EE-214 Hall Ticket Number: IV/IV B.Tech (Supply) DEGREE EXAMINATION JULY, 2015 First Semester PRIME MOVERS & PUMPS (ELECTRICAL & ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING) Time: Three Hours Maximum : 60 Marks Answer Question No.1 compulsorily. (1X12 =12 Marks) Answer ONE question from each unit. (4X12=48 Marks) 1 Answer all questions. (6x2=12M) a) Define the terms Mass Density and specific weight. b) Name different types casings used in centrifugal pumps. ©) Define the terms cavitation and specific speed. hh) What is the difference between open system and closed system? Give one example to each. i) Name the thermodynamic processes involved in Otto cycle? h) How do you classify the IC engines and steam turbines? UNIT-T 2. a) Obtain an expression for the force exerted by a jet of water on a vertical plate, when it is Stationary. b) A Jet of water 45 mm diameter strikes a flat plate normally at 60 m/s at a point 200 mm below the top of the plate. What force should be applied at SO mm below the axis of the jet, in order to keep the plate vertical. Assume the plate to be hinged at its top. (6+6=12M) (OR) 3. a) List down some advantages of centrifugal pump over displacement pump. What do you understand by ‘Specific speed’ of a centrifugal pump? ) A centrifugal pump impellor has diameters at inlet and outlet as 350mm and 700mm. respectively. The flow velocity at outlet is 2.3 m/s and vanes are set back at an angle of 45° at the outlet, If the manometric efficiency is 75%, calculate the minimum starting speed of the pump. (6+6=12M) UNIT-IL 4, a) What are the differences between impulse and reaction turbi b) A Kaplan turbine develops 20 MW at average head of 32m. Assuming a speed ratio of 2, flow ratio of 0.58, diameter of the boss equal to 0.34 times the diameter of the runner and an overall efficiency of 85 percent, determine the diameter, speed and specific speed of the turbine. (6+6=12M) (oR) 5. Explain the working of a Kaplan turbine with a neat sketch. (22M) UNIT-IIL 6. a) Explain clearly “Zeroth law of thermodynamics’ and Steady flow energy equation. b) What are reversible and irreversible processes? (8+4=12M) (OR) 7. Draw and Explain the P-V and T-S diagrams for Otto cycle and diesel cycles. (12M) UNIT-IV 8. a) Explain the working of a four stroke Diesel engine with a neat sketch. b) List out the differences between 2 stroke engine and 4 stroke engine. (6+6=12M) (OR) 9. a) Explain the working of an open cycle gas turbine with a neat sketch. ) Explain the following terms: i) blade efficiency ii) Stage efficiency iii) Reheat and Regeneration, (6+6=12M)
