Learning Targets/Objectives:
Students will:
- identify the skeletal system by making a diagram of muscles in the arm
- identify how the muscles contract and and extend by making the muscle
- create a muscle by using their knowledge gained from the instruction
Assessment Scale:
3. Likert Scale: 1= filled in one blank correctly 2= filled in two blanks correctly 3= filled in 3
blanks correctly 4= filled in all the blanks correctly
Subject Matter/Content:
Prerequisites:
- Basic understanding of how the arm bends
- Basic understanding of where the muscles are
- Basic understanding of how the the muscle flexes and and extends
- Knowledge from lesson 1
Key Vocabulary:
- Muscle: a body tissue consisting of long cells that contract when stimulated and
produce motion
- Joints: are the places in your body where bones meet.
- Extensor: a muscle whose contraction extends or straightens a limb or other part of the
body.
- Flexor: a muscle that serves to flex or bend a part of the body.
- Humerus Bone: The humerus is the long bone in the upper arm. It is located between
the elbow joint and the shoulder.
- Radius Bone: is a bone in the forearm that runs next to the ulna.
- Ulna Bone: The ulna is located on the opposite side of the forearm from the thumb
Content/Facts:
What is a muscle?
- The muscles move the external parts of the body and the limbs
- Muscles cover the bones and give our bodies their shape
- You can see and feel them
What do the muscles do?
- They are voluntary muscles which means you have full control over them
- Main function is movement
- They make you stronger
What kind of bones make up your arm that hold the muscle?
- There are 3 bones starting from the shoulder to wrist: humerus, radius, and ulna.
- The muscles that are attacked to the bones are the bicep and the tricep.
What is a skeletal muscle?
- These muscles give you power and strength.
- They are attached at one end of the bone.
Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
- To get students attention the teacher will start off the lesson by asking the students if
they know what a muscle is and also where muscles are in their body.
- The teacher will instruct the students to flex and extend their arm.
- Talk about how your muscles can get injured; why they might hurt after certain
activities.
Development/Teaching Approaches:
- Start the lesson by going over the Prezi
(https://prezi.com/view/kCbPaRxkFxRkp67oc3E2/)
- Before going through the Prezi the teacher will pass out guided notes that the students
will follow along with.
- Prezi:
Students will follow along- first topic is a video; play from 2:45 minute to 3:26.
Have the students fill out the guided notes for each section. (see attached)
Second topic: the students will go over the 3 bones in their arm as well as fill
out the guided notes sheet for this section.
Third topic: Teacher will pass out measuring tape so that the students can
measure their arms. The students will then write down their measurements on
the guided note sheet attached.
- At the end of the Prezi the teacher will talk about how the arm is apart of skeletal
system as well as the muscles that are attached to the arm.
- Before starting the inquiry part ask the students “thumbs up thumbs down” if they
understand everything that is going on so far and if they have any questions.
- The inquiry lesson:
The teacher will hand out the inquiry sheet so the students can follow along as
the create.
The teacher will instruct the students that the measurements that they made
during the Prezi will now be used.
The teacher will then allow the students to explore the materials and also to see
how they will create their project.
- After the students are done exploring and creating, the teacher will ask the students if
they feel like they have created an arm muscle with using the materials given to them.
- The teacher will then allow students to come up and show the class what they made and
explain the parts of the arm.
- After all the students show their creating the teacher will show what theirs look like and
compare them.
- The teacher will then hand out the exit slip and tell the students to fill it out and then
hand it in before they leave. This will give the teacher evidence that the students were
able to finish the inquiry and understand it.
Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
- The teacher will review the guided note sheet that was done in the beginning of the
class as well as going over the Prezi guided notes and talk about the flexor and
extensor.
- Students will participate in the review about talking about their arm model and what
they found difficult in the process of creating them.
- Students will also hand in an exit slip to show they have mastered the inquiry.
Accommodations/Differentiation:
J.R. has ADHD which means he has trouble staying on task so his participation in the
activities will help allow him to use his energy in a functional way.
Materials/Resources:
- Measuring tape for each table
- Paper towel rolls (3 for each table); one big one for the Humerus and two smaller ones
for the bones
- Tape for each table
- 2 skinny balloons for each table
- string for each table
- 2 paper clip for each table

Additional reflection/thoughts
Hypothesis:
What do you think your muscle will look like using these materials?
Draw your idea below:
Procedure:
1. Draw out what you think the paper towel rolls will look like- think
about where the bones are in the video.
2. What do the paper towel rolls each represent:

_____________________________________________________?
4. Start to create the base of the arm: using the 3 paper towel rolls;
one long one and two small ones.
5. Go onto using the balloons and create what you think the muscle
looks like. Draw this below
6. What do you think the paper clip and string are used for? Think
about how the bones are connected.

7. After you are finished with the model, what do you think you
could have changed differently about it?
