Homestay Guide for Students

• You should not bring strangers to the house without permission from the Homestay
family.

• If you want to bring a friend home, please ask your Homestay family in advance if it is all
right to do so. Do not forget to confirm the visiting hours with your Homestay family.

• Out of respect and to avoid getting your Homestay family worried, always let your
Homestay family know what time you will be home.

• Since most homestay host needs to go to work early in the morning, please do not make
loud noises or use the kitchen after 10 pm.

• If you plan to eat out, please call your Homestay family in advance and let them know
that you will not be home to eat with them. This will avoid them making extra food for you.

• Find out when can you receive calls and duration you can keep the phone busy. If you
make long distance calls from the Homestay family’s home, you must use a calling card
or make collect calls.

• Laundry - consult with your Homestay family upon arrival about how and when you can
do your laundry. Some Homestay family will have a schedule for you or they will do the
laundry for you.

• Bathroom – If you are sharing a bathroom with other members of the family, please find
out when is the best time to have a shower and for how long. You are responsible for
your bathroom supplies such as towels, shampoo, body wash, toothpaste etc. Please be
considerate about the length of time of your shower.

• Cleanliness – It is not common for families to have maids to clean the house. You are
responsible for keeping your room clean and tidy. You are expected to clean up after
yourself after meals and shower. You are NOT required to do other house chores such
as baby sitting, gardening, house cleaning, etc..

• Please take care not to cause any damage to the homestay’s property. You will be
responsible for any property damaged caused and you will have to pay any expenses
incurred for the repairs of the damage.

• Your Homestay family should talk to you and not ignore you. The family must
communicate with you and make you feel like part of the family. Don’t be shy when you
are not sure about something. Always ask questions. Our Homestay families are friendly
and helpful. The more interaction you have with the family the faster you will get to know
them.

• Be considerate and don’t forget to turn off the lights when you are going to leave the
room for an extended period of time. TV, radio and other electrical appliance must be
turned off when you are not using them.

• In emergency situations, dial 911 to reach an ambulance or the police.
