First grade
1.9 The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety
of fictional texts. a) Preview the selection. b) Set a purpose for
reading. c) Relate previous experiences to what is read. d) Make and
confirm predictions. e) Ask and answer who, what, when, where, why,
and how questions about what is read. f) Identify characters, setting,
and important events. g) Retell stories and events, using beginning,
middle, and end. h) Identify the main idea or theme. i) Read and
reread familiar stories, poems, and passages with fluency, accuracy,
and meaningful expression.
The class will start with the teacher reading a random chosen book.
Next the teacher will read aloud to the students. After the book is
over the teacher will ask the students to pick a book of their
choosing out of their correct learning profile section. After each
student has their own book, they will read it to themselves for about
10 to 15 minutes. After the time is up everyone will sit in their seats
and log in to their chrome book. After that they will go to google and
click the pre-placed link in the tool bar for
http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/comic/.
This allows them to create their own perception of how the story
went. It allows them to create a picture of the beginning middle and
end of the story as well as write a sentence describing what is
happening in their picture and the book itself.
During the process of creating a picture and a sentence the students
will have to include
- Which characters are in the scene (picture or sentence)
- What they are doing (picture and sentence)
- Make sure it their comic is in order from beginning middle
and end. (pictures)
- Have at least 4 items in each picture
- Sentences must have a capital letter and a period
During this time the teacher will be at the front navigating through
the steps with the class and creating his or her own from the book
they read earlier. Each student will have 5 to 10 minutes to complete
each slide, so that everyone will be moving along together to ensure
they are watching the teacher’s steps and instructions.

Directions for Use

for your students to use the tool to
complete their assignment. Depending
on the age of your student, this might
begin with 1. Click on Earth to open the
Internet. Etc..
1. Open the internet
2. Click on the pre-entered link in the tool bar
3. Click the screen until the questions with the blanks appear.
4. Fill out the name of your book you read in the first blank
5. Put the authors name in the second blank (it says “subtitle below”)
6. Next put your name in the authors blank
7. Click the play button in the bottom right corner and this will
move you to the next stage. It looks something like this..
8. Next you will choose your template. For this project you will need
to click on the one that only has 3 slides (it says three panels next to
it)
9. It will then start your comic, you are now choosing your
background for your beginning portion of your book. To
navigate this you will click the up and down arrows on the
right side of the page until you find one that matches the
scene in your book.
10. Next you will need to add your characters. To do so cick the
little person in the bottom left corner. Click the arrows until
you find one that most fits for you. To put them on your page
just click on the picture and drag it where you want it to go.

11. Next you need to fill out what else you think or is in this
scene. For example if you would like a chair or a book in your
picture click on the button that looks like a tv in the bottom
right corner. (it looks something like this)
12. Next if you want your characters to speak to each other, you
need to click on the button that looks like a speech bubble.
(it looks something like this) (this is optional)
13. After you create this first picture move down to the rectangle
that says caption and next to it is a space to type. In this you
are going to state what is happening in this picture. You have
around 70 letters of space to write your sentence.
14. When finished with this first slide on the top of the page it
will say one and have arrows around it, you are going to click
the one pointing to the right. This will take you to slide
1

15. Complete steps 9-13 for this side, although this slide is going
to be about the middle of your book.
16. Complete step 14
17. Then for your final slide about the end of your book complete
steps 9-13 again.
18. After you finish slides 1-3 look it over and then click finish in the top
right corner and click print and place your comic on the desk.
