reference clock
l IEEE 1588v2 reference clock
l Synchronous Ethernet reference clock
l 1PPS+TOD reference clock
These reference clocks are described in the following chapters.
Application scenarios of the Common Clock feature include:
l Separate-MPT scenario: Separate-MPT main control boards are used in GSM, UMTS,
and LTE modes.
If all modes in a multimode base station are configured in the same BBU, all modes
exchange data by using the BBU backplane and share a clock source. If the modes of a
multimode base station are configured in two different BBUs, the BBU Interconnection
feature must be enabled.
The following restrictions apply to this scenario:
– A multimode base station does not support the AUTO(Auto Handover) clock
working mode. Each mode in a multimode base station can be configured with only
one clock source.
– A multimode base station can be configured with only one USCU board and the
USCU board can be configured with only one clock source.
– If the LTE TDD or LTE FDD mode is used in a multimode base station, the shared
clock source must support and use time synchronization.

Common Clock Feature Parameter Description 2 Overview

– If the UMTS or LTE mode needs to use time synchronization in a separate-MPT

multimode base station where the GSM mode uses the GTMU as the main control
board and these modes share SDR or CPRI MUX, the GSM mode must also use
time synchronization. In addition, the clock source of the GSM mode must support
time synchronization or be reconstructed to support time synchronization.
– In the inter-subrack SDR scenario, it is not allowed to configure frequency
synchronization for the mode in the primary BBU and time synchronization for the
mode in the secondary BBU at the same time.
l Co-MPT scenario: The GSM, UMTS, and LTE modes share a main control board, such
as the UMPT board.
A co-MPT base station uses the shared main control board to provide a clock source for
each mode and supports the Common Clock feature. The clock source provided by the
UMPT board supports frequency synchronization and time synchronization. If the LTE
TDD mode is used, the clock source of the co-MPT board must support and use time
synchronization.
NOTE

The LTE FDD and LTE TDD separate-MPT mode is not supported.
l Hybrid-MPT scenario: Separate-MPT and co-MPT modes coexist.
In a hybrid-MPT base station, a certain mode uses a separate main control board, and
other modes share a main control board.
– The main control board shared by different modes supports the Common Clock
feature. The clock source provided by the main control board supports frequency
synchronization and time synchronization. If the LTE TDD mode is used, the clock
source of the co-MPT board must support and use time synchronization.
– The modes that use separate main control boards share a clock source with the
modes that use the shared main control board. The restrictions in this scenario are
the same as those in the separate-MPT scenario.
NOTE

To achieve BBU interconnection, you can connect one UCIU board to one UMPT board or connect two
UMPT boards. The two methods use the same configurations. This document uses one method as an
example to describe the BBU interconnection. A BBU3910A cannot be interconnected with another
BBU. The BTS3911E does not support BBU interconnection.
In separate-MPT GL SDR scenarios or co-MPT GL scenarios, GSM and LTE use a common reference
clock. When the GBTS/eGBTS uses time synchronization, the GBTS/eGBTS frame number (FN) is
aligned with that of the time synchronization source. When the GSM mode does not need to support
GBTS/eGBTS inter-site frame number synchronization, the
BTSCLK.FRAMESYNCSW(BSC6900,BSC6910) or TASM.GSMFRAMESYNCSW parameter is set
to OFF(Off). When the GSM mode needs to support GBTS/eGBTS inter-site frame number
synchronization, the BTSCLK.FRAMESYNCSW(BSC6900,BSC6910) or
TASM.GSMFRAMESYNCSW parameter is set to ON(On). Before the
BTSCLK.FRAMESYNCSW(BSC6900,BSC6910) or TASM.GSMFRAMESYNCSW parameter is set
to ON(On), FN offset and training sequence code (TSC) must be planned to avoid interference between
neighboring GSM cells. For details about GBTS/eGBTS inter-site frame number synchronization, see
Synchronization Feature Parameter Description for GBSS.

Common Clock Feature Parameter Description 3 Common GPS/BeiDou Reference Clock

3 Common GPS/BeiDou Reference Clock

Both BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) and GPS navigation system belong to
satellite navigation systems, so a BeiDou reference clock has the same working principles and
networking schemes as those of a GPS reference clock.
A BeiDou reference clock is different from a GPS reference clock in the configuration and
hardware aspects as follows:
l In terms of configuration, the working mode must be set to BeiDou for a BeiDou
reference clock.
l In terms of hardware, only the UMPTb6 and UMPTe3 support BeiDou clock
synchronization.
This chapter describes the network schemes for a common GPS/BeiDou reference clock in
separate-MPT, co-MPT, and hybrid-MPT multimode base stations. The following uses the
common GPS reference clock as an example.

BBU Interconnection Scenario

The following uses the BBU interconnection achieved by connecting one UCIU board and
one UMPT board as an example to describe the principle of the GPS reference clock sharing
in a separate-MPT multimode base station.
l As shown in Figure 3-4, the GPS clock is located in the primary BBU of a separate-
MPT multimode base station. Both the LMPT/UMPT_L and the USCU boards in the
secondary BBU can receive GPS clock signals. In the first case, the LMPT/UMPT_L
board in the primary BBU receives GPS clock signals and forwards them to the GTMU
and UCIU through the backplane. The UCIU board then sends the clock signals to the
UMPT_U board in the secondary BBU through the BBU interconnection port. In the
second case, the USCU board in the primary BBU receives GPS clock signals and
forwards them to the GTMU and UMPT_L boards through the backplane. Upon
receiving the clock signals, the GTMU board forwards them to the UCIU board in the
primary BBU. The UCIU board then sends the clock signals to the UMPT_U board in
the secondary BBU through the BBU interconnection port.
l As shown in Figure 3-5, the GPS clock is located in the secondary BBU of a separate-
MPT multimode base station. Both the UMPT and the USCU boards can receive GPS
clock signals. In the first case, the UMPT_L board in the secondary BBU receives GPS
clock signals and sends them through its BBU interconnection port to the UCIU board in
the primary BBU. This UCIU board then sends the clock signals to the GTMU and
WMPT/UMPT_U boards in the primary BBU through the backplane. In the second case,
the USCU board in the secondary BBU receives GPS clock signals and forwards them to
the UMPT_L board through the backplane, which in turn sends them through its BBU
interconnection port to the UCIU board in the primary BBU. This UCIU board then
sends the clock signals to the GTMU and WMPT/UMPT_U boards in the primary BBU
through the backplane.

Common Clock Feature Parameter Description 4 Common BITS Reference Clock

4 Common BITS Reference Clock

This chapter describes the common BITS reference clock in separate-MPT, co-MPT, and
hybrid-MPT multimode base stations. The BITS reference clock only supports frequency
synchronization, and does not support time synchronization. In this chapter, "LTE" refers to
both LTE FDD and LTE NB-IoT, and "eNodeB" refers to both FDD eNodeB and NB-IoT
eNodeB.
When the common BITS reference clock is used, a USCU board must be configured in the
BBU.
The BBU3910A integrates the functions of main control, transmission, and baseband
processing all into one module and thereby does not support the configuration of the USCU
board. Therefore, the BBU3910A does not support the common BITS reference clock.
The BTS3911E does not support the USCU board and therefore the BTS3911E does not

l Currently, only FDD and TDD eNodeBs support the 1588v2 ATR clock. All of GSM,

Deployment Scenario Description

Common 1588v2 reference When the Abis and Iub interfaces use IP transmission and
clock over the Iub interface the NodeB of a multimode base station is configured with a
1588v2 clock source, the eGBTS/GBTS can obtain clock

using the BBU backplane.

Common 1588v2 reference When the Abis or Iub interface and the S1 interface use the
clock over the S1 interface IP transmission and the eNodeB of a multimode base station
is configured with a 1588v2 clock source, the GBTS,
eGBTS, or NodeB can obtain clock signals from the LMPT
or UMPT board in the eNodeB by using the BBU
backplane.

Common IEEE 1588v2 When the eGBTS or GBTS of a multimode base station is
reference clock over the configured with a 1588v2 clock source, the NodeB or
Abis interface eNodeB can obtain clock signals from the GTMUb or
GTMUc board in the GBTS or the UMPT_G board in the
eGBTS by using the BBU backplane.

If a common 1588v2 reference clock is used in co-transmission scenarios, the 1588v2 clock
source must be configured on the mode that provides the co-transmission port and the mode
that does not provide the co-transmission port shares the clock source provided by the peer
mode.

When a mode is configured with a common 1588v2 reference clock that uses the backup
synchronization method of time synchronization and frequency synchronization, the mode can
only provide the time synchronization signals to the peer mode. If the clock source providing
time synchronization signals is faulty:
l The mode switches to the clock source providing frequency synchronization signals.
l The peer mode enters the clock holding mode. 90 days later, the clock on the peer mode
will be unavailable.

This chapter describes the common 1588v2 reference clock in separate-MPT, co-MPT, and
hybrid-MPT multimode base stations. The following sections use the IEEE 1588v2 clock as
an example to describe the Common Clock feature because the IEEE 1588v2, 1588v2 ATR,

6.1 Common IEEE 1588v2 Reference Clock in Separate-

MPT Multimode Base Stations
When the IEEE 1588v2 reference clock is used as a frequency synchronization source, LTE
TDD uses time synchronization and shares the IEEE 1588v2 reference clock to other modes,
whereas other modes cannot share the IEEE 1588v2 reference clock to LTE TDD. This is
because LTE TDD supports only time synchronization, but the IEEE 1588v2 reference clock
shared by other modes to LTE TDD can use only frequency synchronization.
When the IEEE 1588v2 reference clock is used as a time synchronization source:
l The GSM, LTE FDD, LTE NB-IoT, and LTE TDD modes can share their time
synchronization source to other modes.
l The UMTS mode can share the time synchronization source to other modes if the UMPT
board is used to obtain the IEEE 1588v2 clock source.
NOTE

Generally, the NodeB does not require time synchronization. In the preceding case, the UMTS
mode supports the IEEE 1588v2 clock source for the sake of sharing the time synchronization
source to other modes.
l The UMTS mode cannot share the time synchronization source to other modes if the
WMPT//UTRP2/UTRP9 board is used to obtain the IEEE 1588v2 clock source.

Single BBU Scenario

As shown in Figure 6-1, Figure 6-2, and Figure 6-3, one main control board serving a mode
is connected to the transport network using an FE/GE port. The board is configured with an
IEEE 1588v2 clock client to obtain clock signals from an IEEE 1588v2 clock server. The
oscillator in the board synchronizes clock signals with the IEEE 1588v2 clock server and
transmits the synchronized 1 pulse per second (PPS) clock signals to the other main control
board serving another mode. In this case, only one IEEE 1588v2 clock client is required. FE
stands for fast Ethernet and GE stands for Gigabit Ethernet.

Separate-MPT Multimode Base Stations
Single BBU Scenario
As shown in Figure 7-1, Figure 7-2, and Figure 7-3, to implement a common synchronous
Ethernet reference clock, one mode of a dual-mode base station must connect to the transport
network over its FE/GE port and the IP network must support Ethernet clock synchronization.
This ensures that the other mode of the base station can receive synchronous Ethernet clock
signals by using the BBU backplane.

reference clocks, the following common reference clocks can be used:
l Common 1PPS+TOD reference clock
l Common IEEE 1588v2+SyncE reference clock
The common 1PPS+TOD reference clock can be shared by two or all of the GSM, UMTS,
and LTE modes when the modes are deployed on the same UMPT board because the common
1PPS+TOD reference clock is often supported only by a single mode in a separate-MPT
multimode base station.

11 Engineering Guidelines

11.1 When to Use

It is recommended that the Multi-mode BS Common Reference Clock feature be enabled for a
multimode base station to reduce the OPEX and CAPEX.

11.2 Required Information

The information to be collected is as follows:
l Whether the multimode base station involving the LTE TDD mode is configured with a
GPS/BeiDou antenna
If the multimode base station is configured with a GPS/BeiDou antenna, it is
recommended that all modes of the base station share a GPS/BeiDou reference clock.
l Transmission scheme used by the multimode base station that does not involve the LTE
TDD mode
– If at least one mode of the multimode base station uses E1/T1 transmission, use a
common E1/T1 reference clock.
– If all modes of the multimode base station use FE/GE transmission, check whether
synchronous Ethernet is supported. If synchronous Ethernet is supported, use a
common synchronous Ethernet reference clock. If synchronous Ethernet is not
supported, use a common IEEE 1588v2 reference clock.

11.3 Requirements
Other Features
The prerequisite features listed in 9 Related Features must be activated.

Hardware
If a BITS reference clock is used, a USCU board must be installed in the BBU.
If a GPS reference clock is used, a USCU or UMPT board must be installed in the BBU.

SingleRAN
Common Clock Feature Parameter Description 11 Engineering Guidelines

If a BeiDou reference clock is used, a UMPTb6 or UMPTe3 must be installed in the BBU.

If an IEEE 1588v2+SyncE reference clock is used, the main control board that provides the
clock source must be a UMPT board.

When a USCU board is shared by multiple modes, only one mode can have its clock
synchronization mode set to time synchronization at a time.

If a GBTS uses a GTMUa board as the main control board, the GBTS cannot share the
following reference clock with other modes:
l GPS reference clock
l 1588v2 reference clock

License
This feature is a basic feature and requires no license.

Other Requirements
Requirements for LTE TDD are as follows:
l A GBTS can share only the GPS reference clock to an eNodeB TDD and the GBTS must
use time synchronization in this scenario.
l An eGBTS/NodeB/co-MPT base station can share only the GPS or BeiDou reference
clock to an eNodeB TDD and the eGBTS/NodeB/co-MPT base station must use time
synchronization in this scenario.
l If a multimode base station involves LTE TDD, a clock source that supports time
synchronization must be used, for example, GPS reference clock, BeiDou reference
clock, IEEE 1588v2 reference clock, 1PPS+TOD reference clock, or IEEE
1588v2+SyncE reference clock. In addition, the clock source must use time
synchronization.

11.4 Precautions
Note the following points if the GPS, BeiDou, or IEEE 1588v2 reference clock is used when a
GBTS or eGBTS shares its reference clock to a NodeB or eNodeB or shares the reference
clock provided by a NodeB or eNodeB:
l When the GBTS uses time synchronization:
– If the GBTS does not require inter-site frame number synchronization, set the
BTSCLK.FRAMESYNCSW(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter to OFF(Off).
– If the GBTS requires inter-site frame number synchronization, set the
BTSCLK.FRAMESYNCSW(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter to ON(On). Before
this setting, FN offset and TSC must be planned for GSM to avoid interference
between neighboring GSM cells.
l When the eGBTS uses time synchronization:
– If the eGBTS does not require inter-site frame number synchronization, run the
SET CLKSYNCMODE command with the TASM.GSMFRAMESYNCSW
parameter set to OFF(Off).
– If the eGBTS requires inter-site frame number synchronization, run the SET
CLKSYNCMODE command with the TASM.GSMFRAMESYNCSW parameter

set to ON(On). Before this setting, FN offset and TSC must be planned for GSM to
avoid interference between neighboring GSM cells.
l When a co-MPT base station involves the GSM mode and the GSM mode uses time
synchronization:
– If the GSM mode does not require inter-site frame number synchronization, run the
SET CLKSYNCMODE command with TASM.GSMFRAMESYNCSW set to
OFF(Off).
– If the GSM mode requires inter-site frame number synchronization, run the SET
CLKSYNCMODE command with GSMFRAMESYNCSW set to ON. Before this
setting, FN offset and TSC must be planned for GSM to avoid interference between
neighboring GSM cells.

11.5 Initial Configuration

This document provides system clock configuration for each of the NEs that share a clock
source and their common reference clock configuration. For details about how to configure
the clock source of the NE that provides the common reference clock, see Synchronization
Feature Parameter Description for the corresponding mode. This section describes how to
configure a common clock in typical application scenarios.

11.5.1 Separate-MPT Base Station Providing Clock Source

A separate-MPT base station can share the following reference clocks among its supported
modes: GPS, BeiDou, BITS, E1/T1, IEEE 1588v2, synchronous Ethernet, and IEEE
1588v2+SyncE.
When an eGBTS, NodeB, eNodeB, or co-MPT base station provides the clock source, they
have the same data configuration of the clock source (including the GPS, BeiDou, BITS,
E1/T1, IEEE 1588v2, synchronous Ethernet, and IEEE 1588 V2+SyncE reference clock). The
GBTS does not support the BeiDou or IEEE 1588v2+SyncE reference clock because its main
control board cannot be the UMPT. In addition, the configuration of the clock source
(including the GPS, BITS, E1/T1, IEEE 1588v2, and synchronous Ethernet reference clock)
for a GBTS must be performed on the BSC. Therefore, the clock source data configuration for
a GBTS is different from that for an eGBTS, NodeB, eNodeB, or co-MPT base station. For
details, see 11.5.1.2 GBTS Providing Clock Source.

11.7 Possible Issues

If a reference clock type conflict occurs on an eGBTS, NodeB, or eNodeB, ALM-26276 Inter-
System Site-Level Configuration Conflict will be reported. That is, the base station of the
current mode does not support this type of reference clock or the clock synchronization modes
do not match between the local and peer ends. In this case, check the configuration file and
correct the reference clock type or clock synchronization mode.

Alarm ID Alarm Name

26276 Inter-System Site-Level Configuration Conflict

If a GBTS does not support the reference clock provided by the peer mode, ALM-26260
System Clock Failure will be reported on the BSC.

If the common reference clock is correctly configured but the base station cannot lock the
clock source within 30 minutes after the base station starts, rectify the common reference
clock fault. For details, see "Possible Issues" in Synchronization Feature Parameter
Description for GSM, UMTS, or LTE.

ClkTyp BSC690 SET GBFD-1 Synchro Meaning:

e 0 BTSCL 18202 nous Clock mode of the BTS.
K Ethernet
If this parameter is set to INT_CLK, the BTS does not
track any external clock. The internal high precision
clock works in free-run mode.
If this parameter is set to TRCBSC_CLK, the BTS
tracks the clock signals received from the BSC.
If this parameter is set to EXTSYN_CLK, the BTS
tracks the clock signals received from the external
input clock.
If this parameter is set to IP_TIME, the BTS shakes
hands through the IP network with the IP clock server
for synchronization.
If this parameter is set to IP_TRANSFER, the BTS
extracts the clock from an E1 when there is not an IP
clock after the BTS upgrades the transmission mode
from E1 transmission to IP Over FE transmission.
If this parameter is set to TRCGPS_CLK, the BTS
extracts the synchronization clock from the GPS using
the DGPS or USCU.
If this parameter is set to UM_CLK, the BTS keeps
pace with the signals broadcast on the downlink main
BCCH of a neighboring BTS.
If this parameter is set to PEER_CLK, the multimode
BTS(GSM) keeps pace with the signals that the other
mode offer.
If this parameter is set to SYNETH_CLK, the
multimode BTS(GSM) keeps pace with the SynEth
Clock.
If this parameter is set to
TOD_CLK_RESERVED(TOD Clock), the BTS tracks
the clock signals received from the time of day (TOD)
link.
If the BTS does not support the clock source type
specified by "ClkType", the value of "ClkType"
cannot take effect on the BTS. As a result, the
initialization fails after the BTS resets.
GUI Value Range: INT_CLK(Internal Clock),
TRCBSC_CLK(Trace BSC Clock),
EXTSYN_CLK(External Sync clock), IP_TIME(IP
Clock), IP_TRANSFER(Trace Transport Clock),
TRCGPS_CLK(Trace GPS Clock), UM_CLK(Um
