Duke of Edinburgh Practice Expedition, 13/14 June 2010

Armed with a map and compass and carrying rucksacks fully packed with
tent, sleeping bag, cooking equipment, food and clothes, 29 students in
years 9 and 10 set off on their practice expedition for the Duke of Edinburgh's
Award. In groups, they walked in the Surrey Hills, where they learnt
navigational skills and soon came to realise the importance of packing light
and being fit. Plenty of wildlife was encountered along the way, especially
rabbits and even a snake. At the campsite they worked out how to put up
their tents, learnt about cooking on a trangia and took responsiblility for
making their own meals.

Students‟ thoughts on the practice expedition:

“It was a good way to learn skills outside of the classroom” (Lottie Moss)
“I thought it was a new experience that gives you important life skills”
(Michael Garn) “It‟s fulfilling to finish the training expedition, although it was
very tiring” (Jonathan Hill)
“When we finished it was good to have a sense of achievement” (Sarah
Jackson).

They will be carrying out the assessed expedition on Sunday 18th and Monday
19th July. Good luck to the students involved, and thanks to Sarah Brown,
Barry Donovan and Ruth Scott for helping to make the trip successful.

Humanities Week 21st -25th June

Humanities week was a week of alternative learning to support our

Humanities status and to educate the students as „global citizens‟ and bring
the outside world into the classroom. It gave students the opportunity to work
with groups that they may not have ever worked with, to go to places they
may not have ever visited, to experience new activities, to develop different
relationships and skills, to boost their confidence and to ultimately make a
positive contribution to society.

Students had a variety of 32 activities to choose from, some were for 1, 2 or 3

days, and the trip to the Battlefields in France and the French exchange were
for the whole week.

Sports Day- Monday, 21st June

Humanities Week started with Sports day at St Mary‟s College in Twickenham.

Students competed in track events while their peers cheered them on. The
weather was great and students and staff enjoyed their day at the
professional track.

Track events ranged from 100 meters to 1500 meters and finished with the
ever popular relay races.

This year the PTA funded the gold medals and ribbons awarded to the
winning students.

Great fun!
Sponsored Walk – Walking for Emlyn- Tuesday, 22nd June

Following last years success, students and staff enjoyed a long walk around
Richmond Park on a sponsored walk.

Some teachers and students also ran the 8 mile course, (including the Head
Teacher, Richard Burke) and the first across the winning line was Connor
Patterson in year 8. Well done!

The weather was fine and the students were rewarded with an ice lolly
funded by the PTA.

The proceeds will go to the Emlyn Wibberley memorial fund this year.

Other Humanities Week activities included:

Actor for a day

This was a 2 day drama mini workshop based on Roald Dahl‟s plays. Students
used the Knee High Theatre Company as their inspiration, combining
naturalistic theatre with circus skills and tricks, culminating in a performance
which was great fun and very amusing.

The group also went to see Georges Marvellous Medicine at Richmond

Theatre.

Bollywood

This was a 1 day activity based on the genre of the Bollywood films. A
specialist Bollywood dancer came into school and did a workshop with the
students.

Brighton

A coach took students and staff to Brighton for the day. They enjoyed the
beach and the Pier amusements. A very relaxed day out.

Kew Gardens

Staff were a little apprehensive about taking a group of boys to discover the
wonders of the Royal Botanical Gardens; however, the day was a great
success starting with an ice cream on arrival and thanks to the discovery of
the Tree Top Walkway and the badgers set. The boys explored the gardens
and enjoyed a fun day out.

Cadbury World

Staff took students to Birmingham to Cadbury World for the day. Students
learnt how to make chocolate and on their return to school did a workshop
and made their own chocolate, designed and made the packaging too.
Christ’s United

Students enjoyed a day in the sun playing a competitive 5 a-side football

tournament before settling down to watch an exciting World cup match
between Paraguay and Italy.

Come Dine with Me

Students were given £5 to buy ingredients to make a 2 course meal. They had
to first research their menus and then cook their meals. Tasting was
encouraged and everyone went home full! There was no waste as left over
ingredients went to a homeless shelter in Hanwell.

Crafty Fun

Students‟ creativity was unleashed! They made jewellery in the form of

bracelets, necklaces and earrings.

Eco Frisbee

Mr Hodge took students cycling around Richmond Park; this included a

picnic and a Frisbee competition.

Extreme Adventure

This was a 3 day trip to Longridge. It was a beautiful setting on the Thames
near Marlow where students enjoyed high ropes, the leap of faith, kayaking,
sailing etc.
Do you know?

This was a local history walk highlighted by the observations of a local

historian.

London Dungeons

The day was full of scary stories and gruesome tales of London‟s prisons from
histories past.

Music Museum at the O2

Mr Wilson took students to the Music Museum where they had the opportunity
to play guitars, synthesisers and drums interactively. The group was able to
view the many displays of our modern popular music culture. The trip was
very successful and included a boat trip along the Thames from Greenwich
to Westminster.

I’m an Artist, get me to London

Mr McPaul took staff and students to the National Art Gallery to see and draw
from our famous art masterpieces. Students had the opportunity to study
draw from classic renaissance portraits to impressionist paintings. It was a very
calm, cultural day. Many visitors to the gallery stopped to look at the artwork
the students were producing and were very impressed.

Sand and the City

This was a two day trip; one day was spent on the beach at Bournemouth
where the students enjoyed a game of rounders and took in the sea air! The
second day was spent in London where they visited the London Eye and St
James‟ Park.
Trip to Normandy

Mr Pollard‟s GCSE History group travelled to France for a week and visited the
World War 1 Battlefields and the Normandy Beaches.

“We visited the Somme for 2 days and then travelled to look at sites of the D-
Day landings; this included Pegasus Bridge and Merville Battery and the
beaches including Omaha.”

Other activities in Humanities Week included Maritime Fun in Greenwich,

Movie in a Day, a trip to the Science Museum, Madame Tussauds, Hampton
Court and to see Wicked at the Apollo Theatre in Victoria.
Celebration of Achievement

Katie Nicholson and Kunal Patel (pictured) were invited to the Richmond
Celebration of Achievement Awards at Twickenham Stadium on Tuesday,
14th July. Katie, who was also Head Girl this year, received an award for
'academic and sporting excellence and services to the school' whilst Kunal
has achieved 100% attendance for the past four academic years!

Well done to both students...

PTA Summer Picnic - Friday, 16th July

The Summer Picnic was again a great success. The PTA was delighted with
the support from our families and staff. All who came enjoyed a relaxed
evening with fantastic live music from our 'ex' pupil band, Treasure and the
Pirates, followed by a band of Dads, SuperSeen. Huge thanks to all who
performed for us. The evening raised £800 for PTA funds but more importantly
we all had a good time!

Thank you to those who supported us by donating

prizes for the raffle; Hair associates, Sheen Sports,
Oliver Bonas, Robert Neil hairdressing, Alley Cat,
One Small Step...Children's shoes, Headmasters, The
Naked Turtle restaurant and Kenwood for
promenade tickets.
Christ’s School Citizenship Day – Monday, 12th July 2010

Pupils at Christ's School served as role models when they showed younger
pupils about how to take action on local and national issues affecting them.

All pupils in year 10 took part in a display day where they showcased the
work they had completed on a variety of issues. Topics included protesting
about the proposed Heathrow third runway, the use of battery farmed
chicken by fast food outlets, and the failure to build a pedestrian bridge at
North Sheen station.

Head of Humanities James Butler said: "By enquiring in to an issue

and communicating with people in positions of power, our pupils are
developing a much greater understanding of what it means to be a
responsible and active citizen. It is especially important they develop
key critical thinking and communication skills in relation to local issues, as
these are already beginning to affect them."

Pupils were thrilled to speak to newly elected MP for Richmond Park, Zac
Goldsmith, who spent over an hour discussing the issues raised by the pupils.
He said,”The pupils have initiated a wide range of very exciting campaigns,
and it was a pleasure discussing it all with them. Citizenship can mean a lot of
things, but getting involved in improving the world around us has to be a key
part. I wish them luck.”

Oliver Production – 8th, 9th and 10th July 2010

Directors Cut - Kelly Philpott, Sarah Brown and Philip Wilson

We would like to congratulate the cast and crew of Oliver for a fantastic
show. We all enjoyed the rehearsal process and have been overwhelmed by
the talent shown on stage. We couldn't have wished for a better cast and we
were all bursting with pride during the three performances. Well done and we
hope you enjoy your stardom.

"I enjoyed doing Oliver it is fun and had a great production at the end.
Everyone loved watching the show and gave wonderful comments."

Michael Wright (Oliver twist)

"I loved it. It was a laugh during rehearsals! It was fun and energetic and I
think everyone loved it. I can‟t wait till the next production! "

Ryan Nelhams (Dodger)

"I was really excited when I got picked for Oliver and it got better and better.
I got to work with people I never have worked with before and got to get to
know people better! I loved it!

Charlotte Smith (Mrs Sowerberry)

“It was really fun and I made some new friends”

Sporting Achievements

Borough Athletics Championships roundup

Although we had limited success at this years championships, there were

many performances of merit. In Year 10, Chae French was 3rd in the 100m.
Kieran Morgan came third in the shot, with James Ojomoh unable to retain
his title and finishing second in the Javelin. In Year 9, Deryn Esterhuyse was
third in the shot and Freya Holmes-Moorhouse was third in the High Jump. Will
Bloomfield came a creditable second in the 1500m, with Harley Sobraj runner
up in the Shot. Jack James and Daniel Zautashvilli were third in the long jump
and javelin respectively.

In Year 8, Sukyella Randle Caprez was third in the long jump, with Cassie
French third in the 100m. For the boys; Sam Alemayehu was second in the
long jump with Henry Brennan and Ben Harrison coming third in the 200m and
400m respectively. Year 7 has success with Hicham Hadj-Lakehal racing to
finish third in the 200m, whilst Terence Vancooten and Oliver Tugman both
narrowly missed out, finishing second in the 1500m and shot respectively.
Congratulations to our winners on the day who were Connor Patterson in the
Year 8, 1500m and James Adegbindin-Alawiye in the Year 8 shot.

Our most notable performances of the competition definitely go to Matthew

Bryan (Y10) and Tyler Murphy (Y7). Tyler won the Y7 100m, showing great
power to outsprint the field after a poor start. Matthew retained his 1500m
title, something he has won now for the past four years, after out-sprinting the
second placed competitor, who has now also finished second for the past
four years! Well done Matthew!

Well done to all students who took part in the championships this year. You
are a credit to your school.
Nick Elliott

Harlequins Rugby League

Whilst Mr. Elliott has been making his name as a scholarship coach; Emeka
Cole (U16s) and Kieran Morgan (U15s) have both represented Harlequins RL
this Spring. Both players have done extremely well, with Emeka being invited
to join the U18s until the end of the season. We wish the boys the best of luck!

blinds, some bright static chairs and designer chairs
for the computers. We have also purchased a
number of new books both fiction and non-fiction
with more orders being processed. We also have
received a number of free books from various
sources.

Students can fill out a form to request books that they would like to see in the
LRC.

During the year we collected the Nestle „Box tops for book‟ tokens which
enabled us to receive a number of books for free. We will continue to collect
the tokens so if you have any please send them in.

There has been an increase in the use of the LRC and

more students are borrowing books. Can I please ask
for all students who have overdue books to return
them now?

Cycling to School Strategy Survey

Emma Sheridan, who is a School Travel Consultant working to assist the

Smarter Travel Team at Richmond Council to develop a "Cycling to school
strategy”, has requested that parents and students complete a survey.

Pupil Survey - please ask pupils in Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 to complete
the pupil survey either online at www.surveymonkey.com/s/pupilsurvey or by
printing a survey and posting the completed ones to the address below

Parent Survey - please ask parents of pupils at your school to complete the
parent survey either online as part of
www.surveymonkey.com/s/parentcyclesurvey or by printing the survey and
posting the completed ones to the address below

Prize Draw - All STP Co-ordinator, staff and parent surveys will be entered into
a prize draw with £50 in Marks and Spencer's vouchers to be won by each
group
The school who returns or completes online the most surveys as a
percentage of their pupil numbers will win £250 in cash so please take a few
moments to complete the survey. We really want to include the thoughts and
needs of as many people as possible when developing our strategy. In
addition, each participating school will receive a summary of their own
results for inclusion in any future reviews of School Travel Plans (It could also
provide excellent evidence as part of a STP Accreditation Application for the
school). Each survey should only take a few minutes to complete.

Please post any completed paper copies of the survey to:

PTA Meetings – All welcome

Please do come along to the next PTA meeting which will be on Monday
13th September at 7pm in the music centre at school. Wine and nibbles will
be served as usual. We really do need more people to come along and
would very much like you to be there (as a one-off type taster or as a
regular!) Ideas do need to be bounced around.

Happy summer holidays!

British Transport Police message – don’t mess around on the railway!

British Transport Police (BTP) officers are preparing for a summer holiday
crackdown on those who think that it‟s fun to mess around on the railway line
or throw stones at trains.
Sergeant Chris Millard from BTP‟s Neighbourhood Policing Team for your area
said: “The summer holidays are a well deserved break for kids who have
been working hard at school and we don‟t want them to end on a sad note.

“The Tube tracks are live with 630 volts of electricity and anyone who goes
onto the tracks or messes around near them is not only trespassing and risking
a court appearance, they are putting their lives at risk.

“Unfortunately during the school holidays we often see an increase in kids

trespassing on the tracks and throwing stones at trains.

“It may seem like harmless fun but the consequences can be severe for both
the people on the train who may be injured and the person who commits the
offence who can end up being injured themselves and face being dealt with
by police.

“During the summer holidays BTP will have officers out on patrol at stations, on
trains and on mountain bikes in parkland areas to ensure safety on the Tube
and railway to deal with anyone who commits trespass or stone throwing
offences.”

“We want everyone to enjoy their summer holidays but remember that the
railway tracks are no place to hang out.”

Anyone with information about crime on the railway should contact BTP on
0800 405040 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Re: New School Uniform – online ordering

Christ‟s School uniform has been updated following requests from the student
council and parents.

The changes to the uniform include: a new blazer which is slightly darker blue
with the school badge embroidered onto the breast pocket. There is a new
navy V neck sweater with a gold line detail in the neck ribbing. The P.E. kit
now has sky blue shorts instead of white, and there is an additional navy blue
polo shirt. The new track suit top and jogging bottoms feature an
embroidered school logo on both, and on the reverse of the sweat shirt
„Christ‟s‟ is written across the back.

Len Smiths in Twickenham are no longer our uniform supplier and at present
any new uniform can be ordered online from Price and Buckland our new
supplier, which you can access via our website www.christs.richmond.sch.uk .
If you are unable to order online the school will hold a small stock of uniform
for new students and for those just wishing to replace items. Order forms are
available from the student office in school.

Please be aware that the uniform that your child currently wears does not
need to be replaced and the new track suit is optional for those students in
year 8 upwards.
