 A Look Back at our Q1 Meeting
2018 Legal Update | Stokes Wagner

The new year is always a busy time for HR professionals grappling with new laws and 2018 was an
especially busy year. HHRA hosted Jacqueline Godoy and Peter Maretz from Stokes Wagner, an
employment law firm specializing in the hospitality industry, to review the effects of new legislation
and the #MeToo movement. In an hour and thirty minutes, Ms. Godoy and Mr. Maretz touched on
how employers should prepare for prohibitions on salary and criminal background inquiries in the
interview process, expanded coverage of the existing parent leave act, new topics to be added to
mandatory harassment training, and employers’ legally-mandated responsibilities in responding to
federal immigration enforcement agencies—and that was just California! The presentation also
covered changes in policies and rules by Department of Labor and implications of rulings from Grubhub
vs. ADA resulting in increased litigation around the accessibility of websites. Ms. Godoy and Mr. Maretz
also addressed the issues that employers may be facing with the media surrounding the #MeToo
movement and Times Up. Ms. Godoy and Mr. Maretz’s presentation was engaging and interactive,
with HHRA members feeling free to ask questions during their presentation and clarify points. Not
included in the official presentation but one of those topics that came up in discussion was best
practices for handbooks to promote a positive, engaged culture. This presentation and all quarterly
meetings of the San Diego HHRA are free to members.

A lovely reminder of how beautiful
change can truly be.”

Isn’t that the truth!?! Sometimes we avoid change at all costs, but when we think
about spring, we are reminded that change is something to look forward to! If
that’s the case, why is it that so many of us dread change? We could be in the
middle of a cold, dark, miserable winter and yet we find comfort in our misery and
lean into the darkness rather than looking toward change. Maybe we’re not
miserable, but we have just become too comfortable and are resistant to a new
season. I think it’s time to challenge one another to breakthrough into spring and
embrace change!! Are you with me?
