ICDL for Educators Courseware - Concepts of IT Module 1 Part 2

Exercise 1 A lot to understand!

There is a lot of terminology and many abbreviations to understand when

using computers. The following should help you understand these terms.
Read the explanations and then refer to them as required.

ADSL An Asymetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) uses

the existing telephone wiring found in almost every
home and office to provide a faster connection to the
Internet. It allows you to download (receive)
information faster than you upload (send)
information.

Application Software Once the computer system is up and running,

application software is used to accomplish specific
tasks on the computer. This software can be split into
categories depending on the different tasks to be
undertaken.
Examples of these categories are:-
Word processor for letters and text documents.
Spreadsheet for handling figures and formulae.
Presentation for presenting pictures and
information.
It is important to pick the right application software to
handle the job in hand.

Bits Per Second Known as “BPS”.

This is a unit of measurement of the speed with
which data is sent and received by your computer
via a modem.
The higher the “BPS”, the faster the modem. Faster
modems may cost more, but they can save you
phone charges by transmitting your files faster.

Broadband A type of high speed internet connection capable of

speeds up to 40 times faster than conventional
modems.

CD ROM (Compact Disc - Read Only Memory.)

A removable storage device.
A single CD-ROM has a large storage capacity of up to
650 or 700 Megabytes. CD-ROMs are cheap to
produce and are often used to distribute software and
multimedia.

Central Processing Often referred to as the “CPU” or “processor”.

Unit
The powerful microprocessor chip in your computer
that handles the central management functions of the
computer.
It is able do to millions of calculations per second.
The CPU is measured in megahertz (MHz) or
gigahertz (GHz) and controls the memory access,
logic control and central processing of data in
personal computers.

Client/server A client/server network is the most efficient way to

connect multiple computers to share information. The
server is the central computer that stores
everyone’s files.
A client is any computer that can access the
information stored on the server.
