IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF TONDANO RIVER BANKS AREA IN THE URBAN

DESIGN CONTEXT

ABSTRACT : Unregulated river basins can cause many problems. The large number of dense settlements around the
river basin Tondano especially around the settlements of Ternate Tanjung and Ternate Baru caused narrowing of the
watershed which resulted in flood disaster when the rain in the area. In addition, due to the expansion of slum
settlements on the location of this river bank cause degrade the visual aesthetic quality of Tondano watershed area,
especially those around the settlement of the house in Ternate Tanjung and Ternate baru. The purpose of this study is to
analyze the condition of river banks, especially around slum settlements Ternate Tanjung and Ternate Baru, and will
produce the concept of structuring the river banks. The method used is qualitative-descriptive method. Data were
collected through field surveys, observations and interviews. The location of the research is located in Ternate Baru and
Ternate baru located on the banks of the Tondano watershed. Furthermore, analysis of the density of buildings in the
settlement, spatial analysis of spatial use, analysis of flood affected areas, and aesthetic elements analysis of residential
and river basin areas, and analysis of outer space design on riverbanks. The expected result of this research is improving
the aesthetic quality of settlement around Tondano river bank, restoring the function of river banks as open space and
public safety around the settlement.
